there are some good vpns like mullvad just do your research and you'll be alright. Tor is great, if you want to hide tor use from your isp there are some alternatives.

i2p is fine too.

private trackers give you some privacy, and you have to invest time, energy and resources into them. for the casual user I think VPNs are a good alternative.

You can use I2P without javascript just fine. You probably meant Java in which I2P is written.

Java =/= Javascript

That's completely separate issue.

And if you don't want to install Java either, you can use I2Pd.

Is there any point to using Freeware? Is it any better than Tor?

Dont use free services except Tor. Every free VPN or Proxy is selling you. How else do they pay the server rent?
