The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? the Lord is the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?

I was reading about the prophecy of Jesus about the temple..He said that the temple and the city would be destroyed and that the jews would be scattered among the nations. There is also a prophetic paralel with Jonah. Jonah preached to nineveh that if they didn't repent, the city would be destroyed in 40 days. Jonah also spent 3 days and 3 nights in a fish's belly. Jesus said that if they didn't repent, the city would be destroyed and they would be punished. Jesus spent 3 days and 3 nights in the heart of the earth. But the jews didn't repent, they killed Jesus and their city was destroyed…in exactly 40 years.Even emperor titus (the emperor at the time ) refused to receive honors as he was merely following the commands of a deity, as a vessel for divine wrath. How can atheists and non-believers still refuse to convert after this? What are their mental gymnastics? Do these people hate God or something? because this is too obvious and only a fool would reject Christ.

There's a pretty easy counter-argumet: the gospel was written after the fall of the temple.

But is there any evidence for this

f03183  No.775935

Correctly predicting the fall of a nation doesn't entail the rest of the supernatural affirmations of the source text. You're right that unbelief makes you a fool, but the historical narrative about the diaspora of hebrews isn't a defeater argument.

Yes but..it seems like too much of a coincidence, exactly 40 years later? Most historians agree that Jesus was crucified in 30 AD.

Is there any evidence the gospel was not written before the fall of the temple? Holy tradition is hardly taken as a serious argument by scholars. On the contrary, they would point to the prophecies about the fall of the temple as proof that it was written after the fall of the temple.

That's their mental gymnastics. The gospels were written after the temple because the gospels can't possibly correct and all the gospel writers all lied and put words in Jesus's mouth. Great logic

Your own mental gymnastics are pretty good too

There is reason to believe the gospels were written before the temple's fall. http://christianthinktank.com/litdep3.html

Only the classical there's no God so prophecy ain't real.

Either way even if true it would mean nothing at all for Christians.

Even if it were true, it would still be weird that the jerusalem and the temple fell 40 years ( along with connections to Jonah ) after Jesus died. Not that it would be proof, but it would still really makes one think.

Well, the number 40 does pop up alot in the Bible (Noah waited 40 days for the flood to subside, Israel wandered 40 years in the wilderness, Jesus spent 40 days out in the desert). So you aren't crazy for noticing 40 years after Jesus the 2nd Temple was shoah'd. Maybe it was divine Providence after all. I doubt a fedora would be convinced by this but us faithful definitely see it.

>There's a pretty easy counter-argumet: the gospel was written after the fall of the temple.

This is implicitly faulty though. Luke writes of the temple's destruction, but he never finished Acts (his second following work), and it sort of ended on a "cliffhanger", with Paul still in missionary mode. It doesn't mention his death, Peter's death, or even James' death a bit before. This means Acts was written before AD 70.. and Luke even moreso.

The only excuse skeptics have is that Luke wrote it all post 70, but deliberately is screwing with our heads, only making it look like he wrote it earlier.

Details.

Yep that's their logic. First you presuppose that no prophecy can be true, then you find any prophecy that was true and take that very fact as proof that it must be written after.

This is how "scholarship" currently works.
