I've always been interested in this sort of stuff, but never really got around to actually try and play nor find anyone IRL to play with ;_;

What's a good place to start? What games/rulebooks are good for beginners?

 No.370

I've heard that D&D 5e is pretty streamlined and much better for beginners than the earlier versions. Fucking mainstream cucks

Some simpler games like Paranoia or AFMBE might also be good, or rules-light systems like FATE. Then you can work your way up to heavier rulesets with more mechanics.

 No.373

You should also try GURPS-lite, anon.

I'm actually in the same situation. Been watching vids about this and lurking /tg/ for a couple of weeks now, though somethings discussed just go over my head

Book/rule should't come before getting a group. Most systems have options that you may never use depending on what you want to play, for instance playing a Fighter in D&D/Pathfinder makes the entire magic chapters useless, which mean half the books but avoid playing with a powergaming Wizard/Druid/Cleric in 3.5/PF, or you'll be bored fast

Once you get two or three games in, most systems should be, if not mastered, at least understood enough.

Agreed that group should come before picking a system, but I wouldn't recommend D&D and especially not Pathfinder as your first.

More seriously, while I wouldn't either, the fact is it is the most represented choice, so it opens more doors (the fact it is a good thing is another discussion entirely). I do suggest 5E myself if possible on that front.

Pathfinder might open doors but there's brick walls behind all of them. Hope you brought a spoon.

I suppose it is dependant on which group you get into, I didn't have much problem myself. Then again, I can admit you sometimes find assholes who "play to win". If a player, that's boring, but you can deal with it long enough to at least get good relation with the rest of the team, if a GM, find another group FAST, don't turn back and aim for the head if it pursue you. If you first game is a 'Tomb of Horror' run, I wouldn't blame you for leaving the community forever.

I'm talking more about the density of Pathfinder and how hard it is to get into. If you're a beginner GM you're basically fucked; as a player I had to lean heavily on my group to learn how to play.

 No.428

>>419

Didn't have that problem, but maybe those years with AD&D are the reason I didn't find the transition that hard, so you are most probably right.

Which by the way make me think about how I learned the basic rules: video games. Back when the Genesis was a thing, 'Eyes of the Beholder', 'Buck Rogers, countdown to doomsday' and 'Warriors of the eternal sun' all used AD&D or derivated rules system, including ThAC0, preparing spells… so maybe something similar nowaday could be used as a stepping stone?

 No.429

>>428

Yeah, shit, I guess you could play some Baldur's Gate or Icewind Dale to get accustomed to tabletop mechanics.

That image always bugged me. The shadow is not naturally placed at all and looks like a complete photoshop. The head tilt implies they're not looking forwards, as they would be with a forward-facing camera. The hat is clearly meant to be a fedora, which if combined with their arm/stomach outline, means they're facing on almost a 90 degree angle.

Also, the duo's shadows are sharper than the taker's, despite being further away, and the taker's face is still lighter than their edgy black body and had… Despite the fact shadows shouldn't have color gradients.

Like, it could be real, maybe, I guess, but it looks so goddamn fake that it drives me nuts when I see it.

 No.502

>>500

Yeah, I see what you mean. That shadow could easily have been created with Photoshop just by fiddling with the brush tool and layer opacity.

> looks like a complete photoshop

It is a photoshop, I've seen the original.

Here's what it was before someone shopped in the fedora but the entire shadow is fake, photoshopped.
