All right, I have high hopes for this board. Hopefully it won't die and fade into the realms of obscurity.

I was thinking that we should make a constitution for the theoretical nation that would be created if the southern states would secede. In the thread we would decide the rights of the people and the states, as well as what powers/laws the government should have. Every week I will write up a new constitution and we can vote on if it is satisfactory or if it needs changes and continue to discuss it, but only if there is enough input and support for it. We can also discuss minor details like what the new Confederacy would be called. I hope this can be something fun this board can do and won't just die as soon as I post this.

I like that idea. I vote the original articles of confederation + the bill of rights

Thanks for responding. Hopefully this board becomes more active.I think the Articles of Confederation are too weak. I don't think the states should be able to go to war with each other and the Federal Government should be responsible for treaties and interstate trade disputes. I was thinking we have a similiar government to what we have now, only with some limits: anything not explicitly said in the constitution cannot be done without a constitutional amendment. The executive branch would be weaker. If the majority of state legislatures vote to do so, they may repeal any federal law. If 2/3s of state legislatures do not like the president they may vote him out of office. The federal government would not be allowed to make laws that discriminate by state. Politicians of the federal government would also not be able to raise their paychecks without voter approval. Bill of rights is a no brainer, but I think we should add some passages that clearly state a right to privacy.

We should get some alternative voting in here so that we don't get the broken First Past the Post crap we have today.

The Confederacy should have Alternative Voting instead of the broken First Past the Post crap.

Agreed. First past the post is broken and needs to go. I also think we should sort voting districts by computer algorithms to prevent bias. We should also do away with the electoral college.

You could allow one house member per county and one or two senate members per state, but certain states (like my state of GA) will have an advantage because I think we have more counties than any state other than Texas.

Or maybe one house member per 50k people or something. Counties with 50k or more could vote on mutliple house members and 2-3 close counties with less than 50k might share a voting district

Eh, I think voting districts should be seperate from counties. I agree that one house member should represent 50 thousand people though. If there is any part of the population leftover and they are above 10,000 people in size, then they get their own representative. If less they are joined with a voting district closeby and with similiar interests. Also wondering if we should split texas into 4 or 5 states so it doesn't have an unfair advantage when it comes to federal representation compared to the other states.

Sorry I'm late with the draft. I felt like there weren't enough people for it to feel like its worth making the constitution. I decided to to just make it and see if more people join the discussion. I was also in Austin on vacation so I didn't have time to do it until recently. Here's the pastebin: http://pastebin.com/49GaQYx4

Since I didn't get a lot of input I decided to add a bunch of ideas of my own to the thing.

Please let me know about any spelling errors, passages that can be written more elegantly, forgot to write something mentioned here, etc.

When you wanna discuss a certain part of it, please note which article and which section it is so that everyone know what you're talking about and is on the same page

Some questions for further discussion:

Should the president have line-item veto?

Should welfare be entirely abolished on the federal level or should it exist in some limited form?

When should congress convene?

Should there be universal suffrage?

I will have a strawpoll up later to determine the name of the Confederacy.

Now I'm a northernet… But even I see the flaw here. Isn't the confederacy supposed to be for independence and states' rights?
>Section VII- Any time state law conflicts with federal law, federal law overrides state law.
I think there is a problem.

I'd definitely say only the Bill of Rights and anything else is left unto the states. The only addition I'd add it something like Rome had, where if shit goes bad, there's a "Tyrant" appointed until the calamity dies down. To have one appointed, there must be concrete goals agreed upon by the Congress and attempting to maintain power by not solving the crisis or redefining it is treason.
