Make an explicit effort to make your character stand out, first and foremost. Defining physical characteristic, be it in the color of their outfit, facial features, bodytype, whatever. As a silhouette they should be easily picked out as themselves from the rest of the characters.

You've mentioned that character's an alien, so make them visibly different from humans, Star Trek aliens were notoriously lazy. Come up with her home-planet's atmosphere, general habitations, her species' role in the food chain, and then design her physical characteristics off of that; for example, she might come from a cold world, so give her fur or go full-Eskimo with it and give her thick clothing and a chubby bodytype.

As far as personality goes, treating them more or less as a real person is an excellent way to get a feel for general mentality. Absolutely avoid one-note characters, flat personalities, being a mouthpiece for the author. If they hold a certain opinion, take several steps back and wonder what has happened to them or how they arrived at that opinion to figure out why they hold it. This is purposefully excluded from political-mouthpiece characters because typically either the author doesn't have the writing ability to believably make a character reach that conclusion, the author themselves doesn't have a good reason for it, or they realize that any reason they come up with for their character to have that opinion would make their opinion laughable.

If you couldn't already guess, Deimos is the blonde dude, I tried to give his outfit a sort of Treasure Planet vibe. Topaz was a bipolar elemental creature and ended up being a lot like Ruby. Keres was influenced off of Malachite and Alexandrite, but I'll start fixing her up later when I make the sketch of Kira'a new design. Lucien also has a Pearl feel to her character.

Since you've already stated they're heavily Steven Universe inspired to the point of most of those being almost directly lifted from it you should go back and redesign a lot of them. Play up Keres's monster angle and make her more of a nightmarish creature with elements from the other aliens. Deimos gives kind of a relaxed-authority figure vibe I like. Make Topaz's halves look nothing alike. Same advice for Lucien as for Kira, make her more distinctly alien through non-human features.

Think of her planet and its climates and where her species' primarily living spaces would be. Arid or humid, hot or cold, mountainous or flat. Design her as a humanoid but with keeping the environmental requirements of her planet in mind, for example maybe her species has developed facial patterns or colorations for identifying potential mates from afar on flat plains, or the aforementioned fur/"blubber" and warm clothing for an arctic climate.

Well, this connects with the four-fingered markings on Kira. the four fingers are a representation of the four deities who are stilled unnamed bc I never got that far with this concept who use their powers to rule the galaxy and keep it safe. Originally, Keres was a part of the five fingers, but she realized she could use her power for ebil and ended up splitting from the group. Yeah Artie was based off older style cartoons. He comes from a cartoon dimension where at your teenage years you choosewhat animation style you want. His design was mostly combining Oswald and Felix together. You're not really supposed to know what the hell he is exactly fitting with the idea of the Warner Bros and sister.

Artie was somewhat meant as a 'Sad Clown' role in it. He's more willing to find violent solutions to jobs usually involving bombs or whatever he can pull out of his satchel. The sad clown role comes in later on from the fact he used to have a show in his dimension that was cancelled for unknown reasons. As a result, since getting a show is a big form of income, his Minnie-esque girlfriend left him.

There's also something with his family as his father is a comedy toon like him while his mother is a political one.

Anyway, on to actual character design stuff. >>528471 already covered making sure to give each character a distinctive silhouette/body shape that differentiates them, so no need for me to get into that.

I'd say that having a high level of detail in a design isn't necessarily a bad thing, so long as it follows the overall shapes and direction of the design. What I've found to be the case is that clean and simple color blocking is far more important than trying to avoid fine detail. This way you can have a high level of detail so that the character doesn't look over-simplified up close, and as long as the detail follows simple color blocks it can be easily abstracted out of the design for medium and wide shots (pics related).

In the case of the armor image, I could even pull more detail out of the gloves and buckles and still not lose the "essence" of the design. While the full version has a high amount of fine detail, that detail is dictated by the overall shapes of the design. As such, the fine detail can be removed without compromising the shapes.

All I can really say about color selection is to avoid pure neutrals. Even if a design is dominated by grays (such as the armor example) try to make sure that all of the "grays" you use have a little bit of color in them. Unless you're working exclusively in grayscale, in which case ignore this advice.

Well im no expert but from a personal opinion it all looks pretty good. Though you might want to amplify the feminine characteristics of Reina, she's bordering on the line of looking like a pre-op tranny. Also Im not to fond of the her armored suit design, it just kinda looks generic. Unless its supposed to be like that I love the curvature of the hips/ legs but nothing really is screaming to me like I should care.

I agree with you on your thoughts about detail but the style you went with the armor reminds of the dull militarized mechanical look most artist (Including the industry as a whole) seem to be heading when they're making any form of futuristic sci-fi equipment. This includes the clean white apple look too

Look how the design of the Master Chief differentiates from Halo 3 to Halo 4. Halo 4 looks a lot more detailed and sophisticated but it loses the charm of what made the original design so great. The Halo 4 design could be copied and pasted to an entirely different game and people would probably not see the difference, while Halo 3's design and its unique somewhat cartoony style is recognizable from a distance. A more extreme example would be Doomguy and his redesign for Doom 2016; and lets not get started about design of Michael Bay's Transformers.

You're right that I could probably push the feminine aspects just a little bit further, but she's meant to look both /fit/ and relatively androgynous (with the exception of dem hips, because space ninjas need a lot of leg-strength).

Yeah, I'm still getting that nailed down. I'm probably going to abandon the two-tone gray on the bodysuit because it breaks up the silhouette in a way I don't like. I'm not really sure how to address the dullness of the color palette. She's a stealth operator, so that sort of limits my color choice when it comes to keeping the color scheme somewhat believable.

Don't even get me started. Halo 4 is the reason that I began scaling back the use of fine detail in my design work. You should have seen how Reina's armor looked back in 2012. Pic related. Look at that mess.

Classic Doomguy may be iconic, but I still think his design looks like crap. It has no unity. The helmet doesn't match the vest doesn't match the pants. New Doomguy looks like crap for exactly the reasons you mentioned. "Detail for detail's sake" is a trend in vidya that cannot die soon enough.

Right, I'll try to make it short and concise.

Firstly, as you have not doubt surmised, he's training as a student of kung fu. However, the reason he is training is, in my opinion, is somewhat unique.

As you may have guessed based on his eye and the strange face towards the center of the page, this character is actually a robot, not a human. He is an experiment in artificial intelligence and advanced robotics. He was developed in secret as the first major step in a project to begin digitizing human thought patterns and implanting them in a robotic body, in short, trying to create immortality.

His artificially intelligence got out of hand however, and he achieved self awareness. He fled the laboratory and went into hiding. He traveled the world in secret, always staying ahead of those sent to capture him. Eventually he came to rural China, where he found a small school that taught Kung Fu. He concluded that he should learn self defense. He managed to convince the master of the school to bring him in as a student, living at the school and doing work in lieu of payment.

He is currently still learning, and has gained a lot of confidence, he will soon be ready to resume his travels.

I suppose she could still be female uh………….. maybe one could encompass a more dismal, apathetic set of emotions Without making her a rock; while the other could be the happy go lucky spaz who lacks serve hindsight. Maybe you could split her name to Toa and Paza (Just add an A to Topaz - Topaza). Obviously one's a voice of reason while the other is the voice of chance, they'll need one another or else they'll go crazy. A little quirk that might be fun, one of them maybe Paza (The energetic spaz) can only speak in reverse and Toa is the only one that can naturally translate her gibberish. They could also try to finish each others sentences (If you do consider the whole reverse speech idea, this could play into the sentence finishing as a comedic element if written well). Another idea would be, their original form didn't have any powers per-say but after getting split apart and turned into some other creature (They were experimented on so lets say they were transformed into something else) they gained they're current set of abilities.

Alright. I'll try to keep this short and sweet.

Like I said, the characters are forced to dimension hop. The entity taking them from place to place only gives hints as to what it is and what it's really doing. One is an empty void with a wooden toy chest the group often finds itself in, almost like a waiting room. Another is that its behavior has a pattern. Every time the group solves a problem in the world, or fixes something, they get put in the next. But, there's no sign or anything telling them where it is or what it is.

As they go along and solve more and more problems, they try everything to communicate with it and ask it what it wants. They try refusing to to anything, telling it to go fuck itself. They try following it when it shows its hand (literally.) They try praying to it, like it's some kind of god, but little do they know it can go on forever.

Now, the reason I'm "hiding behind someone's post" is because that picture is a placeholder. I want to write books, and I want to get set up as soon as possible. But, I think visuals like character portraits would add alot to my work. They draw people in, they enhance it, they give people a better idea of what they're getting into. Drawing comics would be great, but I know they can take years to finish.

Well I was thinking of giving him a surrogate father in the form of a former scientist who was working on his creation. His father began to have doubts about the ethical and social consequences of this project. Eventually, upon learning some form of damning information he freed the robot, and traveled with him for a little while until he passed away (I was thinking he could be killed by the agents who tracked him and the robot down, but I'm still debating)

As for other characters I was thinking that the person who teaches the robot kung fu could be a kind elderly women. When the robot arrived in her town, he had recently lost his father figure, and she sensed his sadness and took pity on him and brought him into her school to take care of him. It was during this time that he decided that he should learn to defend himself and she accepted him as one of her students.

What about a support character. Having an inexperienced robot man as a protagonist seems a little shallow. Maybe he has a young companion, maybe a relative of the kung-fu master that he has sworn to protect. that way its more of a life experience as both characters have much to learn about the real world and it's bountiful beauties. Then the action can also serve as a learning point for the younger one, about how the world is cruel and dangerous at times and we must learn to be strong and persevere. while the young-ling teaches the robot to be curious and seek companionship and teach him how to duggy and stuff.

I should probably read the rest of the thread but here's what I learned you do for good character design.

1: good recognizable silhouette

2: "originality or bust" anon is a faggot who would get a sparkledog furry oc special snowflake oc to be "unique" just because a horse or a cat has been done before doesn't mean it can't be done again.

There's a quote 'good artists imitate, great artists steal'. Don't actually steal but if you see something you like don't be afraid to use it as inspiration and jump off to your own thing as long as you're not wholesale stealing it. (Looks like you already did that though i guess)

3: make a style board. It's a picture you will use to guide and inspire character creation.

First think of the character you want to create and scour google images to find shit that matches your vision of the character. Maybe a certain weapon here or a certain headdress there or an article od clothing that matches your ideas. Get about 25-ish but can go up to 50 if you want i guess on one big reference collage and keep it around for reference. ALWAYS DRAW WITH REFERENCE.

here's the process.

1 think of character

2 get style board inspiration for character

3 draw a small thumnail sketch of your character silhouette using the style board to inspire / guide you and keep on track to the character "feel"

4 draw 9 more thumb nail sketches of your character the same way with variations or different ideas. Maybe they're tall or short or fat or have a robot arm or have only one arm. Maybe they have the hero figure or the thug slouch. Make each silhouette distinct and their own thing rather than a variation on the previous one. And make sure each one is good, likable.

We're going for diversity of ideas here not perfection at every turn. You can always throw out bad ideas but you can't retroactively think of more.

5: happy with your sketches? Good now block shade them out (roughly shade them) using a shader ball. If you're on the comp make the background grey and have the character shading from very light grey to dark grey.

6: if you're not on the comp maybe just skip shading idk but try it anyway. Here is where im not sure if so much work is necessary (it's alot easier on comp) but add or remake the block shaded ones into more finely shaded characters where you can actually see surface detail or design lines and shit on the caracter.

7:

Choose your favourite shaded figure or best figure and make the complete char colored or whatever you want with it. You may not have to do crazy shading stuff if you know it's going to be a cartoon i guess.

My advice is to focus on shapes. For example, circles are subconsciously understood to represent energy and humor. Round characters like Elmer Fudd, Charlie Brown, and the South Park kids are circular as a result. Think about what you want to character to convey, then pick some shapes with which to work, then pick colors that you understand to carry the same message, and work out from there.

Uh….How about in the event where the father is killed, the robot somehow loses his memory? But in the manner of how the story is told, you would not tell the reader that the main protagonist is a robot. Focusing more on the emotional connection the old woman makes with the robot (With addition to other characters) while eluding to a more dystopian 80's or 90's punk style world. You'd give signs that he may be something else but by all means the readers should be left guessing what the hell is happening and why some parts of his story don't add up until the big reveal is made.

Hey OP, i got some advice for you. Firstly it's cool to emulate a style you like and all, but you shouldn't just copy and paste. Instead you should study. Find what attracts you to that style and study it, and apply it to your own. FIND YOUR VOICE. key word YOUR. Learn about how simple shapes can influence character design. Most importantly learn about appeal. Why are some character designs so good and why are some absolute ass? Don't give up and keep improving.

well, after a week of procrastinating, i worked on Kira, Toa, and Paz's design a bit more. I tried to follow the advice of >>529728 and gave Kira's eyes tapetum lucidum and made it wider and more cat-like. She's also taller now.

For Toa, I made her body a solid rather than just a liquid, but her hair is still water. Paz is pure electricity, so I considered giving her gloves so she could actually touch things without harming it. As for her body, I wanted to make her sort of like a bear, where she mostly goes around on all fours.

Please feel free to give more input on the improvements or advice if you want.

See the problem with you, the way these characters are designed, they don't have a coherent flow. They look like an odd mixture of that anime style they use in the Mega Man spinoff games with massive tumors on their arms.

I know you're going for the whole anime parody angle but you either go full out when it comes to designing the characters or use a completely different/ known style instead. Just look at the shows that have already succeeded in the concept already.

It's just the framework of a setting, but it's essentially an ahistorical thing where WWI never happened.

Russia and Austria still goes to shit in bloody revolutions, and by the 1930's you have a gridlock of the great powers, armed to the teeth and looking for the slightest excuse to go at each others throats, and a Trotsky led Soviet looking for a clear shot at expanding the world revolution to the rest of Europe.

Our main character here will run into a whole variety of organizations and individuals trying to keep the peace in Eastern Yurop, often thwarting rebellions which leads to personal conflict, seeing as the Czech republic is a product of rebellion itself in this timeline.

I picture something in the vein of Tintin; silly to serious adventures across the world with an overall message of not letting the agenda of large empires or international organizations thwart the rights of individual nations and peoples.

That's the gist of it, nothing set purely in stone yet.

Yes there are explosions involved in most of their missions but people I've shown the script to have said that the comic seems a little more down to Earth than just 'LOL THEY'RE FIGHTING ROBOT NINJAS IN SPACE' which some expected from the characters. I could see the similarities but the differences come up to me as well.

Wander Over Yonder seems like they get put into the situations they're in just because they entered an area where something was going down. I should take time to actually watch the show before I cast some judgement like that, am I far off because I'm not trying to trash it.

Tom and Artie more function off a theme that they're doing this because it's virtually the only thing they know how to do. Tom was forced into military service at a young age (he comes from a cutesy dimension where unicorns were constantly at war with some other cutie-thing over trivial things) so he's worn, tired and generally just wants the pay so he can go back to their home. Artie only knows cartoon violence and how to solve things with it, he usually wants to find an excessively violent solution to their jobs since it would be quicker but is usually talked down from it.

I've been focusing on improving on character design and acting because I'm used to throwing designs together without any thought behind it (like these sketches). Basically we give a handful of traits and we all come up with a character design. Make sure one trait is a colour/colour scheme(ie: pink or Fall).

So, for example:

So fun little exercises. Not sure if we should standardise the traits more, or add more traits? I think it's important to keep colour as one. I was thinking we could give everyone who wants to join in a set time, like 24 hours or 48, and have a time set when everyone can post their results. Posting after the 24/48 hours work time is okay, but not before(so no one peeks at others' work). I think welcoming all skill levels is important, too. So helpful critique should be based on where you see the artist currently is. No hug box, but if the artist clearly needs to work on fundamentals of shapes in deep space don't rag on them for only having one light source, etc.

I think having everyone post a couple design- ie: what you this is your best + what your think is your worst will help encourage 'break out' drawing and pushing designs.

Yeah a lot of what you've been posting looks pretty Tumblr-fied. Like that's the community you've been getting comments/surrounded by.

I don't mean tumblrfied as in any political ideology, I mean an art style and an animation style/style of moving the form in action.

It'd really help if you stepped outside that community for a while, even if it means lurking around the forums of an artist community totally 180 from what you normally do- like body builder fans or anime, etc. Just get fresh perspective on how to simplify the body/how to move the body forms in action for a little while. Refresh your artistic vision of the body. (going back and doing some medical diagram type dawings of joints and muscles in motion/hardcore anatomy studies on the human body is always a good reset button if you get stuck in a stylistic rut. And never hurts to brush up on human anatomy anyways, so it's winwin!)

Guys- first of all people who did the challenges that's AMAZING, you rock!

Second of all- I think 300 is the bump limit so is it worth while to make a new thread for character creation practice? Also instead of

the really open ended options would it be better to be more specific to get more people to participate? Like give a colour pallette or grey scale tone list. And say to make a character in Tarzan style or Liefeld style,etc. I wanted to avoid specific styles since it's better to focus on facets of the character rather than try and copy a style.

If it would make more people participate I can do that though.

Also- is one week a better time frame since this board is smaller than half /co/?

I think if I make a new thread I'll start out with the robo kitty stats if that's okay with every one.

I personally think these threads should be about the OCs that people are making themselves. Sure the group challenges are fun but if you let them dominate the thread then it's just gonna go downhill, most /co/ centered things that involve group designs just results in fights.
