I never said that the characters of QC were competent. I could see them being the kind of people who care little enough about the sanctity of fingerboxes that they would just shit one out of a 3D printer. It'll get the job done for one or two uses but the materials are crappy and to be honest fingerboxes are only good after they've been broken in for about a month or so.

The smaller models do wear down kind of fast, but that's why you only use them in circumstances where a full-sized model would be too inconvenient. Also, you can get a full year or two of use out of them if you do the proper maintenance regularly. As you can see from the pic, I had them sitting on my workbench. You have to make sure that all the important components are well-lubricated and that nothing has come loose. They're a pain in the ass to keep up with, but it beats buying a new one every three months.

As for fingerboxes, I tried making one, myself, back in shop class when I was but a lad. It didn't turn out very well. Mr. Bishop got pissed off because he'd specifically warned us about using class time and materials to make one. I tried to explain that it wasn't the kind he was thinking of, but that just made him angrier. Ended up in the principal's office over that one. The good news is that the principal remembered what it was like to be a kid, and let me off with a warning. Off the record, he told me about his first attempt to make one from styrofoam chunks back in his misspent youth.
Anyway, I'm no fingerboxsmith. I ended up sending away for a digital one from Japan. I thought it was pretty cool, but when I showed my friends, they all called me a faggot for not having a wooden one like theirs.
