Hey what's up chummers? In multiple threads I heard from some of you guys that you're able to pick up used computer equipment for free, basically dumpster diving or because your work through them out. Any of you guys want to share your methods, what places to look, etc.it'd be cool if you posted your stories here.

https://www.freecycle.org/

One anon said he was able to get some stuff from this?

 No.37434

at work:

"hey i broke this mouse where should i put it?"

the answer will be where to look…

anywhere else:

look for a dumpster near a place that use electronics…

It's not that hard.

I have to say, this is a pretty good guide. I've dumpster dived before but this is a nice write-up, really.

 No.37472

Guys, aren't you even a little bit disgusted to go through the trash?

>>37454

pretty good tutorial.

 No.37484

>>37472

I just got done reading that myself. I've never done it before but if you only try dumpsters that are less likely to contain organic waste then you shouldn't have to experience much disgust.

I'm tempted to give it a try. I've got a pretty big car which should make things easier, although I don't know of anywhere in my city that's relatively quiet even at night. Most of the back alleys are known to be rampant with working girls and smack-heads come dusk. I might have more luck after 2am, but I've got a feeling that I'd just stick out like a sore thumb, slowly driving around the center at night. I'll either get propositioned or pulled over by the fuzz.

Glad you guys liked the guide. Remember, the next few days will be fantastic for diving, thanks to Black Friday returns.

>>37472

Nope, not at all.

>>37484

Take a friend if you have any and go in the wee hours of the morning. Maybe even more like 3-4 AM.

I have adapted my path from home to work to pass by community dumping places. You find a lot of old tv and sometimes computers or printers. I use the parts to build electronic shit. Yesterday i found a hard drive in a home cinema/media center.

 No.37599

>>37496

I might just do that. I've been keeping half an eye out for good dumpsters to hit, and like you say, this is the perfect time to hit them.

I'll check in if I find anything cool.

have u guys seen this video.. pretty rad pc build for just $40 does anyone have experience with building pc's from the trash ?! i think this might be a nice way to set up some kind of server

 No.37627

when I went to college, there was a rather giant storage room with a massive (bigger than an average bathroom" box on top of a pallet just full of old computer parts that they were throwing out. I went there at least 20 times and would spend a half hour sorting through shit, I think I only saw a staff member in there once and they knew what I was doing and didn't care. Got a bunch of really cool old parts from stuff between the 1970s and early 2000s.

I discovered it by accident one day when I went through the building checking all the door handles. If you're in a college with a big computer emphasis just go to that area at 12 or 1am and check all the door handles and see what you find

 No.37629

>>37627

I should also mention that door handle checking can yield you lots of other fun things, such as machine rooms and roofs. People unlock and forget to relock doors all the time, it's just a matter of getting lucky / being diligent

I live in the burbs and keeping an eye on the apartment complex dumpsters has paid off handsomely. In my complex, I found a 2014 iMac 27" with a bullet hole through it (never change, Texas). It yeilded up RAM, the optical drive, 1Tb HDD and the case screws.

Look around a few days after Christmas, as that's usually when casual computer users get new rigs and more often than not just toss their old stuff.

 No.38194

>>37649

thanks for that info

 No.39484

how viable is it to assemble a new rig from odds and ends found diving? nothing crazy special, just something that worked

 No.39485

>>39484

Definitely doable, it'll just take time to find the parts and luck for the parts to work. Might as well snag all the cables you can find on the way.

 No.39503

The place where I live has a huge ass dumpster with tech stuff, the problem is it's being watched 24/7 by people who make a living out of the stuff other people throw there

 No.39504

>people who make a living out of the stuff other people throw there

Isn't that illegal, Chummer? Sic the suits on 'em, then reap the rewards.

not in the third world shithole I live in

sounds like it's time to "throw out" a flash drive full of malware, then

 No.44548

Can you guys tell me what your average run is like?

I just go to Frito lay dumpster, it's usually packed with chips. Some times their is: cookies, sunflower seeds, beef jerky, salsa, and on very rare occasions Brookside shit, stands, inflatable chairs. On a average trip I'll get a trash bag of chips, and some packs of cookies.

How often do you guys find stuff at staples?

 No.44553

>>44548

Jinteki guy here. I'll find something salvageable every other trip or so. Haven't gone in a while though, since I've got a steady income and too much computer equipment cluttering up my apartment. I'm not interested in consumer stuff anymore, really, and I'm not going to find enterprise discards around here.

Or rig your own one of those capacitors that fry shit via the USB hubs.
