OuiDo! Productions, the people behind SB, completely ignored the majority of the Sonic lore/elements built up since its creation. Nevermind that this information can be accessed by anyone with a simple Google search. Nope! Let's just make shit up along each episode and use the most cliche'd tropes from every cartoon ever.
But nah, its cool; Its a kid's show! Fuck character delevopment, back stories, lore, and consistency cause only stupid kids like this show so whatever! Its not like good-written shows like Batman: TAS, The early Simpsons, or Samurai Jack were well-remembered after thier prime! :^)
I want to say SB makes me angry, but it doesn't. I'm more annoyed at this "cartoon". Or at least this poor-man's attempt at being a cartoon. Sure, it had a great start with its pilot and first few episodes, but that's about it. The rest was either poorly animated, poorly written, or just plain empty in feeling.
That's one of its main problems; the feel. I know feelings are subjective, but does this honestly feel like Sonic the Hedgehog? The high-energy, fast-pace action-adventure Sonic? Well, SB has action sometimes. It claims to have comedy, and its certainly there. The adventure, however, is absent. Why must Sonic and co. stay on one island? In one Sonic game alone, i.e. Sonic Adventure, characters can travel to multiple locations outside and in an island.
There's no adventure in SB, and it lacks the energy for adventure. Sonic himself is more lazy, sluggish and seems bored most of the time. Sure, Sonic is known to take breaks, but not the majority of the time. Many of the characters like Sonic are inconsistent to whom they're suppose to be. I get its an episodic show, but at least have the major and minor characters stay the same.
TL;DR: Sonic Boom's shit and Season 2's gonna be shit.

Hardly. There's no mention of Lyric, the gimmicky "Ener-beams" are rarely used, and rings are complete gone (expect when Tails mentioned them in one episode just for one joke.) The only slight improve was with Shadow since in the RoL he acted more like a Saturday morning cartoon villian. In the cartoon, Shadow's more closer to his original self.
The reason why characters like Metal Sonic and Shadow are there seem to have no real reason. They're just lazily added in for fan-service. Hell, even Eggman breaks the forth wall just to give Shadow a reason to be cool. No internal backstory, no past episodes to show why he's cool, he's just "The second coolest character in the whole cannon" Sure that's funny now, but it gets confusing after a while. Sure, forth wall jokes are funny, but this isn't the first its happen. Its like the Sonic Boom cast know they're in a cartoon, and are just going with the confusing flow. There's no care about world around them, no care about who they're based on. Who the fuck actually care about or within Sonic Boom?

Like anything Sonic, it's a hilarious clusterfuck that's more complicated than it should ever need to be.
It mostly comes down to how back in the days of Sonic yore, Sega wanted to have a different spin on the franchise for every market; Japan got content different from the US and the UK, and they shopped around the IP to various people. Hence three different Sonic cartoons in the 90s (SatAM, Adventures and Underground) with extremely different takes on the franchise, as well as the Archie comics and the UK Sonic the Comic having their own characters, plot and setting entirely seperate from each other. While in Japan there's that OVA, which I still think was a failed pilot for a Sonic anime, and later Sonic X.
Thing is, Sega's repeatedly thrown a legal fit whenever the comics even tentatively reference something from the OVA or other series because apparently Sega's copyright lawyers can't get their shit together, and they don't have the license to publish anything from the Japanese-made stuff in the USA, and vice versa. I think that may also extend to the games; there's a reason the only few cameos that Archie stuff has made in Sonic were in American-made spinoffs.
And it doesn't help that when the series DID try to pick up on long forgotten plot threads and reference the Archie comics indirectly in Sonic Chronicles, that game was both a mess that Bioware doesn't want to have anything more to do with and the trigger for Penders suing Archie to get control of his fancharacters, and actually winning because of Sega and Archie's incompetence. So I imagine that any significant use of those elements is completely verboten now.
Sonic Boom focused mainly on what people actually like about the series and isn't a legal minefield; the core characters they know they DO own, and silly cartoon animal antics. (Also Eggman)

Sega owns everything cartoon-wise as ar as the actual characters go, they just don't have the distribution rights since they're not into that business. So they own Princess Sally and the like, and they own SatAM, but they can't go around selling it for viewership in other countries. The reason why they only appeared in American spinoffs is the same reason Rotor isn't in StC and Anton Verruga wasn't in early Archie- the creatives in the franchise tend to focus on the material of their region. SatAM has no presence in Japan, why would the Japanese-made games use elements from it at any point?
The OVA situation is weirder, only because we're not sure what it is, but overall this kind of legal entanglements are extremely common and not at all a sign of incompetence (except for Penders, and again, that's Archie's)- just see Death's Head, ROM SpaceKnight, or MegaMan Battle Network
