I just finished watching this show called Kaiba. It's a short and unusual anime with one of its main themes being how the advancement of technology has effected peoples lives in a negative way. In this world they don't have computers, hackers, large corporations, or urban cities, but instead they have figured out how store their memories in an external device. People can swap bodies to live forever, download good memories, and delete bad memories, but of course this is a luxury only afforded by the rich, and there is a whole lot of corruption. In general, each episode of this deals with how someone's life has been ruined by this new technology in a different way.

This show doesn't have any of the usual components of cyberpunk, so I'm not sure if it should be called that, but it is definitely science fiction, and it does definitely deal with the the lowlife/punk side of things. I wonder what /cyber/ thinks of it, I'd definitely recommend giving it a watch.

I haven't watched an anime since 2008, and I was already tired of it back then.

 No.20364

If it wasn't anime I'd watch it

 No.20366

Sounds pretty cool, and seems to have an interesting art style. I'll give it a watch.

Without anime there'd be no ghost in the shell.
>mfw two plebs dissmiss an entire medium based on a small number of experiences.
Also anime is quite important to Cyberpunk as a genre, many of it's defining works were anime.

ive actually watched it twice, and its really fucking good, its asthetic and premise are fresh and unique and the art style is extremely reminiscent of osamu tezuka. its not too long either so its worth the watch, but its really fucking depressing and gets really emotional at times, and tends to be pretty confusing in a good way, if thats possible

I just have yet to see an anime art style that looks good

I find that very unlikely. Either you've only seen one or two anime or you biased against anything animated at all.

Regardless it is very much possible to enjoy something without 100% liking it's visuals.

Television is a medium; anime is an art form.

Err… Not that guy, but television is a technology, unless you're referring specifically to it's broadcast, in which I'd say it's a service.

Anime, or lets call it what it really is: Animation, Is a fucking artistic medium, not an art style. You cannot claim that it's a specific style when shit varies wildly from piece to piece (for example compare Akira to Kaiba to Madoka, etc )

 No.20447

>The word medium is defined as "one of the means or channels of general communication, information, or entertainment in society, as newspapers, radio, or television."

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Media_%28communication%29

And are you seriously claiming that most anime doesn't tend to look the same? For example, while it's true that Akira looks different from Madoka, you have to consider that there are 23 years between them, during which the style has changed. Even so, you can still tell that it's anime and not Western animation.

love the series.

yup i agree w/ the lowlife/punk side of things - a Prince (Wrap/Kaiba) gets a taste of the lives and struggles of normal people.

 No.21793

>>20447

Although it's true that most mainstream anime tend to look basically the same, the fact that anime is an artistic medium can make for some incredibly unique and stunning visuals.

>The creator of "Kaiba", Masaaki Yuasa, is especially known for has crazy art style. You should check out more of his works.

I love Kaiba, it's my favorite anime after End of Evangelion and Serial Experiments Lain.

I should watch that series and this thread feeded my interest in it even more.

If English is your first language, you should use google before saying something like that.

Medium in art terms refers to music, movies, painting, drawing etc. That's on the macro scale however, because in the details of each of those there are mediums like water colors, acryllic, or oil in regards to painting.

In English words typically have much more than one meaning, and often meanings which aren't recorded in dictionaries because they're so dependent on context, pitch and tone, and other nuances. This is why English is easy to learn on the technical level, as well as hard on the social level, but often called cultured as a language. Funnily enough this is also what makes English a great medium for poetry and literature.

I've generally enjoyed a lot of Masaaki's works, as few as I've watched (Ping Pong the Animation, The Tatami Galaxy).

The premise sounds rather interesting, I'll give it a go.

Thanks chummer.
