The city is a playground. How do you get around? Motorcycles seem to be the popular choice, with bicycles being a close second.
I've been considering customized electric boards and skates as an alternative. They can be made to run at a hushed volume and can reach speeds of 20+mph. Some versions even have suspension, large wheels, etc.

I walk because I'm a giant pleb, or use public transportation, or my shitty 2002 Saturn if I need to.
I would like to have a motorcycle. Shit's cheaper on gas and easier to find parking for. But a few years ago, I tried skateboarding because I thought it'd be cool to be able to get around with something simple and easy to transport like a skateboard. I had no intention of using it for anything other than transportation, and was riding it around for a mere month or so when I happened to hit a crack on the sidewalk and fell off wrong. Broke my ankle and it took three fucking months to heal well enough for me to walk on it.
Since then, I've decided I probably ought to stay away from something like a motorcycle so I don't kill myself. I don't even trust myself on a bike.
Shit sucks.

I could go from casually strolling to rolling down a hill at 15-20MPH instantly, every incline was an opportunity to coast and indoor areas were like fresh powder to a skier. Very interested in this thread, and monitoring closely. Good thread, OP. A fully customized, electric, carbon fiber skateboard is the vehicle of my wettest dreams.
My current skateboard is pretty modified as it is for a regular skateboard.
I use magnesium trucks for lightness, and slapped some 60MM wheels on em with 80A softness for a quieter, less bumpy ride. Also put rubber dampeners between where the trucks get bolted down to the deck. Absorbs a lot of the vibration when you're riding on asphalt and sidewalks. The larger wheels allow me to roll over small cracks and such easily.
I have two friends studying industrial design, and they told me that making a deck out of carbon fiber is quite feasible. My dream would be to add my current truck/wheel setup to that deck, then add electronics to it. Some headlights or a laser line to scan for cracks or other obstacles in front of you during night rides, motors for going uphill obviously, preferably charging themselves up while you're kicking the pavement manually with a dynamo or something, and for the cherry on top, some sort of system that allows you to remotely control the board or call it to your location with a wireless device.
Cyberpunk as fuck.

I've been thinking about it, and I don't think it would be too much of an issue. You would simply plant your leading foot on the wheel, kick off with your rear foot, then place it down. Additionally, you would no longer have to worry about the (very, very real) possibility of slipping and falling over backwards when walking uphill, because the axel would be facing the wrong direction.

DO IT! The hardest part would difinetely be the RC component, mostly because of how unconventional skateboard are when it comes to steering. best option would probably be two seperate motors in the rear wheels, or better yet one motor for each wheel, but neither of these are very good options as motors are expensive and tank drive doesn't lend itself well to thin rectangles. It would be awesome if you could install mechanums or omniwheels, but they would be horrifically bumpy to ride on, and a bit of a liability.

I'm assuming they're made out of hard plastic, though? That could be a game breaker in terms of managing vibrations when riding. Rough gravel can get so bumpy your feet go numb after a while riding that shit. Soft wheels are almost a must.
Also, that site says they're for robots, so I doubt they could carry an adult male, let alone survive a land after an ollie. Just guessing though.
>>22630
The hardest thing with those little motors (and I'm only guessing since I know fuck all about electronics really) to get down right would probably be their durability. I mean, skating out in the traffic can get really rough on a board. Many bumps, always vibrating shitty asphalt, many shocks etc. Wonder if there are more durable models out there. You guys seem to be great at finding these components, so lemme know if you come across anything.

Omniwheels have to be diagonal to work, and that's not very efficient for coasting. Mechanums would be better as they can be facing forward, but they're not perfectly smooth and both options would make for a bumpy ride. The ideal solution would be 4 independently powered and controlled castor wheels (Swerve drive), but at that point your standing on 8 motors with the necessary gearing and a 30lb battery.

Yeah, I guess it'd be smarter to just stick to my original plan which didn't include any special wheels, just a carbon fiber deck with magnesium trucks and large soft wheels and the electronic components, which is where it gets iffy anyway. Smarter to start with that project and then maybe move on from there.
The deck is easy, or so say my friends, they seemed pretty confident they could do it.
The trucks and wheels I already have.
The electronics, I have no fucking idea how to get done. I looked some stuff up a few months ago but none of it was what I wanted. I especially want a board that'll charge itself when you're pushing it manually and then spend some of that energy when you can't - say when you're going uphill.
Also, all those mechanisms should still allow you to do an ollie. That means very little bulk, and the tail should be able to touch the ground without an obstacle. Anyone can make a giant motorized skateboard (its been done a lot of times before), but to keep it light, keep it small, and keep it durable is where things get messy as fuck.
No.22642

sadly, just like in robotics, call the weight comes from the batteries and motors. However, what I like about your project (and that I haven't seen done before) is that the powered portion of the board is not its main feature. This means that you can skimp on batteries and save a TON of weight.
I'm not exactly great with electronics, but I firmly believe that you can accomplish anything with the right set of instructions. on that note here's something i believe is very relevant to your problem:

you'd hate skateboarding then. On a bike, you can coast for a good long time and the motion is nice and cyclical(heh) so you can just kinda do it without much care. Keeping your speed up on a board is much more difficult, and it's all kicks so it's a bit more tiring.
Also skateboards don't easily fit in a backpack or anything, and look unprofessional; they mark you, in a sense. You can't lock them up easily, so if you're going to the shops or something, you have to carry this big plank around. But bikes are ubiquitous and people think nothing of them when they're just sitting around chained to a rack.
You might be better off with rollerblades. They can look cool, the movement to keep going is just as casual as on a bike, but they're not much bigger than a pair of boots so they'll fit into most bags. In a pinch, they can be tied together and slung over a shoulder, though it makes you look like a bit of a dork. They're not as popular anymore, but if you get ones in decent colors instead of bright 80s nerf shit for kids, you don't look too off. The wheels are still hard and shitty, but you've got a bunch of them and more direct control so you're less liable to come to a complete and sudden stop at the first crack.

…God I miss rollerblades so much.
Anyway, the problems such as street cracks can be handled– if you think they're that big a problem, you haven't done enough riding. You get around it, especially when you get up to the huge wheel sizes and softer plastics. Drill a hole in the board if you wanna lock it up Weld a loop to the trucks if you wanna be hardcore.

The difference though is that rollerblades are actually a useful mode of transport. You might look like a massive fag, but a skateboard is an objectively poor commuter vehicle and everyone knows it, skaters stick to doing tricks and shit. Commuting by a typical skateboard is probably more tiring than walking it. Longboards are for people who don't know how to ride bikes and seemingly live in non-euclidian spaces where everything is permanently downhill from everyone at all times, and have the same problems as skateboards to get going and with dealing with badly maintained sidewalks/roads. Rollerblades, while looking dorky as shit, are at least viable for getting around short distances with less effort than walking since the heightened control and more wheels (that usually have a lot of roundness to them, like racing bike wheels as opposed to the flat wheels of skateboards) let you take unevenness a bit better, and the kicking movement is a bit more natural than the kicking to get going on skate/longboards. Plus, again, if you get skates in a tasteful color scheme, it's just anachronistic and not actively horrible dudebro shit like longboards are or inappropriate and inefficient for commuting like skateboards.
Bikes are still king forever, though. I dunno if they ever took off, but there's also designs for bikes where the whole front half can pivot and shit for tighter cornering in urban environments to weave around people and shit. I think they failed because they're horribly dangerous and you should be on the road anyway and you can get more than tight enough maneuvering with a BMX.

Sure. Hook up a generator to the center of the wheel and fix it to the frame of the thing, then use a power regulator to convert it to usable DC.
You probably wouldn't be able to do it on a skateboard, but fore sure on a bike.

digitigrade Stilts/leg braces with wheels like those in the heels, with "toes" in the front.
Here's a shitty MS Paint design I just drew up. Black is the frame, red is the person's leg. A pair of controls in either hand connected by wires down the frame on the legs would control the wheels.
Pretty much motorized skates.
I think the digitigrade design would be more stable and provide better steering & mobility.

https://vimeo.com/134895506
i'm partial because i'm a trials rider myself, but I've been riding for five years and am just barely getting near the skill level of this video. ali's been riding for something like 15 years now, i think a tad more. it has many upsides though
>capable of riding the most locations, dirt or smooth surfaces
>least enforcement by the police, able to violate traffic laws and ride spots that skaters are derezzed at
>the fastest form of transport in a dense city
>requires no fuel but has potential range for over 100 miles in a day
i have many many more videos to share as well as being happy to answer any questions about cycle trials and street trials. it's a small sport so i've met and ridden with most of the top pros… including ali, danny macaskill, hans rey.. can probably answer some questions about it. i have some knowledge of BMX and mountain/road biking as well

Not much worry about shitty pavement in the average /cyber/sprawl. Sure, you get a practical, all-terrain vehicle in a MTB that's a lot more comfortable over long distances than the average board/skate/whatever; but there's no style to it unless you go full BMX/trials.

magnets are 100% a dead end when it comes to hoverboards, absolutely no question. we can already create them with hoverskirts, they just don't look or work at all how people want them to. The problem is when something is hovering, it is effectively frictionless in every direction, not just the one you want to be moving in. This makes them extremely unmaneuverable and impossible to stay on top of, as they always want to get out from under you. Oh, and don't forget that turning yourself on a frictionless object is like trying to point in a direction on a swivel chair without touching the ground. The only other way to make a hoverboard would be to give it flying (or ground effect) abilities, which would either look like the Williams X-jet or a very flat multicopter.

Might be able to get around the turning difficulties with some kind of propulsion system. If you put the propulsion spots on ball joints and on all edges and some more toward the center you could probably get them working together to kind of make an artificial friction.
I know artificial friction sounds dumb but what I mean is that the propulsion jets or whatever work together in a way that keeps the board steady and moving in the direction you want it to.
If you want to go forward, some jets will push you forward while others push off to the sides to keep you in a straight line.
They'll have a hell of a time programming it and the learning curve would probably be pretty steep though.
