Ladies and Gentlemen,

I started reading cyberpunk fiction back in the 1980s.

In particular, I liked the depiction of drug use in _Hardwired_ by Walter Jon Williams.

Back then it was possible to use street drugs but still have a middle-class life.

We listened to the warning that the War on Drugs was a war on civil liberties. We got older and we accepted that we had to pass urine tests and hair tests to confirm that we had not been using lately. But it got worse and worse and worse.

Now the War on Terror is eradicating the remnants of civil liberties.

I can't believe in cyberpunk fantasies. I can't believe in a Walter Jon Williams world any more. The War on Drugs was ridiculously effective. It killed off civil liberties.

The fact is that street punks must survive first. Even if you're nihilistic and suicidal, you have to make sure to die on your own terms. Getting access to street drugs nowadays entails too many compromises, too many sacrifices on your personal independence.

(Note: I am fully aware that some people can use Tor to browse bitcoin-based markets. Apparently these people live in countries where parcels are not searched. I live in a country where parcels are searched thoroughly.)

However, having survived without drugs for many years, it has become clear to me that drugs were just part of the picture. A cyberpunk ought to have dangerous drugs and dangerous weapons.

Our black markets are simply not up to the task of equipping people with both drugs and weapons. Even if we had weapons, we would not have a serious chance of attacking the plutocrats. We *could* try revolutions, but the plutocrats would probably co-opt the revolutions.

We could try to build an alternate society before the old one collapses. E.g. we could learn how to rig up solar panels and how to distill rainwater. But that is not easy: many governments want to tax solar panels and criminalize rainwater collection.

And a word about sex. The original cyberpunk stories were soaked in Baby-Boomer-style sexual hedonism. That is crap and it will not work. Sexual hedonists are not going to succeed at any kind of revolution; they are going to be too busy visiting the STD clinics.

My head hurts and I don't have decent painkillers because the damn doctors don't want to over-prescribe.

Even if Putin crushes the evil Yankee empire, the aftermath will not be pretty. A Russian-Chinese alliance will not be very joyful. It will not have a lot of room for civil liberties. Maybe Putin will let us have solar panels.

Most of you are probably aware that cyberpunk has substantial connections to noir detective stories.

_Noir_ was invented by Dashiell Hammett. He was working as a Pinkerton and a crooked capitalist offered him lots of brouzouf to assassinate a labor leader.

_Noir_ exists because labor unions don't struggle on a level playing field. Labor unions played an uphill battle, even before they were taken over by organized crime.

Cyberpunk is, in my humble opinion, very relevant to lower-class workers.

And if you're not lower-class right now, watch out for downward mobility. Maybe you're part of the precariat, and maybe you might get pushed down into the underclass faster than you expect.

How can the lower classes resist? Not very well, IMHO.

In Taiwan, for example, the USA poisons most politics. Most of the locals do NOT want to be part of the Chinese empire. And so they are irrationally infatuated with the USA, to the point where they don't realize that it is an empire.

The USA lower classes must resist the USA empire. But that means that the Taiwanese lower classes will NEVER join them.

So if you were hoping for some international lower-class resistance to USA tyranny, you might want to re-examine the evidence.

A few megacorps are so obviously evil that almost everyone hates them. Monsanto comes to mind. But these megacorps own the USA government.

I've said my piece. Now I am going to go out into meatspace and try to link up with some real-life computer programmers, to see whether they are politically savvy.

Even if I had an ARMY of politically conscious programmers, it's not likely I could accomplish much with them. But what the hell, I'm not going to stay online all night. I might as well roll the dice with meatspace.

Resistance to the TPP is actually a bright spot in my worldview.

Taiwan's people trust the USA far too much, so many of them are eager for Taiwan to enter TPP and related treaties.

All the programmers speak Mandarin.

But at least I discovered something about Python: attempts to declare variables crash simple programs.

Sigh.

There is no var in Python.

Also, I am advised that there is no spoon.

Matrix references in 2015.

>Even

It would be replacing cancer with AIDS if that happens. In a situation where the two evils are oligarchy vs. mafia with a very thin veil cast over it, I find the latter worse.

I'm not sure how much of a difference there is between Western banker oligarchy and Eastern czarism.

Now I am at an even worse meetup.

All the programmers speak Mandarin to each other, and I have learned nothing but despair.

>czarism

If only. A strong czar would make at least 50% of ex-USSR territories close allies by now. But a head of an organized crime group that is trying to look like a bunch of oligarchs is just flailing around destroying everything he can't immediately put in his pockets.

If Putin is just a crime boss, then he won't last much longer. Oil is cheap and it will stay cheap.

But perhaps Putin will go away sooner rather than later. Who or what will replace him?

But beyond that…

The real question is, how soon will Russia devote its resources to making cyborgs like pic related?

>If Putin is just a crime boss, then he won't last much longer. Oil is cheap and it will stay cheap.

>just

He is "just" a crime boss with a huge well trained and even better corrupted police force. He is a de facto dictator. The difference from being your average African one is he manipulates the masses using a colossal propaganda machine instead of just scaring them into submission with drugged kids with AK-47s.

>But perhaps Putin will go away sooner rather than later. Who or what will replace him?

Someone who will be believe to be more willing to compromise and act in the interests of numerous monopolies (in different areas, duh). If it ever comes to pass, his successor would be unofficially chosen by the lesser crime bosses.

>The real question is, how soon will Russia devote its resources to making cyborgs like pic related?

Not in the nearest 50-70 years for absolute certain.

The purpose of tripfags is to allude to Devo songs.

But while you're at it, you should post your physical address and a signed invitation to the cops.
