I only play creative commons music, news, podcasts, etc.

I only have a few listeners during the week (esp. at night), but more people tune in on the weekend to find out about local events.

You're in a running machine. At boot your dumped into its video memory (~32kB) so at most you can do around there is fiddle with the display. First 64 bytes (addr 0h to 40h) are basic DMA input devices, and the next 8 bytes after that belong to the video control port. Set bit 5 of byte @ 43h to enable scanlines (write 98 or 88 to unset).

Outside the v.RAM you'll find machine code some of it is running to generate the hex editor you're using, edit that without a proper replacement in line and you'll be lost – The JS console will report if you invalid instruction, if you're just stuck in a loop it's not an error but you could still be cut off.

There's separate stacks for return addresses and parameters, (prevents all stack smashing exploits – why aren't our computers using this?), so if you want root status on login you'll have to get a bit more creative.

I figured out some other bytes.

The byte at 40h appears to be the cursor size. High nybble is width in pixels low nybble is height.

Byte 41h is the cursor position within the char. High nybble is the left offset in pixels, low nybble is offset from top.

So, 9f 00 at 40h-41h and you get a block cursor, 99 07 gives a half block, and 1f 20 gives a cursor sort of like a modern vertical line text carat.

44h and 46h are is cursor location on screen. 44h (and maybe 45h) being text column. 46h (& 47h?) is the text row. I was able to call a small function that just changed the cursor pos in a loop. I think the high bytes (45 and 47) are the part of 16bit cursor position values since setting the low bytes to zeros while the high bytes have ones (row = 256+) leaves the cursor off screen instead of back at the origin (top / left).

Well… you need low-level skills. I got mine growing up at a time when computers didn't have maths co-processors or 3D cards, and I was into the 'demo' scene… e.g. Future Crew. So I learned assembly to do 3D gfx on slow computers. Also to hack out the copy protection on games and modify save game files. So I'm used to hex editors and the like.

But that era is gone, I don't know how you would go through that now.

Get into game translations. I recently went for an old japanese only PSX Adventure Game looking for the text, and actually everything was compressed in some weird way and the "script" was just pointers to the letters in a big non-standard texture file. I Spend hours debugging this thing but eventually got everything together. Anyway, there are many translation groups and if you want to hack something useful without getting into trouble this is a great activity.

I was thinking of scripting in secrets that takes you to other areas and other stuff, and maybe scripting random events, but in the end all I did was update the picture and add a "scary" 404 page meant to discourage finding the secrets the wrong way. I don't think it's hard-coded into the machine, but part of the displayed code of the Hex Editor that's running. I think it's a branch in the Hex Editor code.

If you go WAY down in the memory space (or is it UP b/c increasing values?) then you start to see the program's execution stack, as evidenced by the garbage left over from decoding stuff.

I haven't verified the meaning of the stack, i.e. could be heap variables instead, or maybe the heap is somewhere else.

This got me thinking. At first I thought the PW just unlocked some pre-existing code but I think you're right.

I found out that you don't have to do the 00005fe4 "Jump". You can just input what that jump reveals manually. Then "frag" the "!". You can also enter other words too, but they don't reveal the "Exe-Me"… Instead of zeroing the "[!]", you can clearing the input box with spaces and it will revert to a "|?|".

Actually, I think some /x/-tier thinking might be needed.

When the Skull puts the words in its box and the cursor on its [!], it's thinking something weird: "!!1!!!!1"

At first I thought it was just the internet "angry exclamation" meme like:

"Fuck YOU!!!1!!one!!"

But the other times the Skull was thinking about a hint, so that might be a hint. You can't just "frag" the exclamation mark with any old value. It has to be a space (20 in hex) or NULL (00 in hex).

If you "frag" the exclamation marks into Zeros you get: 0010001.

10001hex is 65537. That is actually a special number. It's the largest known Fermat Prime.

Also, "00100001" in binary is 21hex, which is the hex value of the symbol for the exclamation mark (that's under the cursor). 21 hex is 33 in decimal. I know for a fact that 33 has occult meanings.

What got me thinking down occult lines for hints (besides the "take it to /x/") is the words that the skull reveals. Doing a google search on that turns up some very interesting stuff about alchemy that, when taken in context with the theme of "Frag the 33", seems a bit ominous. The pinnacle of Alchemy was reached during the lifetime of Fermat, thereafter becoming replaced by the chemistry backed by the scientific method. Any other insight regarding said revealed phrase?

I don't know what the "blood red" could symbolize, but it might also be a hint along with "keep going".
