You do realize they've already done this right? It was called Gotham Central. It was a great concept and I personally really dug the art style, but the reception was lukewarm. I've only read a few arcs, but from what I've heard the writing was pretty shit overall. The most famous story arc is about Montoya coming out as a lesbian, being treated differently, and then being kidnapped by Two-Face. Needless to say it one a lot of awards.

I really enjoyed the "Soft Targets" story arc though. Joker fucks with the GPD for shits and giggles but get's captured. He's hidden bombs or some shit and they try to interrogate him, but he's only interested in talking to Batman – as usual, it's all about Batman. Later Joker kills more cops while in custody, Batman magically appears in building, plays word games with the Joker, diffuses the bombs and resolves the situation; meanwhile the GPD is left to clean up the bodies of their friends and coworkers. The arc is a fairly well executed excuse to examine the frustration of the GPD, who go out and get killed by hyper-competent psychopaths, but it's all in the context of Batman vs Villain conflicts; the villains don't even recognize the GPD, only Batman. But what really needles them is how hopelessly powerless they are. This is pretty well demonstrated with the Joker: even when they've captured him they can't get him to talk, they can't contain him, and they can't keep him from killing even while in custody. They have to wait for the retard in the bat costume to take down the circus freak, because the freaks and retards control the world and the GPD are just pawns and cannon fodder. And it wouldn't be so bad if they could believe that Batman was the problem, and that if he was gone they could just put guys like Joker away for good. But they can't believe that, because they can't ignore the fact that whatever there's always going to be some perfectly executed villainous scheme that take them into account and goes way over their head. With or without Batman, they have no agency. The retard in the Bat costume showing up before you get impaled on your own nightstick is the best case scenario.

Being a Gotham Police Officer is an existential nightmare.

The writing was uneven. You had half the book being written by Ed Brubaker, the good 2000s Batman writer, and you had the other half being written by Greg Rucka, the bad 2000s Batman writer. Then Brubaker left for Marvel and Rucka was stuck running the show.

I don't mind Batman having a darker tone, it suits him, but there's a line between 'adult' and 'edgy' that a content creator has to be careful not to stumble over.

 No.538701

>>538687

Yeah, but everyone's range and line between adult mature, and overly "Shadow the EdgeHog" is going to be differerent, yes?

For my own preference at least, silly but not enjoyable would be the Schumacher batman. Light but has episodes where it's pretty serious drama and enjoyable, animated Brave and the bold.

The darker themed batman that I still enjoy would be Miller DKR book and animated, cause hell I still do, IDGAF. Nolan's trilogy, even with the bane meme. Fuck, maybe I enjoyed the third one only for the bane meme.

Also even if it is nostalgia, the Neal Adams batman since those were my first batman comics. Though I haven't read it in a long time so I'm admittedly fuzzy on where Adams batman would be in the light to dark spectrum. And almost anything by Bruce Timm and voiced by Conroy is probably my ideal middle ground Batman.

> Modern Batman has been wedged firmly into edgy territory, and it's getting rather tiresome.

I know what you're saying, though wasn't the really old pulp batman was pretty brutal. A lot of the origin blurb always plays up the Zorro influence. But shit mang, wasn't Bat also heavily influenced by the Shadow? With the no guns thing brought in later to distinguish him from Lamont Cranston?

>though wasn't the really old pulp batman was pretty brutal

You miserable casual fucking faggot with your fucking reddit paragraph formatting. I cannot begin to articulate the level of my hatred of you and your ilk with the few words allotted to me in the English language.

I've read all of this "early batman" that you babble insistently about. Generally, this "early batman" amounts to 11 stories before the appearance of Robin, "The Case of the Chemical Syndicate", "Frenchy Blake's Jewell Gang", "The Bat-Man Meets Doctor Death", "The Return of Doctor Death", "Batman vs. The Vampire, Part 1", Batman vs. The Vampire, Part 2", "The Batman Wars Against the Dirigible of Doom", "Peril in Paris", "The Case of the Ruby Idol", "Professor Hugo Strange", and "The Screaming House".

In those eleven stories, seven criminals die due to Batman's actions, eight if you count vampires as people. Of those seven, five are clear self-defense, two could be construed as manslaughter (only one could count as cold-blooded murder, but that's only if you count vampires as people). Of all of those, Batman didn't use his gun on any of them, except the vampire because silver bullets kill vampires. Batman fires his gun only three times in those eleven stories, none of which are directed at human beings (unless you count vampires as human beings).

Outside of the body-count, the content of the those eleven Batman stories is fucking tame. Compared against Batman's contemporaries, such as the syndicated comic strip Dick Tracy, Batman was down-right bloodless. You can tell that early Batman really wasn't a character that could hold his own title until Robin showed up to make him interesting.

So, with all that in mind, you're a fucking idiot. You've fucking bought into DC's line that Batman was all "GRIM AND DARK" hook, line, and sinker. Through you're display of that belief, you've outted yourself as a wretched casual, no better than the Big Bang Theory crowd. You don't actually know Batman, let alone have anything really to add to any conversation on Batman. It disgusts me that you would even begin to think your opinion carries any weight in this discussion.

You can just go ahead and fuck off back to reddit, cuck/co/, CBR, superherohype, or whatever fucking piece of shit online forum that allows your uneducated kind to breed. The rest of us have comic related bullshit to discuss.

Pretty much what others have said. They don't embrace Batman's history, good or bad. Bruce Timm really does feel like he loves the character, which is why we got shows like BTAS, JL/U, and Brave and the Bold.

Someone that has appreciation for the past like him can make something really good. You don't create a generation of fans for a character without showing how much you love it by creating things with consistent quality

That all said, West's show wasn't that good, and his only tie to Batman is playing the role. Even if it's not accurate, Stan Lee had a hand in Marvel's history, where as you can't really say the same for Batman and West. Maybe for the TV shows, which is why Timm or whoever opted for him to play Gray Ghost.

I dunno, I still respect what he did, but I'm not too broken up about him being ignored for the DCCU Mostly because it's not been that good anyway
