Well, most of my time was playing alone around 375 hours or so. But what made me left back in the day is how updates bloated the client more and more, until the point it was unplayable with the same PC I had when I started playing back when Valve did that beta for preorders.
Admitedly the PC was a Cheapotastic9001 (a 50 bucks AMD CPU and a 80 bucks ATI GPU) Then discovered the joys of having friends to play with, and getting back after properly upgrading my PC was not the same anymore. Between really bad pubs and not playing with someone I know even a bit, killed it most of the enjoyment playing alone.

I think that's part of why TF2 is dead to me now, things not being the same. When I was into it I was a different person. I was years younger, things were very different. I used to play with people I met on a Transformers message board, they were some of my best internet friends I've ever had. We'd play regularly each weekend on our own private server, going on for hours just having a blast. And when we weren't, I still enjoyed playing on other servers. While I wanted to be good at the game, I enjoyed goofing off too, skill wasn't a big deal to me. I was even an autistic brony back then and would play on pony servers for fun. It was all a much more innocent and fun time, but the more I grew up, the more things changed, the less I played, the less fun I had, and the more I grew apart from that close circle of friends I once had. It's a depressing though, but to this day some of them still play. I'd drop in on them, but nobody cares when I show up anymore except for a couple of the oldies.

Giving it another try won't hurt. Could be that TF2 was not the game that allowed you to disconnect your mind from your problems IRL and that was what made it not fun for you or simply it could not be your game. If you give it another try however don't judge it based on unbalanced pub games (easy to come across), and avoid playing on instant respawn servers at the beginning.
Pub games that you either stomp or get stomped are incredibly frustrating, they don't pose any challenge (at least from personal experience) and instant respawn servers unbalance things a bit since people stops caring about dying or not. That is huge since people stops trying to work as a team when pushing down objectives. From time to time they are fun IMO, just mindlessly charging to the enemy can be entertaining, but find more enjoyable the default ones with wave respawn times.

That's the thing, it is easy to lose map control if there is a constant stream of people due to intant respawning while people not working as a team. You hardly get a breathe to recover after getting hit. And glad I helped!

Well first off making a profile costs a small bit of money so you should be prepared to buy backgrounds, emotes, and badges. You can find galleries that display all the steam items pretty easily. Now with that covered your profile should look cohesive and neat, not too busy, if there's any wording make sure you use good formatting and do not stuff your page with useless info, rules, memes etc. Finding and sticking to a theme helps for making a good profile and having at least one showcase lets you customize it to make it unique, but overfilling it with many showcases is too much. Simple and boring aren't synonymous - sometimes using just a couple things can tie a profile together so it looks nice.
What I like to do is find a color and use that as my theme - avatar, screenshots, emoticons and all generally need to be the same color or something within that range, but if you think of a creative theme that works then by all means go for it, and have fun!
