Ahem, so I remember the two ways to spoiler text : ** and [ s p o i l e r ].
The main anti-heroine of "Mardock Scramble" is a former prostitute.
The viewer has to watch her get interviewed in a court of law and her reactions are not pleasant to watch.
The flashback sequences to her childhood experiences that motivated her are not pleasant.
But the real buzzkill was the fact that when I started watching, I was hoping that she would be a redeemable tragic hero. I was hoping that she would be able to get past her experiences and become a decent person.
The problem is that the story makes it clear that her encounters with evil have made her just as evil as all the people who raped her.
This protagonist encountered evil mostly in the form of getting raped, socially rejected, and coerced into prostitution.
However, whereas a hopeful tragedy holds up a chance at redemption, this heroine failed her moral test.
The one character who treats her like a human being is the magical mouse-thing that gives her Snark powers.
And how does she treat that character?
She makes the use of her superpowers equivalent to rape. She repeats the evil that was done to her. She takes the superpowers from the mouse-thing even though it tries to withdraw consent.
This is entirely realistic; there is no reason to believe that people are noble tragic heroes. But it's depressing.
