Although the system that powers it is pretty complicated, Champions includes enough stuff to make it useful as an anime simulator. You might need some drama points in it to make it better able to replicate the larger than life feel that anime heroes have.

Play-by-post.

Still decent - if not ideal - method of play, or completely bastardised format that you're better off not playing?

For argument's sake, let's say I'm talking about 3.5.

Pic unrelated.

 No.1276

Can't say it's a complete bastardization.

Can say that it's exceedingly far from ideal.

3.5 would need to be adjusted slightly to work play by post. How much depends on the forum and what it can do.

.../d20/ going to become a play by post forum now?

 No.1277

>>1276

> .../d20/ going to become a play by post forum now?

Actually I was just asking because the only games I could find to join were on Myth-weavers.

 No.1278

Play-by-post is just too slow-paced. I've tried it before. It died even faster than a regular game.

 No.1290

I've been running a play by post GURPS game, for a little over three years.

I have 7 players and we average about 8 posts a day, according to the stats provided by our forum.

Some days, when everyone is on, it moves along pretty fast, some days not so much.

But as long as your players are committed to checking in at least once a day, and making a post if they need to, then the format can work.

It is too slow to really replace the tabletop experience with friends. We recently had a combat that took two weeks to play out, since we only got through about 1 round a night.

It is the methadone to RPG-smack, but it has some advantages. As the GM, you are never really put on the spot. If you need to draw a map, or come up with a name or description, or craft the perfect dialogue, or whatever, you can take 5 minutes to do so, and nobody is actively waiting for you.

I'd never want play by post to be the only format I play, but it's a nice thing to do during the week between in-person game sessions with my RL group.

As for the system. I don't know if D&D (any edition) is a good match for the format. It would take you many many months to gain a level, if the GM is awarding XP by the book. Even in my GURPS game, I give about 5 times as many Character Points per adventure than I do in my RL games, since it takes us six months, or real time, to get through an adventure, and I want the players to see their characters improve on a more reasonable realworld time scale.

More like we decide the degree of variation for certain actions, and that determines how many fudge dice we roll. The more dice in a roll, the more the check's result can deviate from it's base average, either positively or negatively.

Contrast this with increasing variability with bigger dice, or using more of regular dice. Either of those methods requires adjusting the static value, or else higher variation = higher average.

 No.938

I like how Eclipse Phase did percentile

Roll under your percent skill, with doubles being a crit success or crit fail depending on your skill level (if you have 70 in a skill, 66,55,44,etc are all critical successes, while 77,88,99 are all crit fails.

in opposed checks you want to go as high as possible without going over your skill AND beat your opponents score if they didn't roll over their skill.

 No.1049

I enjoy a simple 2d6, it's outdated but works and I have the probabilities more or less memorized so fuck having to learn new things.

I like Dark Heresy's 2d10 system too, that was one of the better diceroll systems I've dealt with. Ironclaw's multiple die sides system looks really interesting as well, I'd like to try it.

 No.1062

>Roughly 10% of successes are crits

>Roughly 10% of failures are crits

That's really good.

>in opposed checks you want to go as high as possible without going over your skill AND beat your opponents score if they didn't roll over their skill.

Huh. So if your opponent has 25 and you have 50, there's a 75% chance the opponent fails completely and a 50% chance you fail completely, making for a 37.5% chance you both fail, a 87.5% chance at least one of you fails, a 50% chance exactly one of you fails, and a 12.5% chance you both succeed. Assuming you both succeed, there's a 50% chance you roll higher than your opponent could possibly roll, and below that it's 50/50 odds one way or the other, so a 75% chance you win if neither of you rolls over. The odds of that happening overall are 9.375%, while the chance of you rolling under while your opponent rolls over is 37.5%. All together, your chance of beating your opponent are 46.875%, a bit shy of 50%. Meanwhile your opponent has a 12.5% chance of rolling under while you roll over and a 25% chance of beating you if neither rolls over (3.125% overall) for a total of 15.625% chance of beating you. As stated above, there's a 37.5% chance you both fail, bringing the total to a nice even 100. You have exactly 3 times the chance your opponent does of winning and 1.25% the chance of neither winning. This gives us a whole ratio of you:them:neither 12:4:5 at skill level 50 and 25.

This sounds pretty great. I'm too tire to do it now, but I'd love to see how this works on non-flat distributions like 3d6.

 No.1289

I just use 3d6.

As a board, collaborate to design a board game using your boards name as a key element.

Rules

Game must be playable for 2-4 players.

Game must be a race (Snakes and Ladders), non-linear adventure/collect-a-thon (Talisman, Arkham Horror) or wargame (Shogun).

Game must not be a dungeon crawl (Hero Quest), resource gatherer (Catan) or property buy/trade (Monopoly) as a primary focus, but may use elements of these kinds of

games. Card Games and Tabletop Games that use a board (Munchkin Quest, Tabletop RPG's with a mat) do not count as board games for the purpose of this contest.

Game must have at least one static game board.

Game must primarily feature the board name as a major element.

Game must have no more than 200 pieces (dice, tokens, cards all count).

All content for the game must be submitted into threads (idea development process, strawpoll results, tokens, rules pdf etc) and the threads should be archived for

varification so one person doesn't just submit something they already had available.

Game must be completed before 1st December.

Context (why)

Board owner Me continues to do nothing about the state of the board and there is clearly a lot mixed feelings on whether people should stay and fight any shitposting

with holding the line and 'getting shit done' or if people should move on to another board with dedicated moderation. There is a lot of distrust right now, so

what better way to settle it than by proving which /tg/ can get shit done. This challenge will be posted on /tg/, /snb/, /d20/, /grognard/ and any other boards that

rose up during the spam as a shelter. If I forgot your board and you want to be involved, post it.

Just opening up a serious discussion into running more mature campaigns, not the FATAL style, fetish insertion, or magical realms stuff whe bitch about, but somewhere above the generic non-commital saturday morning cartoon style games I find a lot of GMs tend to do.

To illustrate my point I've included Lorne Malvo from Fargo. Great Malefactor character, manipulative, evil and great villain. Or Ramsay Bolton from Game of Thrones, who engages in rape, torture and wholesale sadism. Or just Game of Thrones in general, with the incest, betrayal, politics etc.

My point is that despite wanting to do a campaign that is a little more mature I seem to be stuck between the PG high fantasy or /d/ on any given day is how do we do more mature campaigns without stuffing it up? What should be and shouldn't be acceptable for the GM when running them? and what ideas and characters would/have you worked in your games?

That's actually pretty cool. I like to think of some matriarchal society based around "Holy fuck woman are goddamn important, if we don't have enough we die. Men kind of are easy to replace though." being disgusted by the idea of the society and kind of fear it cause it makes it so woman would lose power in her society.

I'll correct the guy you were talking to: The gender, ethnicity, sexual preferences, quirks, blood type, zodiac sign etc. of a character should remain undefined if it is not important to the story.

 No.1267

>>1265

As the anon you replied to, for everything except ethnicity I can agree. Ethnicity is as important to the story as what a character is wearing. That is, it's meaningless to the plot most of the time, but it can't just be ignored.

 No.1268

>>934

In a TRULY culturally medieval society, a character would never reveal they're trans or gay because they don't know what "trans" means, and because no one cares, and they probably don't either. It only really matters if someone has some reason to pay attention to you, e.g. how homosexuality is treated in Game of Thrones. Everyone knows, nobody cares because they've got far more important things to worry about, up until the character's homosexuality can be used against them. Then their enemies care. The same would go for crossdressing, probably the only medieval manifestation of transsexuality.

What is Tavern Tales

Tavern Tales is an incredibly rules light system that has a greater emphasis on roleplaying and creative license. The game encourages (and sometimes outright forces) you to work with the GM to make the world and story more interesting and involved.

The game does not use classes or races, but instead uses 'traits' and 'themes', which allow you to mix and match a diverse group of powers and reflavour them to suit your character.

Tavern Tales only uses four stats (Brawn, Finesse, Mind, Spirit) and uses a 3-d20 roll system for all checks, where you roll 3d20 and take the middle-most value as your result, thought sometimes modifiers make you take the higher or lower dice based on difficulty and traits.

Having played the game, its certainly a good introduction to tabletop gaming both as a GM (with advice and preparation) and for players not used to learning more comprehensive rulesets. Character creation for a new player can take about 30 minutes or longer, but once you know the system and have an idea in mind it takes only a few minutes.

An anon has been in touch with the creator and a pdf version is coming.

Here are examples of some of the traits in game to give an idea of how aspects of it play…

>Demolition Charge • Slow Action

>Describe how you create an item → Create a bomb and determine the trigger condition. When activated, it charges obviously and ominously for less than a minute (runes appear, a clock counts down, it glows red-hot, etc ) and then explodes, annihilating structures and brutally maiming creatures (or worse). Work with the GM to determine the explosion size.

>Lair • Slow Action

>Describe how you claim your lair → A piece of territory that you control becomes your lair. Gain creative license to slowly change the terrain and features of the lair (create web-strewn paths, clinging ice, pools Post too long. Click here to view the full text.

 No.338

This was posted up in the original /tg/ thread on this, but here's the traits you'd need to start play as the stereotypical necromancer lich:

Combat

>Undying

>Work with the GM to create a death condition (decapitated, destroyed phylactery, staked in the heart, etc). Unless you die under those conditions, gain creative license to reanimate within about 1 day to 1 week (the GM decides when) with full life. You are temporarily weakened (the GM decides how and for how long).

>If you die and don’t have this trait, you can work with your GM to permanently sacrifice something (memories, your humanity, stats, etc) and immediately gain this trait.

Exploration

>Ritual

>Tell the GM an effect you want to achieve through ritual magic (eternally seal a creature in a tomb, open a portal to another plane, make a magical effect permanent, etc). The GM must explain everything you have to do in order to complete the ritual (sacrifice rare items, join with other mages, visit a certain location, etc). If you perform the ritual and satisfy the requirements, gain creative license to achieve the effect.

Interaction

>Marshal Forces

>You can acquire unique allies through means that would otherwise be impossible. Work with your GM to determine the creature type, recruitment method, and limitations (build loyal robots that run on fuel, animate mindless zombies that crave flesh, call feral beasts that do as they please, etc).

You can realize a pretty wide variety of character concepts with this game, even at just the basic starting level.
