Can we stop with the goddamn social media screencaps from people reacting to the board? It doesn't take much to find out who posted what if you're decently connected on whatever social network, and it's kind of lending towards talking shit about specific current DigiPen students.

also, people need to stop fucking posting about this board on social media. like, when you post about this board publicly, do you honestly not think it's going to get back here?

So here's my opinion:

If you post something on the Internet, in a public place, and some anonymous person posting it in a public place posts a screenshot of it, removing your name and personally-identifiable information, then there's no harm done, right? The post was publically-viewable from the beginning. The person who was posting it should've known that it was public to the entirety of the Internet, and the person who was reposting it here followed the rules and removed any personally-identifiable information from it. It's like seeing someone doing something dumb in real life, like holding a "GOD HATES FAGS" sign or urinating in public, taking a picture, mosaicing their face, and posting it online. Is there any harm in that, if they were doing it in a public place?

I personally don't think so, but I want to know what you guys think.

Also, with regards to posting links to /digipen/ on social media: I can't enforce it, and why should I? People can do whatever they please on other websites, and because of the anonymous nature of 8chan (I can't even see what IP address you're posting from, just a hash), I have no means to determine who is posting links to /digipen/ threads on other websites. And even if I could crack down on that, why should I?

I personally think that posting links to /digipen/ threads on social media is a relatively poor idea in most situations, because it can reflect on you personally later in life (especially professionally), but I don't pretend to have any authority over anyone who does it.

What do you guys think?

I'm curious why people are talking about 8chan on social media, when browsing the threads in person is clearly meant to be a team bonding experience.

Posting something publicly is fine, that's your prerogative. If you're linking to /digipen/ from your facebook or wherever, go for it. Obviously /digipen/ can't stop that.

However, I do think there's harm in us going and trying to "bite back" when someone goes "Look what 8chan said about meeeee" or whatever. Unless I'm mistaken, I assume this to be a safe place for people unhappy with DigiPen to go let off some steam, not to go mock tumblrs and tumblrettas and people on Facebook who think that because someone said that it reminds them of a dictatorship when the school is run by a faceless dude whose word is always undisputed law. It's just a toxic knee-jerk reaction to someone being shitty about someone angrier being equally shitty, and then everything festers and we get an explosion like the tumblr thread.

>Unless I'm mistaken, I assume this to be a safe place for people unhappy with DigiPen to go let off some steam,
You're right that this was the original reason for why I made the board, but I decided to not let my personal opinion intrude when codifying the rules. This is why I made the rules the way I did, so that discussion remains basically about DigiPen in some way, without mentioning any current students' names or doxxing anyone in any way. If people want to talk about why DigiPen is great, they're more than welcome to do so. I should write it in the rules as an afterthought, but I never tone-police anything on here at all. I see that a lot of subreddits and 8chan boards have moderators that delete anything that they personally disagree with, and I've made it a personal mission to never do this myself. Just today there have been about a dozen posts that I've actively disagreed with, but I've never deleted a single one. I've occasionally deleted posts when a user posted it in the wrong thread and posted again saying as much, but that's about it, as far as dealing with things that aren't rule violations.

So while your opinion about what should and shouldn't be posted on this board is a valid one (and I may or may not agree with you), as of right now, all discussions that currently exist on this board are perfectly valid in the eyes of the rules.

If you or anyone else has suggestions for how the rules can change, I'd be more than happy to hear them. The rules are not set in stone, and I want to create a place where people can feel safe discussing their school and their lives at it anonymously, and I want to improve it for its users wherever I can.

Poor phrasing on my part - how about "a safe place for people to discuss DigiPen" whatever that discussion may be?

9b3a13 No.1655

>>1653
Yep, pretty much! Again, as far as I can tell, I've done a good job of writing and enforcing rules to achieve this, but I'm perfectly willing to listen to suggestions.

There's a good chance that I'll make a Google Forms poll thing soon to get a feel for how the 25-35 people who post here feel, but again, just post your suggestions or concerns, but keep in mind that in order to enact your ideas, they need to be written as concrete rules, and those concrete rules shouldn't detract from possible discussion.

As an example: say I enact a rule banning discussion of anyone's social media postings. Then say some non-DigiPen student, say, a CEO of a company or something, says something publicly about DigiPen. Discussion of it wouldn't be allowed, then!

This is why I spend a lot of time thinking about the possible ramifications of each rule I write for the board, and try to keep them as conservative as possible, to allow as much discussion as possible.

But again, suggestions and opinions are more than welcome. I cannot emphasize that enough.

Is it really that bad though? Is it bad for people on this board to react to somebody posting on facebook? If you're going to be stupid enough to make a social media post for all of your friends to see, some of which use this board, and act surprised when people start calling you out or sending you private messages, then you deserve it. Twitter blowups work the same way and, in some sense, how people are handling this is an excellent exercise in social media management. If you're posting on an anonymous board and bitching about things, well have fun with that. It is unlikely to ever be under scrutiny by the public anytime soon because of the general nature of an anonymous board. On the flip side however if you're a named individual who is actively linking to and publicly denouncing this group, what does that say about you and your use of social media as well as your vulnerabilities?

To social media users: On this board, each and every one of us is a faceless entity. When you're on social media, by making posts like some of these screenshotters, that person has just put themselves on a pedestal for everyone to either praise or shame, and it seems like public shaming has been the popular item on the menu as of late. Recently, I saw a student break down in the cafeteria because of making a facebook post about this group, talking shit, and then getting bombarded with hate mail afterwards. That is their fault, not ours. They've singled themselves out and now people are giving some of them a hard time and those people might be board users or not. Everybody could learn a thing or two from Adam Orth and his infamous fuck-up. This is like that but on a much smaller scale but we're also a much smaller school. You guys do the math. It's basically like playing with fire.

10ac6e No.1658

I had to make an addendum. Don't be that guy that actually tries to harass people because of stupid stuff like this. That's never a good idea.

Yeah, but if we're constantly going "Look at this brown-nosing piece of shit," it won't be long before every legitimate complaint shared here gets ignored because it's the board where people go to anonymously mock non-anonymous students.

That said, I'm just one person and I don't have much stake in this game, other than hoping that DigiPen loses its accreditation so that I can get a refund since I'm leaving for a normie college. Do what you will.

As if people can't the difference between valid complaints and shit posting.

Shit posting will always be a thing. People do it to burn off stress and is harmless. Welcome to the Internet.
