Movie was pretty overrated to be honest family. I didn't hate it necessarily, but I expected more out of such a highly regarded animated feature-however it had its moments I guess. I hope Song of the Sea is better.

Honestly, I thought it was one of the greatest animated features I've seen in a long ass time. Its especially impressive given the fact it wasn't made on a massive American budget

If you're into history than looking up all the references makes it even more enjoyable, but overall I'd say it was one of the best animated films to come out inside of the decade it was released. The art was fantastic, the animation looked great, the plot and characters were all excellent, etc. I especially loved how terrifying they made the viking horde; they were this faceless, inhuman force-of-nature, more plague or monster than army. They did a great job with visual storytelling.
also, I don't mind the forced diversity as much in this case because as unlikely as it is the catholic church did have an international network of priests, and occasionally foreign priests would move around, especially for educational purposes.

It was kinda hipster-y and the plot wasn't so good.
Plus just 8 million for a budget to get stuck with Tartavosky's samurai jack art style?

The film is beautiful man. It's definitely a masterpiece with unique animation and character style and don't even get me started on the soundtrack.
Anti-SJW propaganda brainwashed you dude, stop cherry picking stuff to hate because of the few things here and there that don't really impact the film or the plot.
Also check out the 2nd one from the studio "Song of the Sea"

What everyone's canned response to this is that thet like the art and animation, although the girl's song and the part with the water serpent stood out to me.
Song of the Sea is way more exciting overall. That wicked cameo in the school bus..

Its a shame Song of the Sea didn't get much love but I enjoyed both movies.

Where's the first picture from? and why the shit didn't the plot focus on it? What I didn't like about Secret of Kills minus the awkward acting and directing, was the shitty plot about Brandon and his uncle surviving the impending viking doom and finishing the book of kells.
The book is just a very tiny fragment of the story.
It would be like focusing the entirety of the Arthur legends on how the blacksmither forged the holy grail. There were no adventures, just a random little monk drawing an art book.

Kells* anyway the biggest flaw in the movie was the uncle.
>I'll build a large wall around the abbey, that'll protect us.
>When I'm vastly outnumbered, I have no weapons and I'm full of nothing but cowardly civillians who can't fight worth a shit.
I think originally they did intend to give him an army. And more backstory about he saved his nephew from the viking invaders.

While the filler made it comfy, it also made for a boring movie. Why does Aisling appear 30 minutes into the movie?
Feels like The Hobbit with its 45 minute introduction.

Beautiful animation is really all I can say about the movie. It tried to mesh 3 different stories and they didn't fit properly. It had a cliche structure that was intentional but it definetly didn't make me enjoy waiting for that inevitable metaphor to play out. Then you got that sloppy ending which just rushed to get to the conclusion ignoring logical sense given the tragedy and learning from mistakes that climax should have had for both parent and child. A lot of the movie felt like chunks were missing that would make the story flow better. I'm guessing this is due to budget but It definetly wasn't the greatest animated movie at the time when people were praising it given the obviously weak pacing and story.

Indeed.
The main problem is the story. Everything else was good.
Also, at least the creator learned with Song of the Sea.

I remember that the movie producers especially aged her down to loli form so she doesn't look like a potential love interest for Brendan.
Originally she was suppose to be the same age as his, if not even taller and older sounding.
