On this day, Steamboat Willie was created, and Mickey Mouse made his official debut Despite him technically appearing in Plane Crazy a few months earlier, but that was a test screening so I guess that doesn't count.

In any case, he's turning 90 today. Say something nice to him and his cartoons.

>Dan O'Neil charged with contempt of court

See, Dan O'Neill was so eager for a lawsuit against Disney that he supposedly managed to have issues of Air Pirate Funnies smuggled into Disney board meetings. In 1971, Disney took the bait and sued O'Neill for copyright infringement. O'Neill lost that suit, but kept appealing and drawing Disney parodies until finally the Ninth Circuit ruled 3-0 against O'Neil in 1978.

In 1979, O'Neill drew Communiqué #1 from the M.L.F. (posted here >>1036476) for CoEvolution Quarterly #21. Disney subsequently demanded that O'Neill be held in Contempt of Court and be criminally prosecuted. However, 1980, Disney finally cut their losses by settling out of court, the dropping the contempt charges and promising not to enforce the judgment O'Neill was on the hook for $2,190,000 as long as the Pirates no longer infringed Disney's copyrights.

O'Neill continues to proudly proclaim that it's a federal crime for him to draw Mickey Mouse. However, opinions on the incident are mixed, with O'Neill thinking he re-established the first amendment and knocked Disney down a peg, with others belief that O'Neill's antics set parody back twenty years.

>What? For trying to do something about it? I hate it when someone talks like that. Lazy cowards.

It was specifically New York Law School professor Edward Samuels who said that. I think it has to do with the legal standard it set. O'Neill's insistence that he was drawing Mickey Mouse, as opposed to a parody of Mickey Mouse, greatly expanded what's protected by copy-right and eroding Fair Use.

 No.1036613

I have that amazing Mickey collection from the 70s, when Mickey wasn't spelled Micky in Germany (those where the fucking days), with all kinds of amazing stories which were actually interesting to read and way too edgy for Disney these days.

Like, a story about that communist supervillain ape who sinks and steals submarines with a giant magnetic claw. And there's that moment where Mickey is all cocky and doesn't believe it, until they sink the ship he's on and turn of all navigation systems while he hides in a vent with a machine gun. In the end he destroys the villain's lair with a flak.

Or a story about Mickey, Goofy and Donald trying to stop some spoopy ghosts who turn out to be smugglers, trying to scare the house owner away. At one point Mickey wants to prove if the ghosts are real, pulls a gun and shoots at them, only barely missing, otherwise he'd have straight up murdered one of the guys.

And finally, that comic where Mickey is a secret agent entering the foreign legion which scares Minnie half to death (who actually behaved like they were married in all the comics). Turns out Pete is his drill instructor and starts to abuse him and lets Mickey die in the desert at one point, but only saves him last second because if his boss finds out, he'd get executed.

No because mickey mouse is heavily associated with disney as a whole and due to earlier legal fuckery relating to Tarzan he's arguably copyrighted forever. (Although this will be an interesting case if it ever goes to court)

This also presumably means that steamboat willie will not become copyright free in it's entirety and mickey will have to be edited out of any reproductions.

Let that sink in. Disney are shitting all over the legal system just to stop people from using obscure parts of a nearly century old cartoon.

All the stories he mentioned, ironically, aren't European. They're serials from Floyd Gottfredson's newspaper strips. Don't remember the name of the first two, but pretty sure the third is "Mickey Mouse joins the Foreign Legion" or something like that.

There an amazing Mickey Mouse comic named "Die Frau in Zartrosa" by a guy named Bob Langhans, but it seems it has never been translated.

Mickey is a detective in that comic and tries to find some clues against some criminal in a shady pub. There he meets a woman who poisons him. From there on, he tries to find her and the antidote before dying. And it's friggin intense. The criminals make fun of him, the cops can't help him, the woman actually fakes his funeral with a wax figure to mock him even more. He gets really desperate over time.

Only guy who helps him is some other criminal who punches the information out of people. Both get utterly rekt during the comic.

That story is part of the "Mickey Mysterier" series from Denmark( "Ein Fall für Micky" in German).

There were 26 standalone magazines of it and after it got canceled they released a few additional stories in Onkel Joakim/Donald Duck and Jumbobog/Lustiges Taschenbuch.

They were aimed at an older audience than the normal Mickey Mouse crime stories, so they are a bit darker and better written.

Those were great. I read some of them when I was younger, they were pretty hardcore for Mickey Mouse. I remember one about an arsonist who escaped from jail and one where Mickey was poisoned by a literal serial killer and had to find an antidote before he died.

They didn't sugarcoat any of it and it's kinda amazing that Disney allowed this. If someone can track down any German scans I can translate them, assuming they're not available in English.

But Eega Beeva is and always was a mouse character. In the first story he appeared in he used to be a time traveler though, while the Italian comics he's an alien.

>There was always some sort of overarcing story to connect the individual stories

The story behind that is, that the LTBs started as a translation of the Italian "I Classici di Walt Disney" book series. In it they reprinted the old ongoing stories from the Topolino magazine.

When they were originally printed in the Topolino magazine the first row was always a text box with a summary of what happened last time and the last row was a text box with speculation about how the story could continue.

Since the text boxes were not needed anymore in the complete prints in the I Classici books they let their C list artist draw in some filler panels. The same artists would also add the frame story, that tries to somehow tie the stories in the book together.

The old Italian comics have terrible coloring.

They only had a limited set of colors, the ugly piss yellow is everywhere, stuff changes it's color and is in the wrong color all the time.

In the night, the sky is usually in the same bright blue it has at daytime. There even is a story with a brown polar bear.

Shame Walt passed away. Mickey wouldn't have become synonymous with greed if he were still around. Or was it just a matter of time?

You know what they say, better to die a hero than to live long enough to become the villain.

They also started in black and white, and then only coloring each second page, before finally coloring all pages, but poorly at the beginning.

Well, Sonic stands for a retarded fandom and shitty games, so I guess it's a matter of time.

>He's a bland, one-dimensional character

You could say that about a lot of old toon characters.

Just like Bugs Bunny, because bland is something anyone can like.

I'm about 70% sure that was because SEGA commit Seppuku by confusing customers and pissing off 3rd party companies and retailers. I wonder what would have happened to Sonic had SEGA been smarter with business decisions and better supported their consoles. At the very least the games wouldn't have been as underfunded and probably less shit.
