If you can do this for free, and game engines such as CRYengine 3 aren't expensive and just ask for a small cut, then where is this money going? The rest can be imported from gimp and blender amongst others. It no longer takes millions of dollars to make a game. That's why indie games keep popping up. Most of them not costing an arm and a leg.

From how I heard it all, back when Roberts made his first space game, Smart was working with him on it, but they fell out and Smart left to make his own space game. Roberts was successful and Smart wasn't.

Smart's just been holding a grudge and has been extremely bitter about everything since the mid 80's, and since he is claiming to have been involved in the Escapist's article, RSI initiated a lawsuit for libel.

The Escapist is denying that Smart was a source on the articles, but he's claiming he was because it will probably be as close as to saying "take that" to Roberts, considering that Smart failed to get a license for Freespace while Roberts managed to raise 90 million dollars on pixel shit and crow-funding.

Even then it can still definitely take millions of dollars to make a game that's above indie pixelshit and "johnny's kool new unity game" tier, considering engine licensing has to combine with employee salaries, middleware licensing, paying for art assets and/or people to make art assets(including sound and music), voice actors, etc. You're right in that it doesn't cost as much as most AAA companies (who are dumping most of their cash into marketing and maybe getting some big name celebrities to voice a couple lines or do some dumb shit commercial rather than on actual development) are paying and at the most technical level, you can make a game without breaking the bank.

That's real cheap, and no royalties. Top that off with free voice acting by college students who want their name attached and using blender and gimp, and all you have to pay for is the artist who actually designed the game, which could feasibly be pooled from some college.

Ever seen the Elephants Dream? It's aging but the budget for it was a mere €120,000 and it could be feasible to make it for half the price now. Most of that money went into post production. Sure, it's just a short film, but you don't even expect a game to be that polished. Not yet. Plus they even released a special edition 3d version of it. Very cool.
