I'm using Game Maker to create a metroidvania, and got most of my instructions for GML from youtube videos. I kinda have an idea what you mean by reused code, I set a variable to make the background turn black whenever I enter a building. It helped remove plenty of lines of code.

The switch statements have been immensely helpful so far. I used to duplicate the objects for room transitions and map detection, until after I saw another dev's metroidvania map tutorial and learned how room creation codes work and how versatile variable ids and the switch code are.

Still, I suppose OOP tutorials would be useful in the long term. Thanks for the tip.

From interviews, the idea behind the game is to inspire creativity in level design. From that perspective, I think the game succeeds. It's not gonna get people into game design on a deep level, at least not initially.
