Shinji is the kind of character that only "works" in context.
In context, Evangelion is a paint by numbers premise the Japanese had seen 100x times before about the world being in danger from monsters and a band of plucky teenagerd in robots who fight them. That the formula had become kind of stale and watered down means Shinji is the logical conclusion since he's a kind of shitty kid who can't take the pressure and buckles. Unlike Kouji Kabuto who rises to the occasion, and is basically the Ur Example of this kind of thing.
People got so used to copying that kind of character they forgot that it was initially assumed that the plucky teen needed secret training or a special power or to just be a crazy psycho to get in the damn robot to begin with. So a kid who has none of that being exposed to that kind of scenario is clearly absurd.
Which is what Evangelion forgot with Rebuild. Shinji rises to the occasion, but then gets slapped.down for no reason. Instead of characters hating him for character reasons it became about a bunch of bizarre shit, and not even bizarre in the way the series usually is.

The sad thing is, in any other story with a hero's journey, a sword like that would be the main hero's only and no one else's, often with some kind of mystic/technological theft-guard built in that wrecks anyone else trying to hold/use it. Also, the only person who'd even think of taking it from the hero would either be a dickhead rival character or a straight villain character, in which case any efforts to that end would result in either the aforementioned protective measures slapping their shit, or the hero/his friends kicking their ass.
In SU, however, the sword can just be used by whoever despite weird proportions, obvious affiliation with the gemstone and clear intention to be given to Steven only, because Rebecca's shitty self-insert absolutely must be the true hero of the show, either when fused or on her own if not both at once.

The antagonist will be ignored for a half dozen episodes about some other weird thing and then come back looking ridiculous and kill the tension even more. Information will be withheld like it's a big secret for no reason, dropped onto the audience like it's a huge bomb, then forgotten about immediately in an attempt to build suspense.

The thing about 80's and 90's anime is they could be clean and fun but have moments of being dirty to contrast them for the sake of a joke, or tension, or general excitement.

It has an arc about Tenchi going from a skilled but lazy teenaged swordsman into a space prince learning about cosmic demons 'n shit. Which is similar to SU but Tenchi did in 12 episodes what SU couldn't manage in 60 because the original story had a clear idea of where it wanted to go.
Sailor Moon was kind of formulaic at the time but it didn't actually shy away from escalating things permanently. New Sailors would join the team permanently, whereas crystal gems show up for one episode a season then disappear so the status quo can assert itself. The main character would become stronger and more experienced. Things HAPPENED.
Dragon Ball especially is the fucking ANTITHESES of SU because it combined both and actually pulled it off. The whole thing was about Goku getting stronger and making friends and it was able to cut the tension with physical humor and sex jokes to keep things light between fights. It may have a well earned reputation for going on way too long but at least it breaks them up by introducing new antagonists and then getting them over with to move on instead of masturbating over one villain forever.

The only information witheld from the viewer is about the gems past, which is all revealed to the audience as it is revealed to Steven, since the show is entirely from Steven's POV, and it always affects how the gems interact or the way the viewer understand their relationships

Quite the opposite considering most changes to the status quo have long term consequences for all of the characters involved. Of course there's the obvious things like characters being added into the cast.

Couldn't stand him for many episodes myself and I kept asking why the gems actually let him do shit. Also episodes are so fucking short that they can't even fit in the shit they want to achieve. It's probably the biggest problem with the entire show. Every episode feels like a fucking highlight real instead of the actual episode. There is no pacing because they just have to get through shit as fast as fucking possible.

I'd say this why the show has such a bad pacing problem. It screams to have half-hour episodes, but because CN or whoever doesn't want that kind of programming, they can't naturally evolve these characters.
The inherent flaw is that they want to have their cake and eat it too. They want the story-telling shit, but they also want the wacky, zany slice of life stuff, but only one really works in 11 minute episodes, and the other will suffer at 22 minutes. If they focused exclusively on something like story-progression with the odd bit of comedy one offs, you'd get a more well-structured show.
That would probably make a better show overall, because they'd be allowed to explore things a more natural pace.

the message is mostly ok in my eyes, unlike actual SJWs i havent seen men or white people demonized in the show, hell, this is probably the show with the best father figure ive seen in recent years, thats actually very pro-men, ive lost count of how many homer simpsons we see in cartoons these days, the stupid, fat, barely caring stereotype, its actually refreshing to see a father that is talented, wise and ACTUALLY CARES FOR HIS SON. the love shit, i think its mostly well implemented into the show, honestly the only uncomfortable shit ive seen is the whole stevonnie thing, but i think they are going somewhere with that so ill let it slide, garnet couldve been an ok super sand lesbiand, if they hadnt totally ruined her character by turning her into GAY: THE CHARACTER

the show itself is pretty good, im a sucker for good characters to the point i usually cant enjoy a show if i cannot sympathize with the characters or i dont find them interesting, this is the main reason why i dont mind the slow pace of the show, cuz i still get to see more character development/interaction, the plot itself is pretty nice, lots of foreshadowing and interesting twists, the pacing is pretty bad, sure most of the stuff in the "filler" episodes gets referenced in the future, but the plot still advances at a snail pace, the animation is also only decent, serviceable but by no means impressive, the backgrounds are nice but thats it

the only previous works of sucrose that im familiar with are her "dont cry for me, im already dead" comic (which was pretty funny) and the episodes she directed of adventure time, which were some of the best episodes of AT back in the day, before the show went to shit

Steven, despite being a fairly curious precocious child never asks anything about the gems in any meaningful capacity, he's just content to be ignorant until an invasion starts or serious shit goes down and the crystal gems realize it's about time they tell him.
