Now that the dust has settled, can we agree that MLP:FiM season 1 was far better than it had any right to be, but that's as much as the entire show has going for it?

 No.547189

I only watched half of the first season and I really didn't like it. If it's the best the show has to offer, then it speaks volumes of its quality.

 No.547211

I think seasons 2-6 are still obscenly bad and a complete mockery of quality worse than generation 1's season 2 with the slice of life anthro school bullshit. But they're severely underrated and ignored as possibly the worst after-seasons created in existence because there's no real mainstream popularity like The Simpsons to warrant criticism and mockery.

imo, it was a mediocre show that accidentally stumbled upon the harem formula and maybe even expounded on it.

>6 female characters that are easy to understand and embody something a lonely guy would want

>colorful accepting world where you don't have to be yourself

>everyone is special!

>no male leads moving on your waifu

It makes me interested to see what would happen if somebody actually knew what they were doing and made a cartoon specifically for the waifu audience.

Nobody has ever seriously argued that MLP:FIM was way better than it should have been.

I mean, lets face it. Going into 2010 was kind of a shit show for animation. Computers had been widely adopted, but rather than to strengthen and streamline animation it was used largely to push out shit as cheaply as possible. Standards were going down into the toilet.

I know of a couple people I would get together with and routinely mock the fact that the Care Bears and My Little Pony from the 80's wouldn't be allowed by some parents to be seen because they were 'to intense' for their children. The origonal My Little Pony being something more akin to Girls First Dungeons and Dragons campaign and The Care Bears movies dealing with a necronimicon stand in and satan.

A childrens cartoon SHOULD have been absolutely horrific at that point in time. So saccharine and lacking in anything redeeming aside from sound and lights to distract infants long enough for mom and dad to fuck that it should have been ignored and forgotten.

But it wasn't. It was a return to the High Fantasy setting Seriously, it's also pretty much the only High Fantasy setting show on television, the fuck is up with that? with more than 0 work put in to writing, world building, characters and production quality. Yes, even the animation was a massive upgrade compared to many of the shows around it at the time. Both in actual animation and choosing the right god damn design aesthetic to use with the new animation programs coming out at the time.

And I'm not saying it's so impossibly impressive. It's just that this little show actually had some god damn effort put into it. Yes, this show SHOULD be considered meh tier. But we aren't exactly rolling in an animated golden age.

And to be perfectly frank. This mega-hit little show has probably done more good for animation than a dozen commercial failure masterpiece shows.

> Seriously, it's also pretty much the only High Fantasy setting show on television, the fuck is up with that?

Animation is perfect for shit you can't do in live action, especially for tv, and you're right, mlp is practically the only high fantasy cartoon airing, even if it does include the kind of action I'd like.

I'd kill for a new DnD style western animated show. The 90's DnD cartoon was great at the time (as a kid) and while I can watch it fondly, it's just like Thundercats, Transformers, and GI Joe. Shit. So poorly animated and written.

I want an Avatar (not Korra) show but with traditional DnD/medieval setting, with mages and warriors and rogues and dragons and dungeons.

 No.547297

>>547295

I would kill for a Dragons Crown or Odins Sphere animated show.

Or, yeah, pretty much anything with actual fantasy and not Tolkien tier non-fantasy garbage.

 No.547302

>>547297

And yet, despite the successes of LotR or Harry Potter in film, and games like Skyrim being very successful with casuals, western animated tv rarely has anything with high fantasy in it.

Christ, I even started watching that shitty Shannara Chronicles MTV show for whatever dose of fantasy it gave, even if it's actually a weird post apocalypse show (don't watch it, it's awful).

And now I'm reminded of that one awesome sequence in the previous Looney Tunes show where Daffy has some kind of high fantasy fever dream, and it was fucking sweet, if only for a minute or two. I can't remember what episode it was in, and can't find it on youtube, but I remember thinking how great it would be to have a show like that one segment, even with anthropomorphic ducks.

Does Wakfu count? I haven't seen it.

I'm left wondering why we don't have more fantasy. It's a genre with lasting appeal, is it too expensive?

On the technical side, the Flash wasn't revolutionary but the artstyle was able to stand on its own.

>high fantasy

That's why I prefered the episode over the slice of life genre it ultimately chose for its show. But mostly because I prefer adventure than slice of life and also because it was something different for a normally tame girl's show. Which makes it kind of annoying when you see the fanboys literally thinking the show was the pinnacle of 2010 animation just because it wasn't dumb like the other MLP shows and because of some occasional fantasy elements. Maybe because I thought that its slice of life genre ultimately made it tame once more despite it having far more effort put into it unlike the past MLP shows. Overall, it's a chill show but way too overhyped. Maybe if they sticked with Faust's vision of the magical girl genre ponies then it would live up to it.

kek even when you're appeasing the anti pone fags which are about as cancerous as pone fags they're still buttblasted about seeing horses.

anyways no one wants to admit this show was actually bretty good for a solid two seasons, slumped in the third, and turned out okay for the fourth and fifth with some stand out episodes. it's good. it's got a good setting, decent characters and a nice heartwarming tone to it. nice simple character designs that are so easy, simple and good that they've spawned countless autistic ocs.

it's damn shame the huge cancer that it caused and completely destroyed any way to even talk about the fucking show. but it's still pretty alright all around.

I think that can't be stated enough. Most animated shows coming out that time were using flash as poorly as possible. Basically, shows like Johnny Test were fucking it up over and over. Then it was like some fucking spell being undone when the crew showed what proper style that works with the technology can do.

The show in general was never really good at all. It was actually pretty mediocre, even for a little girls cartoon.

People who say it is good are pretty much blinded from the illusion created by fanbase. They never liked the show for what it really was, but rather the community that creates tons of OC daily. If there was no fanbase to begin with then barely anyone would watch it besides its targeted demographic.

 No.547361

It was GREAT for a young childrens show. Had more characters, more pizzaz, and character development. But that makes it stand out as a 4-10 year old demographic show. Not as a teen or even adult show.

It just had a stupidly large fanbase for no reason.

I honestly want a reboot or at least a new MLP show that has the same level character writing of FiM but with more lore and less focus on aiming to the small demographics. Something like Wakfu or Dofus. And definitely add in more fantasy creatures other than equines like witches or trolls from the original G1.

As a children's show it is actually very anti-children. It has no adventures, no sincere honest characters, no ethics, no toys, no joy and wander, no children characters, no parental characters.

There's nothing about "try hard, be yourself, never lose hope, be a good person, be humble, be a responsible member of society" "enjoy life, play games, have fun, be responsible, don't be nobody's fool" etc. Most good children's cartoons I've watched always had those.

And that was back in season 1, before Lauren left, Mike Vogel took over and turned it into a blatantly hypocritical parody.

I guess it is just a shitty harem show with no real creativity put into it.

The writing "formula" for FIM is just 1 simple step: Give each character a memorable scene to stand out as an individual.

Without taking into account the story and how to advance it.

They prioritize the characters, but they do it poorly because the story has to suffer because of it. Hence Bridle Gossip is nothing but the ponies sitting still talking to eachother for two thirds of the episode before they finally confront Zecora.

The first 3 episodes. Maybe the 4th episode too. The episodes are sectioned into scenes which could play off into any order, there is no well stitched together narrative, they just grab whatever they can and stitch it together with no over arching plot to back it up.

It's the same type of scene, but another character doing what their archetype dictates them to do. There is no primary plot and secondary plot, no plot A which goes into plot B and descends into plot C. There is no consistency or dynamic execution. It's a rails-on story without any order.

 No.547848

>>547847

Ticket Master is about each character fantasizing about their dreams.

Mare In The Moon 1 & 2 is about each character eing presented and showing off their element.

Applebuck Season is about Applejack acting dumb and drunk for 4 recycled scenes with slight alterations, with each scene having Twilight confront her about it. It's boring and a very copy-pasted way of writing a one-off scene rather than a continous story.

There is no perspective from the villain's side, no attempt at world design, lore, extra ideas, landmarks, change of pace, etc.

The Everfree Forest instead of being a beautiful mystical and mysterious forest surrounded in darkness is nothing but a crappy old swamp jungle where a zigger lives.

Instead of the action taking place in Canterlot, it takes place in a boring redneck village called Ponyville, which attempted to be some sort of CandyLand village, but failed horribly.

Cloudsdale is even worse, it gets introduced in episode 16 and is never used again.

Basically MLP is devoid of ideas and what makes a fantasy show good.

It's more of a half-stitched babby's first DnD world made by an uncreative and lazy GM.
