/col/ Rules & Meta Discussion

Welcome to /col/, the 8ch settlement board! This board is for discussing all sorts of efforts to create 8chan-related communities in physical space.

"Let's all just move to our own house/compound/farm/commune/town/city/nation!" has always been a popular topic both here and on halfchan. However, a lot of these efforts quickly die out, fade into irrelevance, and repeat the same simple errors over and over. I bet all of you fags who are into this shit are the same people anyway, so we might as well have a single place for these things where we can learn from past mistakes.

Rules:

1. One official thread per project. You can have as many unofficial ones as you like.

2. Don't fuck with other projects.

3. Do not advocate illegal activity. (I mean things like moving to a farm and making drugs, not the complicated problem of sovereignty itself)

4. General discussion threads about matters relevant to more than one project are fine. (such as financing strategies, power generation, international law)

5. Meta discussion can go in this thread.

>what are official threads

In official threads, constructive criticism is encouraged, and I will delete negative comments like "this will never work, you're all retarded". Official threads must have the word "official" somewhere in the subject.

Everywhere else, anything goes.

/pol/ gentrifies a neighborhood

The following thread was made on /pol/ (>>/pol/3729887):

>Hey /pol/ what if we got together and gentrified a Neighborhood? Anons with money could buy houses anons that can’t afford a house could rent rooms from them.

>We should pick a state with low taxes and decent gun laws (wouldn’t want to live in a shitty neighborhood with no protection). We should pick a city with cheap property, a low cost of livng, at least one accredited university and trade school as many anons are attending or plan to attend higher education.

A few people expressed interest. I'll make this thread as a semi-permanent archive of any progress made.

Open Source Ecology thread.

(Because the drive for colonies is proletarians wanting the MEANS OF PRODUCTION for SELF-ACTUALIZATION, fuckers.)

So what the fuck happened with this, /col/onels? It seems like all progress ground to a halt years ago. I'm still subscribed to their channel and they put out the stupidest fucking unedited clusterfuck videos from time to time.

I think Marcin must be dealing with some SocJus bullshit inside his little commune because I've seen nothing new out of these guys in the past 5 fucking years other than finishing the CEB press and declaring it a failure since it doesn't outperform a manual press.

It would have been faster if he had just told everyone to fuck off once he got his grant money and then just did everything himself like he had been doing successfully.

So, what if these guys fail, lose their grants, and disband?

All colonies desperately need an open source hardware set that can be created from raw materials. The whole world needs this shit.

Micronations

What previous attempts to found micronations do you know, and how far did they get?

Innawood Project

Thread for discussion of the Innawood project to form a corporate town in a rural part of the state of Maine: http://innawood.org/Properties/

IRC: irc.freenode.net #innawood

Innawood would focus on building a self-sufficient community without giving up modern technology and would collaborate for trade with the outside world while abiding by national and state laws. With a population of approximately 5,000 - 10,000 a legal township could be established with a town hall, courthouse and local emergency services. Land in the area is cheap, building codes are non-existent outside of close proximity to waterways and the land contains all 3 geological mineral types while being set several hours from the nearest population center.

Currently there are about 60 people signed up with a goal of at least 1,000 before beginning to pool pledged funds to buy land and equipment.

I don't know if this is very /colony/ related but why don't we just put our money together, buy some land our houses and rent them out cheap to others sharing our cause. This way we would be earning more money to buy more land, and keep expanding.

Next /pol/ target: Greenland

So, there's now a new /pol/ nation attempt: Greenland.

A thread was created on 4/11/2015: http://8ch.net/pol/res/1708114.html

Having looked through the threads on /greenland/, I'm guessing the board was created on 3/21/2015.

Interestingly, it seems Greenland isn't quite a forgotten backwater nobody wants: http://www.mining.com/greenland-embraces-mining-rush-but-wont-favour-one-country-alone-prime-minister-43629/

/namibia/

Whatever happened to this project?

The board seems dead, with 2 active IPs as of now. Last I heard a Latvian was starting an NGO to do it, but then they got found out: http://www.vice.com/read/white-colony-in-namibia-773

New Minerva Project

This is the Official NeMP Thread. The Stipendist Seasteading and Island-Building Project!

Introduction and Index
https://docs.google.com/document/d/1Y-9IklYRUDN8TDSR5gURSCqzt9w9bBkBUhMzBRBpqGo/edit?usp=sharing

Immediate Project Requests:
-Cool Flag Art, OP images, & NeMP themed /col/ banners!

-Ideas and contributions to The Minervan Junk subproject.

-Materials Engineer expertise on hull composite materials. My plan is to make a LOT of silicon carbide as a form of insitu resource utilization. When looking up materials and alloys for boats I noticed silicon carbide is also of around the same mass and density as aluminum, and is supposedly very chemically inert. Could a boat hull be made from silicon carbide entirely or in composite with other materials in your opinion? Why or why not?

-Someone with a good radio voice to do an introductionary video to the NeMP.

-More traffic to /col/, passively mention it on your favorite board, get friends involved in the NeMP, etc.

Energy

How do we get power?
I think a LFTR would be a great source of energy later down the road but how do we start initially?

Guys there is already a plan to colonize a place. You don't need a passport to move there it is called the Northwest Imperative. WA also has no state income tax on individuals and none of the states in the Northwest have assault weapons bans.

Is it possible to escape from WW3?

So /pol/ recently stickied an interesting essay. I will reproduce this essay in below posts for convenience.

This brings up an interesting question for us /col/onists, though. If WW3 does indeed break out, is it possible to save yourself by holing up in a remote enclave?

There are two main problems: First is the usual chaos associated with war (or civil war) in large population centers. Any major city of strategically relevant nations may potentially be a very dangerous place to be: Consider the example of Paris, Berlin, Dresden, Stalingrad and many others during WW2. Note how it is not necessary for the city to actually be conquered - just starving in a besieged city and being reduced to eating rats, or the civil unrest brought about by the chaos of war, can be bad enough to a disinterested citizen.

The second problem is novel. There is a possibility of nuclear war. Traditionally, it was assumed that due to MAD, any nuclear war will escalate into complete destruction. But this need not be so - one can imagine for instance a scenario where one or two cities on either side are nuked, and then one nation surrenders due to intense public resistance to continuing the war. Regardless, if a nuclear exchange does occur, one must also consider the danger of nuclear fallout. It is not sufficient to merely live in a sparsely populated area, you must also be far, far away from major cities or strategic targets (such as missile silos or military bases).

In WW2, for instance, citizens of Switzerland were mainly safe from problem #1. However, they would not be safe from problem #2: If any part of Europe (or even Russia) is nuked, the fallout will surely reach Switzerland as well. On the other hand, South America and Sub-Saharan Africa appear likely to be spared the brunt of a (hypothetical) WW3.

Would Namibia be safe, given its lack of strategic value and geopolitical relevance? What about the Pacific Northwest? What areas of the world strike a desirable balance between being safe from a near future world war, and not being shitholes to live in (eg. South Africa) until that comes?
