Someone put it up on the public drive (again) and while it was written in 2008, a lot of it stills applies. Gives you an idea of how some people feel about the incoming students as well. It's suitably jaded (just like most people who've been here more than a year) but also honest.
This is a better home for it than the public drive though. It fits the mood at least.

Realistically, how fucked is everyone going to be for GAM 200 next fall semester, now that GAM 150 uses Zero, instead of having students make an engine in C?

Hi I use to attend Digipen years ago and I currently graduated with my Degree in Graphic Design and what I want to offer you is help with board, card games and instruction booklets.
I remember when I was a BAGD how difficult it was to due boards, cards and flashy instructions. I didn't know how to construct them in a way that would line up correctly or print out. Put it this way, it took me hours trying to make a grid for a board game and even longer to look right.
So if anyone needs help with their projects let me know and we can figure something out.

Freshman here, I found this board a bit before first semester started and the hate towards BAGD convinced me to switch (initially to BSCSGD now just BSCS). My dormies are badgers and god damn everything I hear about GAT classes sounds awful and the majority of badgers I meet are useless narcissistic "idea guys" with absolutely no skill or hope for the future. If every single one dropped out I would only feel happy for their sake. Apparently even Portnow told them that their life as a "game designer" will probably be shit when he came to speak. Also really liking the CS teachers, I can't imagine only learning scripting languages and having almost no actual knowledge of computers or art. And holy shit hearing other students talk about memes is unbearable (how has this John Cena shit not gotten old yet?)
Anyways the sound design program actually looks pretty good too, taking an intro to sound class and I like it a lot.
I'd say the biggest problems with this school are definitely the BAGD program, lack of business major/minor, and reddit autists it attracts.

freshman here and given what I saw on this board going into it I am pleasantly surprised by how much I like it here, especially the teachers and almost every non-BAGD student.
But fuck badgers though god damn they are annoying. 2 of my dormies are badgers and I don't mind one but the other embodies everything I can hate in a person: she is SJW, lazy, ignorant, full of herself, and all she does is complain about everything except herself. Also she's a full on biowarefag. I know its mean to want people to fail but I really hope her laziness gets the best of her so she has to drop out. I actually applied as a BAGD then switched to BSCSGD after coming to this board and now I'm just BSCS after seeing that I'd be critically analysing gone homo. Very happy with that decision.
What are some good clubs here? I just started in a 5E group (1 DM 3 players right now) in tabletop club and game design club was 10x better than the GAT class I went to before withdrawing. Also making a Dota club even though there's a MOBA club so I can get twice as many –pizzas– social experiences. If they let me I'd also be interested in making a Mead Appreciation club (if there isn't one already).

Yesterday, Claude finally moved all his R/C planes out of his office. He needed a moving van to do that. Also, he didn't do it: he had the security guard take care of it. I heard that they're going to be able to make 3 offices out of the space that used to be taken by the planes.

I'm not a DigiPen student, but I feel like in an alternate reality (where I tried harder in high school), I probably could have been. For a long time, I was a pretty firm believer in DigiPen. I just thought that it was the "legit" and "professional" gamedev school. For the Holcomb boardstravaganza GAT classes, it seems like you're assumed to be proficient with some sort of image software, despite never being given a class for it.
BFAs don't seem to know how to save files consistently for use as game assets, which is because they won't officially work on a game project at a game school until junior year, and their professors don't give a shit about preparing them for it.
Rtises go into Gam200 with only a sorry C engine with alpha engines bullshit, and are expected to have worked on it over the summer or shit it out immediately so their non-programming designers can actually start working (zero prototypes aside)

Zero Functionality Engine
I sincerely hope this is just my fucked up copy of Zero but I am getting fucking sick of re-importing files constantly because Zero can't manage things well and doesn't have a refresh option for sprites and textures. Literally every time I import a new texture it breaks all my particle emitters that use a previous texture. I'm guessing it has an array of textures and adding new ones fucks up where the old ones are found. HOWEVER I am using the SpriteSource.Find function so this should not happen. Worst part is I can't update to a new build because they took out Python. 10/10 good plan. enjoy the motherfucking catalina wine mixer

Story time.Tell me YOUR shitty room mate stories.
Freshman year, instead of getting into Digipen housing I take a gander at the room mate/apartment housing site.
Find a place.
Fucking ShadowBrook. Don't know it at the time but the place is a mass of mold and crap with a fuckton of children that like to scream at all hours.
Decide to take a look. Price is all-right. Own bedroom. Own bathroom. Basement level, but it looks ok.
Meet roommate. ( We are both female.) We will call her E. E's parents own the apartment.
E is a classic digipenner. Overweight, smells, never washes hair. Wears same outfit every day. Dirty pokemon shirt. Baggy shorts. Never seen without baseball cap.
E's parents pay for her everything. She has a new car, gets a grand a month for 'spending money', all tuition paid for out of pocket.
When I first meet E she seems OK enough. Quiet. Doesn't make eye contact. Sort of awkward but I can deal.
After first week of school, things quickly degrade.
Apartment starts to become messy. It is very clear that E has a bit of a problem.
E has her own room, but absolutely refuses to use it except for sleeping. She is always out in he living room, playing DOTA on her laptop and watching TV.
E has this disgusting armchair recliner that she rots in whenever she is not sleeping or at school.
From 8 AM to 2 AM. DOTA in the armchair.
E eats in this as well, and will not get up to throw away her food/garbage/anything. Starts to pile up in a circle of garbage around her chair. Soda bottles, chip bags, candy wrappers, pints and pints and pints of ice cream.
Two weeks in.
Pile has now spread to sofa. Flies starting to accumulate.

Never does.
One month in.
You can now audibly hear buzzing in the living room from flies. E pretends not to notice. Will not let me open any windows in the apartment. Including the blinds. I take out the garbage as much as I can. Can see flies crawling over her sometimes while she plays games. She seems not to care. One day, when E is away at school. I clean.
I clean fucking everything. Vacuum. Scrub. Mop.
E comes home.
Global fucking meltdown.

E's diet has piddled itself down to exactly this.
1.) Moose-Tracks Ice cream, aprox. 1 gallon every two to three days.

E's hair has started to fall out from what I can only assume is a total lack of any physical movement and malnutrition. She drives her car the short walk to school. Little tumbleweeds of greasy hair all around apartment. Keeps wearing baseball hat to cover it up. Can see bald spot whenever she is not wearing it at home. She is barely 20 years old.
E has now started sleeping out in the living room. Catch her masturbating out there multiple times. Pretend not to notice.
E sometimes sneaks into my room to 'pet' my stuffed animals.
Had a short fling with a guy near the end of the semester. E would just knock and knock on my door and try to open it during private time. "WHAT ARE YOU GUYS DOING IN THERE?"
E was super hard to live with.
It was always a battle keeping her/her mess out of my room.
Moved out as soon as the year was over.
She has failed a few classes since then but I'm not sure if she still goes here.

I'm an RTIS junior who has never knowingly interacted with a BFA or BAGD, so I have absolutely no perspective on the art side of this school. What sort of entry-level jobs do BAGDs find? Surely there aren't many companies interested in pure designers? Do they get hired as artists as well? 2015 death toll

Does anyone else have a favorite "farting chair" in Edison? Whenever I'm having a particularly gassy day, I like to pick out a specific one of those hard-plastic chairs that have the fabric bottom, and sit in it while I work. I fart in it over and over, and eventually it starts to absorb my odor. It's nice because the familiar smell makes me feel comfortable, like I'm in a cocoon of safety. I marked it with a little scratch on the back of the plastic so I always know which one it is, and can get it back later, without anyone else being able to spot it.So, what kind of comfort zones do you guys put yourselfs into?

This might seem childish, but the reason I'm leaving the school is because I no longer feel proud of my work here. I didn't come here to make anything revolutionary, but I wanted to make games I could write home about and say 'I made this'. I haven't felt that in GAM since my first semester, GAT since 210, and not at all in my cs courses.24 days left.

Any good roommate stories from housing people?I had three morons to deal with, a dude who wouldn't stop jacking off while I was trying to sleep, an idiot who thought running his laptop through the dryer would be a good way to dry it, and a prissy overpriveliged dude who thought everything had to accommodate him because of his rich parents. (I wasn't much better, all this stress plus DigiPen plus a death in my family left me with a short fuse)
One of my favorite stories about these idiots is that jackoff loved to cook awful burgers. He submerged then in oil in the frying pan, and then seared the outside, leaving the inside completely raw. One time he was cooking and noticed smoke coming out of the pan. Logically, he concluded that water put out fire, so he put the getting pan under the sink. I looked up from the couch when I noticed an orange glow from the kitchen, to see jack off staring dumbfounded at a 6 foot column of flames. Nobody was hurt, but prissy starts screaming and whining, I explain to jackoff that we have a fire extinguisher, and then go to bed after double checking my smoke detector in case he tried to cook again that night.

This morning I came to school and found that i couldn't connect to the internet through the ethernet cable. I went to IT, and it turns out they blocked me for pirating a movie. This would normally be ok, I mean, I did it so I deserve it, but the problem is that I did it last year and was just now blocked. And we manage to pass, get nice grades and make something with our lives besides being all-day-long in front of a screen.
Does anyone else run into the issue, where people give you bad looks because of being fit?
Or maybe because they know you like to drink / smoke some weed?
Or because you actually shower and use colony/deodorant on the mornings?
Or because you are able to speak about sports, girls, politics and so on with anybody?

Hey guys, now that this board is being linked to on peoples' Facebooks and stuff, along with us just hitting >>1000 today, I figured that now would be as good of a time as any to restate the purpose of this board.
This board was created due to student frustrations with the way the Redmond campus of DigiPen Institute of Technology is run. However, I hope I have made it very clear that, outside of rule violations ( http://8ch.net/digipen/rules.html ), I have not done any tone-policing or editing or deleting of any threads or posts, whether I agree with them or not. This is meant to be a platform for open, anonymous discussion of any DigiPen campus, DigiPen as a whole, and the various day-to-day problems that students at the school run into.
Rule violations will not be tolerated, but anything else is fair game. 8chan is not a person, and /digipen/ is not a person. It is tempting to think of them as people, because everyone is anonymous and you can't necessarily discern who is who (especially since the Unique ID system falls apart because many people post from within DigiPen, and 8chan identifies them as "the same person"). Keep in mind that people here have many different beliefs and backgrounds. Just a simple glance at the "secret bathroom" thread should be enough to prove that.
So now I'm going to open this to any questions or concerns that anyone has about the board or whatever. I'm open to hearing what anyone has to say.

It's the worst of both worlds, though - its first half is pretty much RTIS classes with enough GAT to make the BSGDs feel like they're "designing." At least with "Computer Science" in the full degree title they're hireable as devs, since neither they nor the BAGDs are getting entry-level design jobs.

Did the Sound Design degree even get finished before the ADHD staff moved onto starting the BSCS degree? All three are really untested degrees, so I doubt there's much to go on. Nobody on my GAM team actually -knew- that the MSD students actually did more than just produce assets. On the other hand, they seem better-connected with 200-level projects than BFA's, so maybe the program isn't going to have the same situation as the Art Ghettos in Edison and Tesla.

So I'm transferring outa' the BAGD program after this semester after seeing what a shitty shallow program it is.
It seems like everyone else in the program either has their head firmly planted up their ass, holding an ignorant/smug view of game production, or is a fucking mouth-breather who “wans do make vi-eh-oh gams, duuuuur!”.
I’m currently caught between BSGD and RTIS. I know that RTIS is lock, stock and fucking kick-ass in their education, but what about BSGD? Is BSGD a valid program or just a small step up from BAGD retardation?
A few years back I spoke to a local news station about the horrors of Digipen. They said that without other students coming forward or evidence they couldn't make a story.
When I tried talking to other students they were all against it because they feared reprisal from Digipen.
Would anyone be interested in talking to the news if I could set it up? anonymously of course.
Digipen has a lot of dirt on them they don't want leaked.
They're the kind of entity that if legal action was taken against them I'm sure they'd try to settle out of court because they don't want their dirty laundry aired.

Absolutely locale number 1. Only place on campus I've gotten laid, plus, the privacy of the solo bathroom on the second floor affords you the ability to spend however much time you need. I've spent entire 90 minute breaks between classes in there just poopin' and readin'.

i live in a world where the executives of my program don't understand the industry my degree is designed to get me into, i go to a game school where i don't actually get credit for working on a fucking video game team until semester 5, adjuncts are often better than tenured professors, and it depends.wat god damn program am i
PROTIP: Take CS180 in the Spring semester. Even if you're a BSGD or whatever, just do it, take it Semester 3, don't wait until Semester 4.
What you don't realize is that CS120 students who get As get to take CS180 early, semester two.
This means that your class is full of people who not only got As, but also consciously decided to take CS180 early. This doesn't automatically make you a tryhard, but holy shit, there are so many tryhards in this class that just ask questions constantly just to sound smart. If you would just let Mead fucking teach you what he's going to teach you, maybe your question would be answered, but no, you feel the need to pipe up constantly like a sack of shit all the god fucking damn time.
BSGD students, it's like a GAT class. No, seriously. Today in class there was one guy who raised his hand to ask a question, and before Mead was done answering it, had his hand in the air again, and then there was this OTHER guy who crossed "the GAT threshold" of just blurting a question out loud without raising his hand at all.

How to fix GAM
Look, okay. I'm going to lay it all out. I've solved how to fix GAM classes and make them not total teach-yourself-how-to-make-a-video-game hot garbage bullshit.—
GAM100:
GAM100 is pretty good as it is. Yeah it sucks that if you don't know programming, it can be a pain, but whatever man, it's super easy to learn how to do basic shit with Zilch and make a game. (Side note: Zilch sucks shit and is the worst language, that's another thread for another time though.) You learn how to deal with teammates, team issues, how to scope your game, etc., in a relatively inconsequential manner. Definitely add a "how to use git" week or something, but overall, GAM100 is not a huge problem.

GAM150:
DigiPen, for the love of God, revert to the old GAM150, but improve it, instead of having students use Zero to make their second game in a row. GAM150 was a great way to get me to learn how game engine concepts work and further solidify how to work as a team. Maybe give a lecture on advanced git usage, like branches and shit, I dunno.
After they revert to forcing you to make a game in C, SPEND TIME AND MONEY INTO MAKING ALPHA ENGINE GOOD. Don't call it Alpha Engine, also; call it libalpha or something, it's a fucking library not a goddamn engine.
Make libalpha modular. Make it so that setting up basic gameplay is super easy, just basic function calls. You got your basic game update loop, your object manager, whatever, make it really easy to get going making a game with libalpha. Alpha Engine is like 75% of the way there, just focus on honing it and making it good while documenting the fucking header files and removing those fucking #ifdefs for Android. (What the fucking shit? Who started adding Android support to Alpha Engine, before making it better?)
Then, once that's done, make a rubric that has very, VERY basic gameplay requirements, with most of the requirements being about replacing the functionality of libalpha with your own code. Give a lecture (maybe this is CS230 now? I have no fucking clue) on how to implement each part. How to make a game loop. How to make a framerate controller. How to make a state machine. Etc., etc.
Grade the projects not on how good of games they are, because fucking GAM150 is mostly RTIS and a few BSGDs, but instead on how you implemented the logic of what you learned into your Baby's First Game Engine. Give points for trying crazy shit, like packing your resources into a single file, or making a really nice asset pipeline.
And above all else: don't make it so that we either need previous programming experience or three meal tickets from attending GAM150 Club in order to pass the fucking class. Teach game engine concepts, and make us execute on them.

GAM200/GAM250:
Add a new feature to Zero that allows users to make projects with something called "Zero Core". Zero Core disables all the crazy advanced features of Zero, retaining only the most core features. This way, game designers (BAGDs and BSGDs, if they so desire) can spend the first semester prototyping and eventually building their game in Zero.
Apparently, Chris Peters will give you the Zilch compiler if you ask him. That's awesome. Make this shit mandatory! Make it so the game designers are designing the game in Zero, and the programmers are basically creating their own stripped-down version of the Zero Engine (not the editor, just the underlying engine) for the first semester. This way, there's no bullshit about having to figure out how to design and make an editor on top of designing and building an engine. The designers just get to use ZeroEditor to make the game, and the programmers get to implement the engine backend.
Give bonus points for engine programmers who not only implement the Zero Core features, but go above and beyond and add cool shit like shader support and dynamic sound shit and whatever the fuck else they want. Make the GAM200 lectures all about component-based design, both for programmers and designers. GAT240 has a lot of this, and the programmers never get to hear it, unless they're BSGD.

I'm only a sophomore so I have no perspective on GAM300/GAM350, but I don't see why it can't stay the same. At this point, you'd have an awesome engine that you built in your sophomore year, because DigiPen actually TAUGHT YOU HOW TO MAKE IT, and now you're customizing it further and adding whatever the hell other cool shit you want to it. You want JavaScript instead of Zilch? Sure, why not, integrate V8 or something. You want Oculus Rift support? Go ahead, and get a ton of bonus points for using it amazingly.
I don't see why this is so hard, other than because a.) it's different from what the current status quo is, and b.) it would actually take time and money to fix, which is something that DigiPen fucking loathes.
Teaching yourself how to make a game engine sucks, DigiPen can do better, they should just fucking hire me to make decisions like this, this is easy as shit. You have Chris Peters and the ZeroEngine team on staff, why are you not imparting their knowledge of engine design to the programmers? Why do designers have to spend the first half of GAM200 writing code in Zero, hoping that one day the programmers will figure out how to implement some sort of scripting language, so they can eventually put their skills to use in making the game rad?
Oh, and make the BFA program more like the sound design programs. I know you have to teach them art shit, but let them be like the sound students and work on game teams almost immediately. At least GAM200. Come the fuck on.
My solution makes every degree program involved in GAM feel better, and will make the games produced from DigiPen better, which is what DigiPen wants, right? Not only will it facilitate actual fucking learning, it will make for better, more awesome games that can be shown on the TVs all around school. Isn't that what they want? Isn't that what we want?
