uh, so what do you want to *do* with your computer? I could recommend octave, but unless you're into numerical computing and are looking for a free alternative to matlab I doubt that's going to make you very happy…
Anyway, become proficient with the shell and coreutils. If shit hits the fan, if anything works, that will be it. Who knows, you might even grow to like it.

awesome wm is a good intro to tiling wms, but when you are comfortable with keyboard navigation try moving to i3, it's more "manual" in a sense but have more freedom.

i3, i3bar and dmenu for the minimalism factor, although from what I can recall installing i3, i3bar comes with it.

xmobar is bretty nice.
I prefer bspwm to i3, but opinions.
mpd, and ncmpcpp for music
terminology for terminal emulator,
zshell and oh-my-zsh for rice
I prefer my applications to all be in-terminal, so Toxic for TOX, rtorrent for bittorrent, weechat for irc, and links for web browseing.
Depending on your needs you might want some plugins for vim or emacs, whatever you prefer.
But at this point we're flying in the face of minimalizm.

thnx everyone for the input and yeah i love the minimalist look and the text based everything. im working on setting it up right now, but considering how long it took me to get it installed it might take a while to set up i have to learn a bit of LUA for configuring the awesome.conf and maybe eventueally switch over to i3 also do yall know of any hyper terminal like programs to talk to cisco routers and switches throufgh a rs232 connect

Before I forget, https://wiki.installgentoo.com/index.php/List_of_recommended_GNU/Linux_software can be a very good resource. It's compiled by halfchan /g/ and they also have some good input on ricing out your computer too.

> talk to cisco routers and switches throufgh a rs232 connect
You should see the rs232 listed in /dev/ as a "tty".
Everything in linux is a file, so you can just read from it.
# Dump somefile
cat [somefile]
# Write to somefile
echo "output" > [somefile]
# The above clobers the file.
So, if you "cd /dev" you should be able to "ls -l" and see the serial devices, typically: "/dev/ttyS0" and/or "/dev/ttyS1".
So you can just read / write from these files:
echo "something" > /dev/ttyS0
cat /dev/ttyS0
Try opening a separate terminal for the "cat" command, then you can monitor the output while you "echo" from another terminal.
If you get gibberish you might need to set the speed, so you can use "stty" for that.
stty -speed 19200 < /dev/ttyS1
stty -speed 19200 -f /dev/ttyS1
Change the speed and device name to suit.
If your device has an interactive mode you might be able to join the commands via "&" and do both reading and writing over terminal.
When in doubt, RTFM:
man stty

Shitposting aside, you'll want a tiling wm, a bitmap font, rxvt-unicode for terminal emulator, mpd+ncmpcpp for music (though I use mocp because the db for mpd won't fucking read the tags for the majority of my music no matter what I do), mpv for video, irssi for IRC, tmux for tiling terminals, mutt/alpine for email (hope you don't get HTML emails), and a reason for not using Slackware.

Dude, you're a fucking tard, schway. I'll answer anyways though;
Spectrwm or a borderless theme for XFCE
Atom text editor.
Geany IDE, if you're into that kinda thing.
Custom firefox userchrome.
Stylish for firefox. (which has the ability to edit your userchrome)
Whisker menu for XFCE.
Remove the dock panel on the bottom.
Any dark GTK theme.
Ardour, Hydrogen, or LMMS if you into music.
Tesseract.gg, Warsow, and Chocolate Doom for gaymen.
If you end up liking Arch, I'd reccomend you try Parabola to fully escape the corpcuckery.

"It did not work" is not enough information to tell you *why* it did not work and what you need to change in order to make it work.
Yes, it should be possible, although I haven't personally done so for years, as I find netbooting when installing easier.

/connect <ircserver>
ex /connect Rizon
or /connect irc://irc.rizon.net
then /nick <yournick>
ex /nick f4gg0t
register your nick if you want
then /join #channel
ex /join #8chan
You might want to look at the ways to split-window, easy mode is
/splith
/window +1
/window -1
this way to can join different channels, you can also use tabs, no-width windows and more.

Try a tiling window manager. i3 and awesome are good choices. StumpWM is great if you're a Lisp guy and don't mind putting in a lot of work to customize it because the defaults suck.
Whatever you pick, you could probably spend a lot of time here because they tend to be highly customizable.
Definitely check out colour schemes and get some fonts you like going.
Try some CLI alternatives for some applications. For example, I was very impressed with the file browser called ranger.

The arch version itself was outdated in noobs, all other OS's work as far as I know but Arch is the only one that hasn't been updated for whatever reason.
