 No.36043

This is a call to true /cyber/ folk.

The soft revolution and first major apocalypse approaches. This is real. It will be in your lifetime sooner than you might be prepared for. I'm compelled to remind you that the heart of cyber is not based in superficial technology. It is based in primitive survival. It is based in native living. It is open to exploiting technological advances. Many if not most of you know this. Many of you need to be reminded.

There is no greater knowledge than survival in the natural world. It means knowing how to live off the land. Growing food. Shelter. Water. Fire. Harnessing electricity. Independence. You must value the Luddites. Though they may not respect everything you do, they are your friends and even greatest assets. There's great irony in cyber heroes having to reject many forms of technology to keep tyranny at bay. You embrace technology to a maximum where it's a path of freedom and reject it where it is the path of authority. It won't always be clear. And so you must err on the side of humanity or you will be dominated by what soon approaches. You'll try to be wise. You'll try to be open.

Natural living may embrace cybernetics but it is natural living that we must foremost embrace. I am with you. We have the technology. We must have the wisdom.

>>36043

Cyberpunk isn't technophobia or technophilia, it's about keeping yourself safe by not being a fucking idiot. And no, society isn't going to collapse anytime soon, governments and corporations aren't going anywhere.

 No.36091

>>36062

I develop hardware and software. I'm not a luddite.

>>36075

That's the underlying point. I hope it's clear. Careless people who only obsess with the superficial (perhaps >>36062 but I will forgive the remark) become the least equipped to survive or even hold compassion for cyber survivalists if even a slight aspect of any technology is questioned or rejected. They become vectors of propaganda for tyranny. They become the opposite of cyberpunk. They become weak to real survival.

We disagree on the coming collapse. That's fine. May your view hold true. We agree that many governments and many of the corporations they enable aren't going anywhere soon. They will in fact benefit greatly from a broader type of collapse. When large portions of the US power grid go dark for longer than one month, and food distribution is disrupted, and it will happen, the term collapse will seem accurate. It will seem especially so to most of the fragile masses in cities.

Not being a fucking idiot is part of it. There are many forms of being connected and many forms of being disconnected.

>governments and corps can be gotten rid of

bro I don't think that's how it works. an anarchy can't strong enough to stand up to opposing forces like countries and megacorps without a military.

What can be done is to replace the system or leaders we have in place, but some system is needed, otherwise any newfound freedom won't last long.

>>36332

/cyber/ includes both subgenre and subculture. arguing about what is and isn't cyberpunk always ends badly.

>leaders we have in place, but some system is needed

That's exactly what will that newfound freedom not last long.

It just needs to be a mostly worldwide change otherwise it will be crushed by autoritharians as history showed.

bro I don't think that's how it works.

Voting is just another tool used by authoritarians to cloak and justify their power as they can no longer rely on divine right since we burst that bubble, so they'll base their "right" to power on ad populum fallacies instead. Letting us vote is nothing but an empty gesture to give us the semblance of control when really the only options are the ones approved by the state and media. It's insane and defeatist to keep doing the same thing, voting over and over just because everyone else does, and expecting different results. It is no measure of good health to conform to an ill society. Democracy is tyranny by majority. By voting you are voting yes for the system, you are going out of your way to scribble a check on a piece of paper that says "I have faith in this system". By continuously choosing the lesser of two evils, picking option poop over option doodoo, you are feeding the oppressive troll that is this system. If voting could truly change the system it would be illegal.

We do not believe in presidents, committees, or kings.

We rely on rough consensus and running code.

Learn some history, you young whippersnapper.

http://www.ietf.org/tao.html

In many ways, the IETF runs on the beliefs of its participants. One of the "founding beliefs" is embodied in an early quote about the IETF from David Clark: "We reject kings, presidents and voting. We believe in rough consensus and running code".

but remember, democracy or "majority consensus" is tyranny by majority.

This is why no one single president or politician could ever represent any and all people in the entire world fairly. We need a new system that functions on the philosophy that the greatest expression of freedom is doing whatever you want so long as it does not harm or effect anyone else.

Did I say that?

But in all honesty, they're probably not, because they're so massive and absurdly effective. I don't see an Enron-type event taking out Micro$haft or Apple, although M$ may start dying harder in the consumer sector as people become aware of the shit that Win10 pulls.

>>36509

The person you know might not be a luddite either. Just to reiterate, I'm not a luddite. There's a meaningful difference between conscientiously rejecting many types of technology for, perhaps, cautionary and ethical reasons vs. rejecting technology. It has nothing to do with resistance to change. It has everything to do with embracing change. Change is not always the material people consider new.

RMS is a good example. Misinformed people toss Stallman off as something of a luddite. He's not. He embraces all sorts of technology. In the world of computers he strives for first principles of transparency and perpetuating freedom. That's because anything that's a big double-edged sword against individual freedom is worth rejecting and fighting. I fear where the world would have been now if not for those ideals. I fear where the world may go.

OP makes a good post and shills reduce the thread to shit flinging to fuck up the thread: the thread

OP don't ever stop making these threads. The shills hate it and that's why these fake ass people who seem to hate the thread and disagree stay in the thread and shit it up instead of just leaving. they are messing it up intentionally because you are telling the truth, shills thrive on lies. they eat up lies like vitamins. don't stop spreading the truth. they HATE it.

I appreciate it. I won't. Don't stop either. If the original sentiment matters to anyone, it was worth it. Some people are interested in survival and tech without superficial adoption but this isn't the best place to bring up certain topics. Consider it no loss when it fades. Other threads for other times.

One more thing. Here's parting advice for now to anyone who cared. Learn a lot about a lot of 'things that matter.' Start with anything practical. Pick something. Take it one step at a time. Reading is an important first step; doing it repeatedly is how it becomes a skill. Shit worth knowing tends to be hard at first and you might want to say fuck it. Keep going. Then comes the fun.
