They've also slightly aged up and matured Ash over the years, and it'd be quite appropriate.
With the original canon pairings of Ash + Misty and James + Jessie being scrapped way back around Mewtwo Strikes Back, and nailed in the coffin once they brought along that awesome pirate hooker May, the better thing to default on really might be this Batman/Catwoman-esque Ash + Jessie thing.
