I know homebrewing beer is the hip new thing all the kids are into these days but do any y'all moonshine?

 No.8429

I'm looking into homebrewing in the future, but I don't really drink other alchohol. I'll have wine sometimes, scotch occasionally, and other hard liquor and cocktails very rarely.

 No.8447

I've helped make it before. its not terribly difficult, but to get any real quantities made the setup can get rather big.

Ive always wanted to make some mash and distill it, it would be good fun, but there are tow problems, I dont want to accidently drink the wrong kind of alcohol and go blind, and I dont want it to taste like shit.

I had a friend make some moonshine one time, there was copper piping involved and I guess it had corrosion inside and it turned the booze green.

>i still had a little taste, it was horrible

>i-it's just like Midori, bro, give it a try

Please tell me your buddy didn't have some sort of misplaced maker's pride and down any of it himself.

No we just mostly showed it around and everyone had a laugh. I wonder if that would kill you though if you actually drank it. Probably, but I dont know…

you would have gotten heavy metal poisoning.

Whisky gets its flavor from the aging. Those charred barrels they set it in for a decade to mellow it out and give it a golden color….

Yeah, the raw liquor is going to be a touch harsh.

>Drink the wrong kind of alcohol

Even if you left in the methanol you wouldn't suffer any side effects. Most spirits have a low percentage of methanol in them anyways.

Also forgot to add that most of the stuff about the methanol you make while brewing alcohol causing you to go blind comes from the prohibition era. Cause the unscrupulous bastards would sell people industrial alcohol which the government mandated have large quantities of methanol put in the mix.

Methanol Poisoning is still a thing– bogan Aussie tourists get fucked on metho-spiked spirits in Bali these days.

100% they cut it with cheap industrial alcohol.

 No.8926

I've been looking out at yard sales and the like for an old 3gal stainless pressure cooker to turn into a reflux still. Already have all the homebrewing equipment from years of making beer.

Not much to worry about as far as going blind either. Most of that shit was from booze getting cut with industrial alcohol or chucklefucks making stills out of lead soldered radiators.

Actually alcohol gets its flavor from what it's made from. Oak aging adds mild additional flavors and does mellow the final product, but if you do your cuts right and blend it correctly it's not that harsh to begin with.
