Spoony at least (once) had a talent for pointing out what was wrong with what he reviewed beyond "it's stupid/poorly done". Or even when he did that, he went into sligtly more in-depth albeit hilarious explanations. I think the last time I recall him doing that properly, once he's in his full shit Spoony era, is during the FF13 review where he explain WHY the 'hallway' is so bad. It's not any genius insight, but he at least extrapolate on why it is shitty game design.

As you pointed out; over time, Doug forgot what these kind of videos are about however sometimes you cannot fault him for that part (one can fault him for his overblown ego and dementia, however): I vaguely recall him thinking that the only reason people watched his vids was for him to sperg out to bad movies. Might just be me but the top 'peak' of CA was, iirc, their last major anniversary To Boldly Flee however I suppose their drama and infighting began as early as Suburban Knight or even Kickassia. It was during those years they were at the 'top of their game' and popularity…but also when their egos spiralled out of control, or at least began to spiral into that mess we see today. I know To Boldly Flee is around the time Spoony's drama about the basement tweet hapenned. Not to mention Doug was planning to retire the Nostalgia Critic at the end of that movie.

And he did. But Demo Reel was a flop of epic proportions and he brought NC back and that's when the downward spiral was in full swing. Eberron was a new setting designed for 3.5 in mind and while it certainly got plenty of support in that era and the rule material for it were 100% compatible with other settings or your own at no point was it ever pushed as the default setting for D&D 3rd edition.

At best, Spoony got this confused because Monster Manual III, a core book, had Eberron cocks heavily featured albeit written in a way to use those monsters in a generic setting and races introduced in Eberron became player options in 3e and 4e independant on the setting.

Looking back and rewatching reviews he made, it was clear I just was immature and liked the things Doug pointed out. It's definitely worth a read. Greg Sestero (oh hi Mark!) is trying a little hard to shill himself, even though he really doesn't seem to be that good an actor, but it's still pretty damn cool. Turns out Wiseau is americanophile as fuck, probably has some kind of brain damage (he was in a car accident, but refused to go into the details of it), was tortured by the police while he was in France and now he's rich as fuck. He paid the entire movie by himself, and he didn't exactly do a good job of holding the costs down (or not pissing every actor that ever worked with him off). At one point, Sestero and him walk into some tall building with the american flag on top of it, and some architect comes over to Wiseau and tells him he'll be late with his rent payments this time. Oh, and he can do an Iron Cross. The book is strangely inspiring, at times.

Power Rangers is, in itself, a cost-saving measure. Factor into that the fact many of these actors have moved on and don't feel like coming back. Some are even retired from acting. THEN you gotta factor in that it at some point switched to New Zealand for production and it went to Disney then BACK to Saban.

It would be a total clusterfuck to get the actors back, the proper sentai suit backs, fly the actors and film the new footage.

There was a certain goofy charm, especially to the earlier seasons which used decently choreographed fights, where the rangers out of suit actors fought the monsters and footsoldiers. The show didn't take itself seriously at all and was willing to make something almost completely new with the sentai footage. Hell, season 2 and 3 of the original serie contained entirely new footage, where they use monsters and robots from 2-3 other sentai but the suit from Zyuranger, the Sentai from which the classic suits came from. There is definately a very fun factor to watching this sort of shit as an adult if that is what you are into.

The problem is that, like you said, you got Linkara trying to dissect this shit with a level of care and detail that just was never there. He doesn't watch it for the fun-yet-dopey action sequences, the nostalgia or the one-off episode that is quite funny. He watch it as if its somekind of serious serie with deep lore.

Except there is no lore or continuity. Well, there WAS some vague contuinity from MMPR to Lost Galaxy but beyond that not really. Even then, the continuity was never really that coherent (or important!) in those seasons. Its just a serie that exist as a setup for brightly colored superheroes to karate chop rubber suit monsters.

One thing I will entirely concede Linkara is right, however, is that the serie relies way too fucking much on CGI and there aren't enough unmorphed fight scenes. What he fail to understand, however, on this fact is that back then casted real martists and stuntmen. Nowadays they just cast regular people. I imagine that martial artist actors are pretty rare after the '90.

I worked on a no-budget film with an all-local cast and crew so no housing costs, everybody drove themselves to and from locations, the camera guy was from a local public access working gratis, and we ate at fucking fast food restaurants and paid for our own shit. Most of the money was spent to shoot on film so the movie didn't look like total shit. The movie still sucked, but you cut costs wherever you can when you're at that level. Lewis is planning like he's working with some massive studio budget.
