I have never heard of the drama with Walky and Trannyformars. The most I hear of this cocksuck is in LOL threads where the Jojo edits of his prettyboy batman or his butthurt Gamergate comic invitably get turned into another loss edit. I doubt the sperging about him will be as bad as Dobson since he isn't as mainstream, and he is a pretty consistently triggered individual who responds to any troll he gets. Many of them have weird sexual fetishes centring around various characters from the franchise and produce horrifying pornographic cocks to satiate their desires. An astonishing number of them are legitimately autistic, sometimes horrifyingly so. Generally they're hugely unpleasant people to be part of a community with, online or otherwise, especially if you dissent from the accepted groupthink. TF forums tend to be awful places full of power-crazed moderators, trannies, religious fanatics, scammers, Chris-Chan level autists, etc.
The interesting thing is that the median age of TF collectors seems to be about ten years higher or more than, say, the Megaman, Sonic or MLP fandoms so these people are slightly more ashamed of sharing their sexual robot fantasies and autistic behaviour for all the world to see, which is probably why /cow/ has never really delved into their communities very far. I've noticed this is changing as younger blood used to plastering their horrifying OC over places like DeviantArt are coming to the fore, but it's been this way since the early 2000's and earlier - it's just nobody was really around to observe and report. The very first time I came across an insane tranny on the internet was a TF forum circa 2003, might have been TFcollectors (pretty sure it's dead now).

I don't get it, even slightly. Yes, there is a lot of strange stuff shaking up the 'sentient robot' formula in the Japanese continuations of the franchise, but that's really part of the charm as far as I'm concerned. At least there's some kind of internal logic, unlike the G1 cartoon.

It's really a mixed bag when it comes to that. You would have to work your ass off at every moment to catch up to the standard college student with a HSD. You'd probably have to start your basics at a nearby Community before transferring into a University, just to have a few credits to prove you can get stuff done, and the grades would have to be spectacular. Even then, you'd have to settle for a broad University that just so happens to have your field of science that you're interested in. It would be very unlikely that you'd get into a specialized University of sciences.
All in all, it wouldn't be implausible for someone to make it, but, there's two problems that make it laughable in this case:
1) Money. Realistically, science programs are goddamn expensive at universities, at least, here in Burgerland. I'll not go into the politics of it but rest assured there's a giant fucking bill waiting at the beginning of every semester and outside of scholarships and student loans, Becky wouldn't be able to scrape up enough for a year, much less the eight to ten-ish years it'd take her. And scholarships aren't really a viable option for her, because there's thousands of other students competing for that, dozens of those who probably have a background in studying exclusively for their dream job (I'm talking the Straight A's srs bsns students here), who are much more likely to earn that scholarship than someone starting from the bottom (Becky).
The second problem would be portraying someone realistically struggling and working their way up to that level of university, as that requires dedication and effort. Willis's history of comics shows he really lacks both, and there's no way he'll be able to write this story out without handwaving as 'she believed in herself so hard she became an overnight genius!'
