>"Megacorps are so powerful that they can ignore the law, possess their own heavily armed (often military-sized) private armies, hold 'sovereign' territory, and possibly even act as outright governments. They often exercise a large degree of control over their employees, taking the idea of 'corporate culture' to an extreme."
So, if a corp is large enough and influential enough, but doesn't act like a mindless brute, it's still not a megacorp?
Besides, why would they own their own army, when they can just rent NATO?
Corporate armies was a fantasy of the 80s, the harsh reality is, that you don't need an army as long as you can manipulate the media and have a few politicians in your pocket. Then whatever national army you might need, you can eventually use.
A brilliant scam, really, all the benefits, zero fuss.

Only because they were broken after WW2, before that the zaibatsu essentially ``were`` the Japanese government. And even today they suck hard on that government teat, essentially having the ability to levy taxes on the population.

>America may be the current home of corporatocracy, but they've got nothing on what Europe was up to during the colonial period.
Um, what do you think the EU is, precisely? It's a trade union started by the European Coal and Steel Community, European Economic Community and European Atomic Energy Community, a trade/industry focused groups now given political power.
Whereas in the US lobbying is more informal process happening, as per the word itself, in the lobby. In EU, it has become a formal part of the proceedings.
Jesus, why do you think Germany is pushing Syrian Refugees unto other countries? They want to drive labour costs down across the continent and what better way to do it, than to import a few "black robots" from Africa and the Middle East.
And so what if half or more of them will never work? The social costs will force governments to enter austerity, thus achieving much the same effect.
My point is, Megacorps don't need to have their own militaries, they can just rent the existing ones. And since they have been picking up cognitive studies graduates by the bushel, they have the psy-op skills to do it.
