Honestly, pretty clear as messages go; no one can really judge without knowing the full context, but at the same time, everyone involved makes damn well sure we CAN'T know the full context.
The world's too big and complicated to hope that our own little judgements have anything to do with the reality, and history is just whoever manages to write the most popular books.

Miller has at some point pretty much admitted that Batman is insane, a Don Quixote who happens to be competent- and in doing so, maybe he has a point, or at least says and does some very good things, even though he does bad things as well. Which, well, is kinda the whole point.
