CHARLESTON, SC—Reddit user dawkins_disciple_666 posted a long, meandering rant online Thursday wherein he argued that atheism is the only mature, rational position one can hold regarding the existence of God.

The 34-year-old Redditor was converted to atheism by a series of memes on the internet, sources discovered Thursday.

“Unlike those brainwashed fundies, we atheists rely solely on logic, reason, and interspection [sic],” the man posted in Reddit’s r/atheism subreddit—the same place where, several months prior, he had come to accept the atheistic worldview after viewing a disparaging ‘philosoraptor’ meme along with an anti-religion “condescending Wonka” image. “I don’t get how anyone can commit intelectual [sic] suicide by saying they belief [sic] in some all-powerful magic fairy god out there up in the sky somewhere. Grow up!”

“Atheism truly is the only logical position,” the post concluded.

At publishing time, the post had garnered over 35,000 upvotes on the popular website.

I fucking hate it when people talk about Galileo. GALILEO WAS NOT SCIENTIFIC. He did not mathematically prove that the earth orbited the sun, he tried to use scripture and 'things he noticed' to prove his point and made fun of anyone that debated him. He was a stupid arrogant rich italian man and he got a slap on the wrist by the pope for being an insolent prick. There was plenty of mathematicians and astronomers that DID have mathematical proofs and once those were developed it was accepted without a problem by the church. The church was enforcing scientific method, FUCK.

>the earth orbits the sun, you interpreted these verses wrong

>here's some tidbits that support this

>stay behind a flawed (the universe does not orbit the sun) but still more correct standpoint to his detriment

>the church was enforcing scientific method

You do know that this just makes the church sound more and more like dunces who suffer of error? Ironic, considering the "Church is always right". Strikes to me as of an overgrown cult.

There is no way to "prove" that earth orbits around the sun. If you define one of them as a fixed point, the other one will be its natural satellite. Since we live on earth, it made sense to think of it as the sun orbiting around earth.

However in the context of all the other planets in our solar system it is more reasonable to have the sun as the fixed point with everything else orbiting around it.

In reality, why do we care if we're not going into space?

I'm not saying I don't think it's the case that the earth is the suns satellite, but I've yet to have anybody tell me the reason I NEED to believe the earth revolves around the sun other than "scientific accuracy", which is circular reasoning anyway…

Galileo's proof is literally wrong on every level. He proved nothing. By chance the system he though was right was - except it wasn't his system was not the heliocentric model we use today, but a completely unrelated fantasy save for the sun in the middle.

As if there were no scientists/astronomers at the time who were trying to prove that the sun was orbiting the earth… what are you dense?

Its not like the church is stood by what they believed last year for the sake of tradition. There was a scientific discussion with "tidbits"

and "verses" on both sides.

They stood by what had more proof AT THE TIME and that is the correct thing to do.

Suffer of error my ass, turns out galileo was wrong too! Guess what?! Both the sun and the earth orbit each other, they both have a gravitational influence! Woah stupid church how did they not know that back in the medieval ages!
