When you play games, pay attention to how they do different things. How do they guide the player through a level? What do they do that are both aesthetically pleasing and highly functional? How do all aspects of the game lend to a "fun" experience?
Yeah, the biggest problem with the Game Design program is the 1.5 years of board game design. They will argue that it's all the same medium, but that's bs, we're no more the same medium as board games than we are of movies.
The higher level GAT classes get better. Most of what I got out of the first 1.5 years was some pretty good tips on how to write a rulebook, which actually does translate fairly well. But, that was all of like 2 or 3 weeks of GAT210.
