Holy shit, this thing looks like one of those Turkish telenovelas. Is there any hope for this movie, /co/?

I was actually feeling very excited for it… Until I saw King Arthur by Guy Ritchie and now I dread seeing the same kind of movie as Aladdin

>not posting the first trailer

This reminds me of those 2008 youtube parodies of popular games.

>they didnt even give Jafae or Aladin their respective hats

>Genie looks like a bad photoshop of will smith

Who the i the slag on the far right? I thought there was only one female character in Aladdin, and the first on the right had to be Jasmine.

Some OC handmaiden created for this movie.

That teaser was a nothing burger that showed practically nothing. What else is there to say about it.

I liked that king arthur movie.

>Will Smith as Genie

Holy shit, this is going to be a trash-fire. I am almost tempted to pirate it but I doubt I could sit through it sober.

I like how they chose the most light-skinned Arabs possible for the cast. Remember when people complained that the characters in the original looked "too white"? I can only imagine what they'll say about this.

>Will Smith as genie

Robin Williams carried the first Aladdin movie on his shoulders. I actually forgot Robin Williams' name. I do wish that he hadn't killed himself Will Smith is charismatic, but he's no Robin Williams when it comes to these kind of characters. Jafar needs to be able to impose himself over Aladdin. Keeping his hat on would help with this as it looks like Aladdin is bigger than he is from that promo. Aladdin looks ok. Jasmine looks cute. I'm assuming that's Apu or Iago in the back right as those are the only characters missing. Jafar is fucking Iago now? I really do think Genie should have been cgi or a literal cartoon with Will Smith as VA. A Who Framed Roger Rabbit sort of cartoon among a cast of normal people. He's a genie after all. He doesn't need to look realistic. It will be insanely hard to top the genie that Williams portrayed and I honestly don't Will Smith is going to be able to do it.

There was some minor controversy saying that extras were using brownface since they weren't hiring any real Arabs. Disney got into some flack you can google it if you feel any interest. What is funny is that Aladdin isn't even Arab, he is a Copt. Jasmine is half-British, half-Indian.

>that second pic

That chick went completely crazy

You can't just have brown Caucasians, you need the right kind of brown Caucasians, obviously. Imagine if Europeans threw this much of a shitfit every time a white character was played by someone from the wrong part of Europe (assuming they even make it that far). (Historically, I mean; nowadays you're lucky to even get a white European.)

Anyone remember Aladdin for the Sega Genesis? Nostalgia.

Is this a joke? I know Turkey has its hands in South America, but that's a bit of a stretch. Unless Turkey does it too.

I found this film while browsing /islam/ not a Muslim, just wanted to ask about why they're sensitive about showing the Quran. I'd have watched it even with the somewhat shoddy 3D animation if it weren't for the social justice overtones. "Muh equality", black slaves/"white" (Arabian/Iranian) overlords (even if Muhammad is portrayed with similar skin). I'm not sure how Muslims reacted to the film.

Islam is actually interesting if they weren't so batshit about it.

They changed it quite a lot, if you want to actually have the real world of Jesus you have to read the apocrifdont know if is spelled that way, I’m non-nativebasically not officially recongized by the church gospel of Matthew, is the one discover in 1970ish in a Syrian tomb, done the carbon test and is real but since contradicts 80% of all new dogmatic church is not recongized so It’s the closest one you can find, all the rest is addition on par to Shia which funnily enough, isn’t recognized by 25% of Islam that’s why there is the division between them and even more funnily the 25% thinks that the only thing worth to be followed apart of Mohammed word, was the word of his second wife since she kept doing his path while the other 75% think that the addition put from the sultans are the true path being them the overlord

>I know Turkey has its hands in South America

They only have their hands on Venezuela, though that might change soon. There is one Brazilian channel that licenses Turkish soap operas, but I can't imagine people tunning it to watch them since Mexican and the local series are still popular

In any case they have been making historical themed telenovelas set in the Ottoman Empire for quite some time now probably to romanticize the period where Turkey was still relevant.

I don't know why people like live-action movies, especially remakes of animated movies.

I literally always despised live action, the time where Cartoon Network was airing only live action trash made me sick.

Its obvious, at least to me, that animation is better. How can anyone even like live action movies?

>street rat

>so poor he doesn't even own a shirt in the original

>gets a pin-striped shirt in the remake

The design in general is eye-bleeding garbage with too much detail, but making Aladdin look like a mafia boss's son really stands out. It's like they're deliberately imitating Bollywood kitsch.

Muhammed doesn't appear in this movie tho. That is the difference from Islamic movies from typical Christian ones that tell the Nativity or the Passion is that there is only so much you can do, and you have to walk on eggshells. This movie takes place during pre-Islamic Arabia which is the closest acceptable thing you can do in Islamic media. Two examples come to mind:

- The Message made by Mustapha Akkad who tried to bridge the gap between the West and the Islamic world by telling the origin of Islam, but he could only feature Muhammad's uncle as the main protagonist.

- And the Messenger of God, which IIRC was entirely told from his point of view.

And you can only tell that. Try telling the first invasion of the Christian world like the conquest of Alexandria, Jerusalem and the Levant and that shit will get criticized in the West. You could try to tell the conquest of the Sassanian Empire, but I never heard of it. I do know of a Turkish movie where they tell the fall of Constantinople from the Ottoman's "heroic" point of view. But that shit is hardly "Biblical" or Quranic.

It's funny they always use the white slave decendants "turks" as actors

Isn't Aladdin supposed to be set in China?

Jesus Christ, why did they have to choose the plainest woman and guy to play Jasmine and Aladdin? They are supposed to be pretty.

I remember the first turkish soap opera (Binbir Gece) got a nice reception here in Brazil, it got kinda popular. But after that, the other soap operas the channel presented were not as viewed as this one.

Looks like the poster for an Aladdin pantomime. It's just missing the Krankies.

I hope the crowd at the cinema joins in and shouts "HE'S BEHIND YOU" and all the other pantomime stuff.

To be fair the female protagonist which the show is based on was Greek so of course she'd be white.

>why did they have to choose the plainest woman and guy to play Jasmine and Aladdin? They are supposed to be pretty.

Can't have the leads be too attractive or else the audience will feel too alienated (though I don't know, I personally know some really thirsty virgins that literally lust after Daisy Ridley so who knows). If you want a hot girl in a movie, you are only getting it into straight to blue-ray garbage like Scorpion King V.

>I remember the first turkish soap opera (Binbir Gece) got a nice reception here in Brazil, it got kinda popular. But after that, the other soap operas the channel presented were not as viewed as this one.

I have vague memories of people discussing that show back then too, but other than that yeah, those shows aren't as huge. I actually read in a recent article that they can barely keep up with our productions. Though I did hear they do very well in Chile and Argentina.

The original tale was, but this is an adaptation of the original animation which is Arabic instead. Besides if they were loyal to the source material, they'd have to set it in Xinjiang and have Aladdin being a fucking Uighur and we obviously can't have that with China openly and shameless ethnically cleansing Muslims over there. Which is a shame because I actually like a version of the 1001 Nights that features Aladdin played by some Chinese dude.

Yes, but characters have Arabic names, titles, and culture. According to some sources, China was synonymous with 'far away land.' Either way, it just goes to show how much different distant cultures and nations back in medieval era knew of one another.

Turkish dramas are really popular in much of Eastern Europe and the Balkans (the lattern was former Ottoman Turkish territory) and to some extent in the Muslim territories from Morocco to Pakistan.A major Arab broadcaster is butthurt that last year it banned all Turkish dramas from its channels. Also Turkish dramas are moderately popular in Indonesia, but in my country no one cares about them.

I always assumed that Turkish dramas are popular in Eastern Europe/Balkans and South America because they tend to have the same kind of over-the-top acting and extreme melodrama that shows from those countries do. Russian TV shows are also somewhat similar but they tend to tone down the melodrama in favor of extreme violence or satire. Or at least the old Soviet ones did.

Its because its fake.

Last I checked, the only Arab country that likes Turkey is Qatar. Egypt, Iran and Iraq really doesn't like them, and none of the Persial Gulf states do for that matter.

Its more like because they perceive these dramas as trying to instill a sense of nostalgia for the Ottoman Empire which undermines the Arab authority. They are correct to some extent since Turkey has been really investing into that pan-Islamist agenda, but they wanna place themselves on top just like the good old times, but ironically, its the Arab governments that take issue with this.

normalfags will eat it up and make sure it earns back its budget.

It's such a bizarre choice not to animate the cave of wonders considering in the original it was one of the first uses of complex CGI animation and it would be like coming full circle now that CGI is ubiquitous in movies now.

What I expected out of modern Disney. You can just tell they never grew up with the original animated film with how they are describing it. I guess it'll be common business practice to hire and employee people who don't know the source material and/or can berate their fans after the backlash.

Still waiting for them to learn their lesson from Star Wars.

They did, The Last Jedi is the best Star Wars.

>"In the first movie we felt like she didn't have enough of a goal, it was really just to meet a guy"

What the fuck.

She is the complete opposite to that. The movie uses symbolism of her freeing birds from a cage to represent how she feels about her life and marriage; that it will trap her. Later on when Jafar takes control she is put into her worst nightmare, forced into being a subservient wife for someone she hates.

What she wants, which is represented and almost practically described in no uncertain terms, is to be free of her duties.

Just like Genie.

This isn't an accident or a coincidence. They didn't have two characters both put in a similar circumstance by mistake. It's called a fucking parallel.

I can't believe someone watched the whole movie and thought that Jasmine just wanted to fuck Alladin.

Mohammad was wrong on many things, but his stance on female suffrage and the right of the family patriarch to beat the shit out of any woman in his family for any reason were truly forward thinking ideals the Western world is not ready to relearn.

Also, not for a moment do I believe that it is a coincidence that Hollywood somehow managed to find a somewhat attractive actress for a character that is brown when they so consistently fail to do so with white female characters.

The real fucking tragedy here is that these mouthbreathers keep pretending like Leia in the OT was some incompetent damsel-in-distress that needed rescuing all the time, when it's blatantly obvious all three main characters have their own set of skills that mesh well together.

In order to be "progressive" the stronk feeemale characters have to be "better" than Leia. Let's not forget that despite plot-wise being a damsel in distress, Leia shit-talked everybody and was instrumental in her own rescue (the one who started shooting back at stormtroopers, giving Luke and Han cover to jump down the garbage chute). This kind of shit has to be ignored or revised for their narrative to work.

It also doesn't make any sense. Its forbidden for non-Muslims to marry Muslim women - its okay for Muslims to marry Christian and Jewish women without needing to convert so long as their children are raised as Muslims. The only time in history I heard a Christian marrying a Muslim was Ivan the Terrible marrying Qochenay, a woman from the Caucasus tribes and she had to convert to Eastern Orthodoxy to be accepted. I never, ever, ever heard of Arabs willingly handing over their daughters to be married to foreigners that weren't Muslims.

>Aladdin has a rival

>He's a mean White man

Couldn't they have just given Jafar a son like the vizier had in the story? You can still have Jafar plot to rule Agrabah, just that he'd rule through his son. He'd look for the genie as a back-up plan. He's go all out on conquering with magic once the deal fails, he and/or his son get driven out (the son could replace Iago as Jafar's confidant), and he gets his hands on the lamp.

It's "apocrypha", Cochise.

File: 84249192b472edf⋯.png (339 KB, 462x480, 77:80, Sultan-Aladdin.png)

If the Sultan is trying to marry his only daughter to a prince of Skanland, he's pretty much handing over rule of his kingdom to this foreign nation. The biggest question is obviously "Why?", but I doubt the deeper reasoning will be explored by this movie.

Since Disney is devoid of creativity at the moment, I think it's safe to assume that Skanland is an already existing Disney Kingdom, but shifted to a time before the events of the main movies. Or 10,000 years and an apocalypse after those movies, depending on your reasoning for Genie's knowledge

Since all we know is the name and the fact that the potential prince is blonde, the kingdom of Skanland could be from Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty, Frozen, Beauty and the Beast, or Tangled, since those five feature blonde royalty.

Perhaps Sultan was a tragic /ourguy/ who wanted to prevent his people from sliding into Islam? Perhaps one of the many magic users from those countries threatened him into surrendering without open conflict? Perhaps he sought to genetically distinguish Agrabah's royalty from the masses by making his descendants whiter? We'll need more information before we can form a better theory.

Still say it'd be easier to take more from the fairy tale and give Jafar a son.

Is this a reference to the Disney unified theory? I personally don't buy into it.

>I think it's safe to assume that Skanland is an already existing Disney Kingdom

It's literally just a region in Norway.

>But who knows how many people changed the original bible text however they wanted…

Here's a classic: "Though shalt not suffer a witch to live."

the original was "Thou shalt not suffer a poisoner to live," since poison was the most cowardly method of assassination. It was changed due to political pressure in the time of Solomon; poison was the favored method of murder by the Hebrew aristocracy

File: 9bbe2d6faaa35e8⋯.jpg (32.01 KB, 512x384, 4:3, Uncouthma.jpg)

Between Genie's proclamation that he'd been stuck in the lamp for 10,000 years (and that's just since his last master), his mentions of various anachronisms, the real world lore on Genies being that they were djinn bound by King Solomon (born 990 BCE, died 931 BCE), and the fact that the merchant at the start of the first movie knows what tupperware is, it's decidedly the future.

>It's literally just a region in Norway

Ah, so the prince in question must be Prince Uncouthma, pic related.

It can't be Uncouthma, since Jasmine's panties would hit the floor in a sodden mess and the movie would only be 15 minutes long.

Maybe Genies are some kind of Grant Morrison multi-dimensional beings and have some foreknowledge of other times.

You know, I read a really good unfinished fanfic that set Frozen in a backwater world in the Mechwarrior/Battletech universe, and it worked so well…

I've heard that the role of women changed for the worse depending on who currently translated the bible text, but these days I'm really doubtful regarding news that try to explain something that would force political correctness upon us.

> the merchant at the start of the first movie knows what tupperware is

That is also the genie you dummy. He's voiced by Robin Williams and has four fingers on his hands. Obviously the writers just had the genie break the fourth wall, and 10,000 years was either just hyperbole or it's a typical fantasy world with permanent medieval stagnation or it's a cartoon and has anarchronisms for jokes just like Hercules.

He starred in several well-liked movies over his life, and remakes are big now. Look forward to a new Hook.

>dat Elmer Fudd reference

Surprised they actually animated that.

>I read a really good unfinished fanfic that set Frozen in a backwater world in the Mechwarrior/Battletech universe

I want it.

At the end of the movie, why did Aladdin just assume that enslavement was the natural state of a genie? He was, of course, proven right after Jafar wished to be a genie, but what if he was wrong? That would have been the mother-of-all-fuckups if Aladdin accidentally created an omnipotent, evil being.

That line doesn't confirm that enslavement is their natural state, just their de-facto state. If all of the genies in the world were enslaved in lamps at some point in the past, that still wouldn't mean that was their natural state.

extensive knowledge of the lore on Solomon's binding of the djinn?

>If the Sultan is trying to marry his only daughter to a prince of Skanland, he's pretty much handing over rule of his kingdom to this foreign nation. The biggest question is obviously "Why?"

Asspull guess, but I think he's going to die in the movie. And he'll probably know he's dying, which will probably end up being something Jafar is doing to him, and wants to marry her off before he bites it. He'll die, something about Jasmine not being able to to be the ruler because she's a woman, muh feminism song, and bunch of other shit happens. The movie ends with Jafar beaten, Genie freed, and they don't bring up Jasmine and Aladdin marrying but somehow Jasmine becomes the Sultan and everyone claps.

At least that's what it feels like DIsney will do. It will manage to shit on the old movie, inject needless prog shit, while tearing down all the main human male characters in the process.

Given that they have JEJ doing Mufasa again, I'm actually kind of glad Robin Williams isn't around to get roped into being that fucking blue abomination.

The genie is the emotional core of the movie, and both his and Aladdin's character arcs revolve around each other. Aladdin shows genie that humans can be good people, and genie shows Aladdin that he already was the person he wanted to be. The ultimate tests for this are the 2nd and 3rd wishes. Genie isn't supposed to actually care about his master but when Al's life is threatened he bends the rules to save him, making the 2nd wish for him. His trust in Aladdin's goodness pays off with the 3rd wish where Aladdin wishes him free, when he could have had anything (which is supposed to indicate Al's benevolence since he's basically a king treating a slave as a person). Aladdin's trust in the genie is cemented by the genie going out of his way to save him. Genie had already come to care about Aladdin by wish 2.

There's some dumb aspects to this though, like Aladdin waiting until the last second to free genie when genie had demonstrated his loyalty and freeing him any time after that would sinply make him a more powerful ally (although maybe he didn't have the opportunity, I haven't seen the movie in like 8 years). Also, if Aladdin is such a good guy why was the onus on his slave to do the right thing first?

You’re right about the plot surrounding the wishes being a bit dumb. I just re-watched Aladdin last week and something that really stood out to me is the fact that the plot kinda just phones it in once it gets to the third act. After Jafar is discovered to be bewitching the Sultan and is ousted, Aladdin and Jasmine are set to be married and the conflict is seemingly resolved. If it were a classic fairy tale, the movie could have just ended right there with a “they lived happily ever after”.

What ends up happening, however, is that Aladdin is seemingly paranoid about being discovered as “not being a prince”, which he uses this as an excuse to not release the Genie. Without reading into it, this raises questions about how exactly the Genie granted Aladdin’s wish to be a prince in the first place. If the Genie literally turned Aladdin into a prince, then he’s a prince; he can’t be discovered to be a “fake” prince. That being said, I think it’s implied in this particular scene that Aladdin is really just keeping the Genie around because Aladdin still has self-confidence issues and still thinks he depends on the Genie. He’s scared that if the Genie goes, then everything will come crashing down somehow. That interpretation makes this one part of the plot reasonable, but this issue gets brought up again later.

When Jafar gets the lamp, he somehow “strips” Aladdin of his “princeness”. Literally, all he does is take his prince clothes from him, but everyone regards this as somehow having reversed the first wish. Hence, when the question of the third wish comes up, Aladdin has to choose between freeing the Genie and wishing to be a prince again. This conflict makes absolutely no sense unless you accept that Jafar somehow did undo Aladdin’s first wish. If that is the case, then it either means that the Genie really did only give Aladdin some new clothes and an entourage, or it means that Sorcerer Jafar had the ability to undo the wishes of the omnipotent Genie.

Even ignoring the implication of that plot point, there is still another issue with the third wish. The entire reason Aladdin would wish to be a prince again at that point is because “the law” says he can’t marry Jasmine unless he is one. At this point, anyone with a brain is probably wondering why this is even a problem for the royal family of a (presumably) absolute monarchy that can just rewrite the law to suit their needs. But, of course, the movie demands a moral conflict, and so this point is just ignored until Aladdin does the “right” thing and releases the Genie. Immediately afterwards, the Sultan comes up and does exactly what the audience was guessing earlier, retroactively making the whole conflict pointless.

tl;dr the conflict and its resolution make no sense and there’s no consistency

I'll point out that earlier drafts of Aladdin had the genie with no restrictions on how many wishes he can do. Indeed, you can see in the cut song Humiliate The Boy Jafar making genie go through way more than 3 wishes.

SOOO, I'd say the problem you point, at least to a point, roots in the decision to change how the genie's magic works. I suspect to avoid questions of "How come Aladdin just didn't wish for X" and make Al need to save his wishes.

You raise a number of interesting points

When Jafar revealed him, it called into question his birthright. The wish would have had to either change his ancestry or the lawyer genie mechanic would have had to come into play.

If you think about it, the latter happened. Aladdin's father is revealed to be the king of thieves in the 3rd movie. If this was a side effect of the wish, then Aladdin is the prince of thieves. The parade and such were just Genie dressing it up as is his wont, not a part of the wish

>Genie shows his true skin in this regular poster

Why is every movie poster blue and orange?

orange makes people subconsciously think of speed and energy, so they'll be more likely to get off their asses and go see the movie (the same principle is used in fast food). Blue is orange's complement, so it works as a good accent.

That casting would be unironically better

god everyone's hair is so gross. Look we all know everyone was disgusting, vermin filled stink bombs back then but this is supposed to be fantasy. Jesus. Apu looks terrible. Like some uncanny valley shit. Make him fucking appealing at least a little.

>Blue is orange's complement, so it works as a good accent.

Not only that. It actually makes orange look more intensive than it would when paired up with other colors.

It's the color combination that most easily attracts the eye and lets images look more dynamic and contrast cool scenes with action packed ones, basically the visual version of clickbait.
