I think part of the reason AVGN has endured is partly because James made a point to venture out into other types of videos and by large, managed to get fans to basically accept AVGN is a persona.

With Spoony and a lot of other folks, there is no real separation between persona so it all blurs into each other and that creates an unhealthy situation.

Probably help that AVGN is so utterly over the top, that it's impossible to take it seriously as James' true persona. That and the fact that he's also kept his inner circle pretty small, meaning there is less drama going on like with Channel Awesome.

Here's the rundown.

God, I used to watch his shit religiously back from 2008 to 2011. I was even willing to stick to him through his various breakdowns and self implosions and the like, even thought his Ultima retrospective was great, even though the last part of it was a bit tainted by him letting his personal issues seep through too much. Shit, I even liked his first few Counter Monkey videos, before they just devolved in to him basically just expositing his opinions on rulebooks, because the guy was good at spinning a yarn about his DnD days. Then I kinda drifted away from him as his schedule became more sporadic and I began gravitating more to other stuff like RedLetterMedia. So a year or so goes by, and I learn that he decided to do a FFXIII review, so I thought what the hell, might as well watch it for old times sake. Jesus Christ it was awful. Like, the whole first video just consisted entirely of him nit-picking pointless shit or making shitty jokes, it was fucking painful to watch.

I always wondered how someone like Spoony can make a living doing basically nothing. It has been over ten months since his last actual review and yet this fucker is getting 2,500$ in hipster welfare (also known as Patreon).

But this video explains it all. His fans are the biggest spergs, as long as you keep dangling keys in front of their faces they will laugh on cue and throw money at him. There is nothing funny or cringeworthy in the book and Spoony isn't making it funny either, but they still laugh at it because "lol bible". I watched the v-log he did on it years and years ago (Or it might've been a blog post, can't remember). It was something to do with his heart literally pumping too hard when his heart rate gets too high, which leads to circulation problems, which leads to fainting spells.
