Honestly Mstk3k was hit and miss for the most part. No one will deny that the pilot and first seasons sucked, and even with the right people it took them a long time to make it work. People who prefer Joel over Mike are nostalgia fags because a lot of the shorts/segments from Joel were pretentious and unfunny (basically Joel saying, "Hey guys I'm so smart because I read books! Take that bullies!"). Joel is kinda like Aaron Diaz, but likable (well…sort of likable now).

Rifftrax always sucked to me though. There's no charm in it like there was in mst3k because you at least you had fictional robots and a guy sit through the movie; it's more like having three fat old men bitching and making shitty comments in a theater. The weird thing is they make fun of good or watchable movies like Dark Knight, making the riffs look even more nauseating (not to say Dark Knight can't be riffed, but riffing only works when you're watching something really bad like Food Fight. If you've seen the show that "inspired" Rifftrax, you would want to slap everybody involved including Mike because it was unwatchable. I saw some clips from Cinema Titanic, and they're actually funnier than Rifftrax.

Other interesting (note: autistic) facts: Mike was in a Kickstarter game made by Doug Tennaple of Neverhood/Ejw fame (or infamy at this point). When MST3K began, they used a combination of public domain movies and old b-movies owned by people who were just happy someone wanted to put their films on the air.

NO ONE thought SNL would be a huge hit in the first couple of years of it's existence. To the point that in the KTM seasons, Joel and company even snuck in a bunch of films for illegal airing as far as not getting the rights to them (hence one of the main reasons why the KTM seasons are persona non-grata).

Anyhow, it was around season four that rights holders started to realize that MST3K was a big deal and people were watching it and started demanding more money. And to the eternal regret of the fanbase, it was around this time that a lot of the contracts for a lot of the movies, expired and had to be renewed by the show.

In the case of Sandy Frank (who's episodes were amongst the most beloved during season three), Frank quickly realized he had the upper hand when Joel and the group came calling to renew the rights to the various Sandy Frank films. Frank demanded huge amounts of money to let the show continue to use his movies. That is why the Frank films (including Time of the Ape) became "lost" episodes, in so far as the fact that the show could not afford to pay Frank the amount of money he was demanding and why they spread the smear campaign (saying Frank got pissy that they made fun of him in song) to distract fans from the dirty secret that made so many episodes become "lost episodes" that could never be aired again.

Similarly, years later on Sci-Fi, they had a different problem: Sci-Fi basically told them, point blank, they could only make use of films from the Universal film catalog. This was so that the network could slash the show's budget by eliminating the need to buy film rights, but rendered huge chunks of the last three seasons lost when it came time to release episodes on DVD, as Universal felt letting Rhino/Shout do DVD releases of their films, would cannibalize their ability to sell said films on DVD on their own.

And if MST3K is coming back? You just fucking know that, unless they go the public domain route (which probably will not be an option if they want a TV deal these days), any film studio they approach is going to GOUGE GOUGE GOUGE them price wise. ESPECIALLY if Shout is going to be smart and also looking at the long game (which Mallon never did) by way of wanting to lock down the digital and DVD release rights for any NuMST3K episode so that they can be released to DVD or digital download without having to haggle rights-wise after the fact.

So they are going to have to pay out the ass to get the movie rights, since no one is going to let them do it for free since they know MST3K is a big deal and more so, going to double gouge MST3K for the online/DVD rights since they know that Shout's going to release the new episodes that way too.

Well the problem with riffing on the original star wars is that there were some authentically funny goofs left in the film but what made up for them was the soundtrack, timing and proper use of silence. Back then Lucas even had a sense of humor and threw in the Wilhelm scream at just the right moment. It would be easier to make a drinking game out of star wars than to riff on it. Mst3k thrived off the bad pacing of the works they were making fun of. I bet the riff tracks for Gravity are pure gold. So much awkward silence. That movie was entirely too long. Star wars didn't have that problem. Well the original didn't. The newest one has some pacing issues which they appear to have attemted to fix in post with editing. That's why it gets real difficult to tell how far away from the ship they are supposed to be at one point and other goofy. The directors edition is bound to be hilariously riffable.

There is a reason why they didn't do a lot of Shaw Brothers movies or other low budget fast paced movies in mst3k. The entire concept seems to rely on bad or slow pacing. You can't just talk over the characters and actually compelling scenes. It's just annoying.
