" It can also be argued that DNA is nothing more than a program designed to preserve itself. Life has become more complex in the overwhelming sea of information. And life, when organized into species, relies upon genes to be its memory system. So, man is an individual only because of his intangible memory... and memory cannot be defined, but it defines mankind. The advent of computers, and the subsequent accumulation of incalculable data has given rise to a new system of memory and thought parallel to your own. Humanity has underestimated the consequences of computerization."

Let's have a thread on DIY projects that we can all do to hone our skills. DIY is /cyber/ as fuuark, after all.

Anyway, I've heard cantennas, and biquad dishes thrown around a lot so here is a breakdown on those for anyone interested.

Obviously anything hardware is schway.

Programming counts, but to a lesser extent as it's in a class of its own. Anything from a pi is schway. NAS's, wifi extenders, seedboxes, whatever.

If it's a DIY project, post it here so we can all try our hands at it!

I'm going to try and find a way to make a pocket watch emit light onto a thin piece of glass directly above it, telling the time on the glass instead of the watch. It's nothing impressive, but it's technically hacking since a pocketwatch counts as hardware.

I made a laser once.

Started as a normal laser pointer, but I made it hot enough to light fires about a foot away.

It was a pretty fun project back then, but my mom made me dismantle it. She thought I was trying to make weapons.

I suggested in a previous thread a while ago, that /cyber/ should try its hand at a DIY phone. i mean, its certainly possible, and could be quite fun. it might shut up all the smartphone haters and whatnot.

open-source phones (excluding the baseband chip) already exist, the problem is you need to make larger orders to get a company to print the mainboard.

openmoko or a related company is collecting purchases and will restart production if enough come together, they got like €5k out of €10k but it doesn't seem likely to happen before the neo900 goes into production which uses their mainboard afaik.

someone still needs to hack or infiltrate a baseband chip company and liberate the plans for those chips along with documentation.

Love this thread, op

Anyone have one of the wr702n mini routers you can put openWRT on? If not they're super versatile and you should pick one up. They have a few accessible gpio pins running on standard 3v3 logic.

Good project to get started with it

I had an idea once when I was broke as fuck and had to catch wifi by loitering around some guy's house a few blocks away from my place.

I thought it would be cool to relay his wifi to my place by making a chain of wifi sender/receiver devices which are all spaced 15 metres apart and well hidden. Anyone tried dat shit?

I would suggest some more direct system. Maybe a couple Yagi antennas? They direct the signal in a tiny cone. You wouldn't have to use wifi at all for that matter.

You can make your own with some PVC pipe and a tape measure

I was going to ask you for a link and then I decided not to be a shazbot.

Fo shizzle? If that shit works then that's glorious. I'm totally trying it out after I move places.

It would be cool to make a network grid of wifi relaying broadcasters around the city in order to achieve UNIVERSAL WIFI. Then the masses can have free access to data. There are a few problems though: a) wifi sources have to be reliable and consistent, b) WEP/WPA has to be pre-cracked by the relayer, c) broadcasters need a power source, d) they need to be well hidden.

ooph, I can see my future now:

>Free wifi/internet from antennas

>Free/cheap computer parts from junkyard scavenging

>Custom built computers running on l00nix, generating brouzouf 24/7 via internet hustle

Niggas… gentlemen… my future is secure, I'm ready for retirement.

Gotta go OLD SKOOL WARDriving. Pringle chip cans make awesome WiFi antennas. TNC and coax off router, clean coating off inside and out of metal on bottom of the can, bolt or solder the center lead of the coax to the bottom of the can and attach the braided/foil part to some sort of ground. The shape of the can and the aluminum on the sidewalls of the can make for an awesome waveguide and a nearly perfect 1:1 SWR match for 2.4/2.5 GHz. If you have old skool PC/MCIA WiFi card, a single wire to bottom of can then to the copper antenna panel on the WiFi card. This antenna will be VERY directional so it's nice for leach hunting too.

You're certainly not the first person to think of this. They're called meshnets and they're a really cool but not particularly feasible idea.

Man, I just recently moved and there's a Starbuck's down the road, maybe a little more than a mile away. If I made a cantenna do you think it could reach it?
