Storytime of

Spider-Woman #5

All-New All-Different Marvel has taken some pretty drastic changes with the beloved characters of Marvel comics. One of the more notable differences is that of Jessica Drew.

Spider-Woman no longer dresses up in a skintight bodysuit, but rather in a less fun more practical vest and yoga pants. Characters are getting more easily adaptable to movies and tv for casual nobodies realistic for our new modern age and are starting to deal with more realistic situations, like hanging out with friends and parenting! That's right, the formerly-pregnant Spider-Woman has now spawned a child, but she will learn that raising a baby isn't as easy as punching bad guys! Can a story about momhood be entertaining or will this entire goddamned issue be about the goddamned baby? You better pay 3.99 to find out? Wait, where are you goi

>repeat panels

I have a degree in fine arts.

I have wasted the time and money to study art. At this point, I'm able to tell the difference between artists on line quality alone. One of the deepest joys I get from comics is appreciating the line-work of the artists involved. Each stroke of a pencil or scratching of ink is distinct, unique, and beautiful. Even the small mistakes, like a panel boarder drawn just a little too long or the clear differences between panels, emanates a deep humanity that we can appreciate.

Then there's this shit. Fucking two pages of repeat panels. I find one repeat panel mildly disgusting, but a page of them is revolting. It's laziness that serves no-one, not even a punch-line. It brings no fucking enjoyment to my eyes to see the same art over and over again with no variation. It's a wretchedness that cuts into my very soul.

I have a degree in fine arts.

You guys might not like comic books being sold to people of a different demographic, you hateful nerds, but let's see what Nick Lowe, senior editor, has to say!

>I hope this issue wrecked you like it wrecked me.

>I hope the honesty, truth, and love poured into this one convinced any skeptics.

>Team Spider-Woman would like to talk to any expecting or new parents who might be reading this….

And then Nick Lowe talks about parenting tips and suggestions on what to do! If you're soon to be bringing a human being into this world, luckily there's help in the back pages of the comic book!

>Lastly, one thing I'd like to make clear, having a child is amazing and can be so fulfilling (it has been for me), but it isn't something to rush into. And single parent-hood isn't something that we're endorsing or suggesting here. Jessica has mad a specific decision for herself, knowing that she has a particularly strong network of support. It's tremendously hard to raise a child with two people and a support network, and it's even harder to do it alone. If you're considering making this decision, think about it long and hard.

That's true. It doesn't help that comic shop owners seem to finally be wising up to the fact that they're getting fleeced by Diamond's shitty business model either.

Though I do wonder if the Big Two would've been able to stall the decline if they hadn't huffed a fuckton of glue to think Secret Wars or Convergence were good ideas. If Marvel and DC were run by smarter people, they'd probably buckle down and start working on a new business model. But seems like both companies are in willful denial about the state of the industry.

As complex as those crossovers were, I think they would've worked out with a different strategy. Instead of having 20 Secret Wars miniseries and 20 different Convergence fights along with the main series going on at once, would it have been less cluttered to hoard like 5 of them in big books? Like, instead of 10 individual fights in separate books, they could have two very big books of five each, having it separated in a way where not everyone's just buying the popular characters' books and ignoring the lesser known ones, so shelves aren't as cluttered? I know next to nothing about comic distribution, so would this idea even work?

>Was scooby doo that popular?

Yes, though I think mostly because it's been around for so long that it's seeped into the public consciousness by this point. It's probably helps that Scooby Doo is one of those shows where it's really easy to tweak for new generations.

Though that being said I'll be very surprised if this comic does even remotely well. Even if there were enough people fanatical about Scooby Doo to go buy a comic about it, it looks like this is going to deviate from the mystery solving angle so much that it will probably alienate them. And regular comic-readers likely aren't going to be interested since it looks like a generic science fiction setting with Hanna Barbera characters awkwardly painted over it (with an extra helping of hipster given that Shaggy design).

It looks like a comic designed to appeal to no one, is what I'm saying.

Today's comics are pumped out for the sake of fulfilling progressive agenda. I mean, shit like this isn't even intellectually challenging or remotely exciting its just trite made to appeal to girl readers.

Sad thing is that as it dips into cancellation numbers, they refuse to fucking pull these things out of their misery. >Today's comics are pumped out for the sake of fulfilling progressive agenda.

That is the stupidest /pol/lock statement I've read on this board to date.

Today's comics are not "pumped out for the sake of fulfilling a progressive agenda". Today's comics are pumped out to make money based on gimmicks. Right now, the gimmick is "pandering to sjw types" as they desperately try to find a new money source. Spider-Woman getting a baby, Whor, Squirrel Girl on-going, "practical costumes", Kate Leth on everything, these are all schemes to liberate hipster sjw money out of their wallets with shit they think is important. It's a completely hallow enterprise that's coldly calculated. Of course, it's not doing well because sjws don't actually buy anything, but considering how hard DC and Marvel fucked the shops with their last big events, they really have no choice but to double down.

It's the gimmicks that are the real problem. Whether comics are sjw or redpill is irrelevant. It's still going to be full of shallow pandering cooked-up in corporate board rooms with no real creativity involved. That's why I don't want to save comics, I want to burn them.

The father is unknown at the moment, but will most likely come up at the end of this run or when Marvel needs to drum up something exciting a few years down the line.

The name of the baby is currently undecided or at least undisclosed to the audience. I doubt this is anything significant and it's probably going to be saved as the closing point of a dramatic moment.

I don't know if the baby having powers has been discussed, but it hasn't been mentioned in this comic and not shown so at this point I can only assume it's just an average, nameless, baby.

A fair amount. Upper management decide what Marvel does and doesn't publish. For instance, upper management have effectively killed publication of any Fantastic Four books because Fox own the movie rights and upper management want those rights back.

Perlmutter's friendship with Trump is probably the primary reason why they're using Loki as his stand-in in the comics, rather than outright using Trump.

>The heads of every major Hollywood studio are probably friends with Trump as well.

Given the way they carry on about Trump I sincerely doubt that. Or else they're fair weather friends like Mitt Romney.

>Is the fact that film and TV is left-wing and has been for decades suddenly untrue?

Hollywood's left wing politics have always been disingenuous. As far as studios are concerned, they've always been fiscally and economically conservative. I wouldn't doubt that, behind closed doors, many studio heads are fairly socially conservative as well.

It's the people on the lower rungs that tend to be more liberal.

If politics weren't so important and the only thing that mattered was the bottom line, why is there no attempt to try to appeal to Trump supporters? I mean, there's clearly a sizable market. If the goal is "piss people off, make money" a pro-Trump comic from the point of view of the Sons of the Serpent would probably do that.

>Hollywood's left wing politics have always been disingenuous

If attention is their goal then why did they bother censoring Madelyne's underboob in Secret Wars? It was a change that almost nobody noticed, and it didn't get them any publicity. It was just a way to make the book more "pc." That was the first one that came to mind, but there are many examples of small things like that that clearly are just the ideological views of the creators shining through, not some complex conspiracy to gain notoriety.

>why is there no attempt to try to appeal to Trump supporters?

Social Justice Warriors have a lot of money. Tumblr has the wealthiest userbase of any social network, with an average income of $80,000 per annum. Most Social Justice Warriors are young, teens to early 20s. Most of them are therefore more likely to spend their money on frivolous shit. Many of them have little knowledge in the ways of online piracy.

In other words, the optics are good.

Trump supporters, conversely, tend to be more working class. Most Trump supporters tend to be older people, with families and responsibilities. Most are therefore more likely to spend their money on important shit.

Leaving the issue of personal politics aside, and I do agree that most of the people working on the creative side of Marvel Comics strongly disagree with/oppose Donald Trump, the optics are very bad.

Neither group buys comics. But, considering that American comic book publishers are by-and-large desperate, going for the demographic that has more disposable income, and therefore is more likely to 'pay-off' should attempts to appeal to them be successful, probably seems like the better risk

All management cares about is cash. Writers do seem to care about the agenda, and are kept around because it guarantees clicks/sales/coverage, both from people who agree and from people that don't.

Just look what happened after gamergate popularized archive.is. All of a suddenly service owners started getting messages to remove archived sites or to apply filters, linking archive links on some sites (gawker and marysue if i remember correctly) became a bannable offense, and they churned out a handful of articles on how usage of archiving sites is unethical. All because of potential lost revenue.

Most higher ups just don't care. Their in their 50s and probably spent their youth punching hippies and working a bunch. Their hobbies are not going to be comics. It might be reading novels or watching brain dead films to relax from the 15 hours at the office and then play with their kids. And good businessmen don't just stick to 1 company. What's your point? Yeah, they published left leaning books in the past. The same company also published a fair amount of right leaning comic books.

They did a seven year series on Vietnam. One of their popular books was a war comic featuring Nick Fury. They published copious amount of Punisher comics.

One of their top Punisher writers is an open and unapologetic Republican. Another one of their top creators was an out-and-out Randian objectivist. Yet a third one of their top creators was a Libertarian who wrote a book in which he suggested JFK was possessed by Satan.

Nobody's arguing that Marvel was never political. People are arguing that Marvel was never political like this.

Every other book by Marvel now is pushing some progressive agenda. They've race swapped and gender flipped just about every big Marvel superhero there is. They've made a big deal about a new Avengers line up containing all these race and gender swapped characters. They publish poorly written and poorly illustrated comics by Tumblr creators. Books where Spider-Woman is now a strong and progressive single mother. Squirrel Girl is now a fat acceptance superhero. Hellcat is some kind of fag hag who doesn't fight crime. God knows that a comic featuring the Hulk as some transgender demisexual otherkin could only be around the corner.

Why do they do this? Because of some deeply held, deep rooted political beliefs? Fuck no. This exactly the same company being run by exactly the same people who, ten years ago, couldn't stop publishing the type of comic books their current target demographic of Tumblr Social Justice Warriors won't stop complaining about.

The only logical conclusion for such a radical paradigm is, 'for the money'.

Oldfag here, can confirm. I've been reading Marvel comics since the 70s, and while they've always tried to advance the theory that maybe blacks/gays/women/etc. are also human beings, I've never seen shit like this. The well of creativity has been poisoned by the SJW shit-wipes and their cronyism. This isn't politics, this is IDENTITY POLITICS, the same cancerous pap that is force-fed to kids in the universities. Usually kids have their "Ché" (or whatever) phase, then grow the fuck up, but not this time. This time we've got a bunch of spoiled faggots and dykes who don't actually HAVE to grow up, as their rich daddies keeps providing for them so they don't have to face the harsh realities of life.

This whole batch of fucks needs to be gassed.

I don't mind a comic having a political point, even one that I totally disagree with. My problem is when that point is made in the fashion of stopping time in the middle of a high speed chase to make a 4th wall breaking and out of character comment about a political agenda that has jack all to do with the story.

 No.547367

Idea for a one-shot comic - An everyman protagonist (Steve Rogers?) awakes in a Marvel universe five or so years from now, where every bad SJW-driven decision Marvel has made is taken to a logical extreme. He tours around this depressing nightmare, constantly shaking his head in disbelief at how things went so wrong, completely without the influence of any easily identifiable "supervillain"

Squirrel Girl is now a 400-lb hambeast that stalks around a college campus she's far too old for, picking fights with anyone thinner than she is.

Spider-Woman is still a single mom, but now has half a dozen multi-ethnic toddlers clinging to her legs even as she waddles into battle. She doesn't know who any of the fathers are.

Loki is now Thor; he explains that lifting Mjolnir was simply a matter of shaming Odin into lowering the bar for "worthiness" until it was set so ridiculously low that literally anyone could lift it. Any attempt to argue against his worthiness is met with post-modern deconstruction of worthiness as a social construct. And so Loki is now Thor, and chooses to dress in campy drag just to further spit on his brother's name and appeal to his fangirls.

That's all I got, but feel free to build on that. What would become of Spider-Man, Captain America, the X-Men?

1) What happened to Whor? Killed I assume?

2) Spider-Man - Peter Parker was killed and replaced by Miles Morales, who has become a tyrannical ruler of his own corner of New York City (Queens, perhaps?) owing to the fact that his venom blast and other extremely over-powered abilities make him virtually unstoppable, even by the other Avengers

Captain America - Well, since Steve Rogers is your protagonist we'll say he disappeared and was replaced by Captain Falcon, who proceeded to lead a #BlackLivesMatter chapter in New York City that, with his help, successfully managed to take over Manhattan and turn it into a modern day Uganda

The X-Men: America is over-run with them since anyone who has a problem with mutants is a mutantphobic, sexist shitlord (or some such) leading to the government, which has some mutant representatives owing to the mutant lobby, enacting an open border policy for 'refugee' mutants wishing to come into the country

Professor X: Killed himself because the rampant stupidity of the current Marvel Universe was just too much for his psychic mind to take

Wolverine: Became feral and lives almost exclusively in the woods since one of the mutant students told him to embrace his identity as a demisexual genderfluid mutant Wolverine-kin

Iceman: Runs a gay bar somewhere in #BLM occupied New York

 No.547576

>>547508

1) I would imagine Jane Foster clung to the hammer right up until her cancer killed her, while Loki was waiting in the wings to come scoop it right up before "Odinson" could rightfully reclaim it.

2) Honestly Miles Morales is just a symptom of a longstanding problem for Spidey - his own popularity, which has resulted in Marvel producing a never-ending parade of knock-offs from Venom to Ben Reilly to Scarlet Kaine to Spock and Miles, ultimately resulting in Spider-Island and Spider-verse. I would see Peter rendered helpless and immobile in a huge web-like system of tubes and medical equipment designed to continuously bleed him of his radioactive lifeblood, which Miles and a class of Spider-people use to maintain their powers and vampire-like existence.

3) I like the idea of the BlackLivesMatter, but think you could probably roll in Black Panther and Wakanda into it.

4) Mutants as immigrants is fine, though I'm not sure it makes sense since most mutants are born in America anyway, aren't they?

I would like to have a mutants as LGBT metaphor though; imagine that Mojo has been hired to run America's television networks, and has flooded the programming with pro-mutant shows that push deviant weirdness as the new normal. Cyclops and his harem of teenage Emma Frost clones star in a "Modern Family" type sitcom opposite his adult son Cable, who is dating a clone of his own mother. Meanwhile Beast is set to headline an all-furry remake of "Ghostbusters".

I like the Wolverine idea too, especially since it harkens back to his original origin story as a hyper-evolved feral Wolverine. Would be hilarious to see Logan wander into town naked and steal a steak off someone's plate at a restaurant, and when Steve calls him on it he's like "I'm storing fat for hibernation, shitlord! Winter's coming, check your human-privilege!"

Honestly? Not as bad as I thought it'd be.

Very visibly rushed, and very visibly not written for the medium it's in. By which I mean "short-length American monthly comics", not "comics". I think the premise's fine, and the writing's doing a decent job of conveying Jessica's confusion and learning and shattering of preconceived ideas regarding her new situation. But it's a format that needs a huge page number to work, to have space. Otherwise you either hyper-compress it, or like in here, feel ripped off you paid nearly 5 bucks for just a small segment of the story.

BASIC PLOT

PRELUDE

Steve Rogers is doing his thing being a hero when an accident renders him frozen in ice again, and the other heroes are too wrapped up in their own shit to remember to go rescue him. Time passes.

FIVE YEARS LATER

Steve is thawed out, and nursed back to health by (SUGGESTION NEEDED; Foggy Nelson? Ben Urich?) who drops exposition and acts as Steve's guide to what's been going on for the missing years.

Steve sets out into this world in search of his shield; he's been told there is a Captain America running New Wakanda (New York) and suspects that it is Sam Wilson. Cap sets out towards New York; when he gets there he finds it in a state of urban war between the Black Panthers and the Spider-Men.

Steve survives a skirmish between the two sides, his white skin and blonde hair marking him as an immediate target for the gun-toting Black Panthers. However as soon as Steve disarms them and gives one a wallop to the face, they fall to the ground shouting "Dindu nuffin!", and amazingly the Spider-Men instantly switch sides to protect their former enemies from Steve.

Steve flees, and finds shelter with an old friend; Jessica Drew. She is heavily pregnant and haggard looking, a swarm of spider-toddlers crawling on her legs and every wall and ceiling of her home. As she struggles to herd her many multi-ethnic children she talks to Steve about the multitude of Spider-man knockoffs roaming New Wakanda. She explains that they started out mostly as clones, kept from degenerating by regularly ingesting radioactive blood from the original Peter Parker, who is hooked up to a life-support system at the old Horizon Labs. As Jessica narrates to Steve, we get a glimpse of Peter's horrific new life, suspended in the middle of a "web" of tubing that continuously sucks blood from him. As he hangs there, we watch as one of the clones (this one a clone of Gwen Stacy, wearing the "Spider-Gwen" outfit) slinks along the "web" towards Peter, where she tells him she's hungry. Peter mumbles out "~I deserve this~!" as Gwen feeds on him like a vampire, and continues to apologize endlessly to Gwen even as she tortures him. When sated, Gwen leaves Peter there to suffer while and rejoins Miles Morales, who is busy having a sloppy makeout session with a spider-woman version of MJ Watson in front of Peter. (Background gag: Spider-woman version of Aunt May getting dicked by Spider-Ock?)

Jessica's story ends, Steve is clearly disgusted. He thanks her for giving him a chance to catch his breath, and she points him in the direction of Captain Falcon
