Realistically, how fucked is everyone going to be for GAM 200 next fall semester, now that GAM 150 uses Zero, instead of having students make an engine in C?

Is GAM 150 Club going to become GAM 200 Prep Club? I can't imagine GAM 200 getting nerfed at all, it seems like it's just going to be a massive "fuck you drop out now" for many people who either didn't have the foresight to tinker with engine development Spring/Summer 2016.

Or wait… was GAM 150 already using Zero in Spring 2015? I can't keep up with all the changes they keep making to early-game RTIS/BSGD.

d06c2d No.3469

They fucked the entire 2014 and 2015 cohort.

Drop out while you still can.

They're too busy trying to acquire new students instead of taking care of the ones they already have.

They don't give a fuck about you or your future, just your wallet.

So 2014 had to use Zero for GAM 150 too, then? How has GAM 200 this semester been going for sophomore teams? (NOT talking about the BAGD GAM class, I mean specifically the teams that presumably have to write an engine in C++ and have probably been even more lost and reliant on upperclassmen and the Internet than they have in the past.)

Yes, it's been very hard on everyone. Most people barely have their heads above water.

As I said, this school doesn't give a fuck about you after you paid for freshman year. Only reason I'm still here is student loans.

Run. They are going to throw you under the fucking bus.

f8d2db No.3472

All I hear is "The school doesn't care", but they're trying to make it better, and in turn created a weird situation. Now BAGDs are supposed to use Zero, BSCS majors use Alpha, and BSGDs can choose. It is annoying trying to get into the proper section, but the choice is nice. Doug seems to care at least a little bit.

f8d2db No.3473

(But I love how OP makes a mad rant without even knowing anything about GAM150's current status).

Way ahead of you, and I even was able to bail after two years and completely avoid loans. I had to dump the entirety of my long-term savings to do so, but whatever, completely worth it in the long run.

>>3473

I was asking a question dude, chill out. I know you want to defend your school to the death and all but calm down man.

And if the school is "trying to make it better", how can you recommend DigiPen to applicants? If I had been looking to enroll this year and someone told me about how everything's been in flux for the past few years as they struggle to figure out what works, I definitely would not have invested my personal savings in enrolling.

Maybe your family has more money to burn than mine did, though!

this, and if I understand this correctly, using alpha engine is a bit easier than starting from scratch.

Either way, first semester RTIS courses haven't prepared me at all for what I'm being told I have to do next semester.

>BSGDs can choose.

Lol, the GAM department considers us RTIS and BSCS students but conviently forgets that we spend time making board games instead of taking the programming courses we need.

810845 No.3478

>>3477

Don't forget that our board games are supposed to be as good as the bagds' despite not having as much time!

Why haven't you guys dropped out or changed degree programs yet? Nobody cares about BSGDs. You don't get sympathy from fellow students in other degree programs, and your professors care about you as little as is legally possible.

491690 No.3480

BAGD's are required to take a multitude of art classes in addition to their CS and GAT classes, not to mention random one-off classes like film.

Everyone is busy, it's not unique to any program. I know plenty of RTIS that get straight A's and don't typically have to work on the weekends.

491690 No.3481

>>3467

The reason you are using Zero Engine now is because BAGD's weren't fully included in game projects until the last two years. They tried separating them completely, and it resulted in a bunch of elitist tools that are more interested in making particle effects than fun games.

The RTIS and BSGD's were also complaining because they were forced to build an engine before they were taught how to do so. Rightfully so, as that's an ongoing problem this school has.

So now they are trying to keep the degrees together so that there are always people thinking about making GAMES and not just tech. I can't yet comment on how successful it has been, we will see at the end of the year if there are any games from the Sophomores that are actually fun to play, but they do seem to be concentrating more on making games rather than just tech.

Alpha Engine was throwing people into the deep end of the pool and forcing them to swim or drown. Theoretically your classes should be giving you that information, but…well…welcome to DigiPen!

I still feel like Alpha Engine had the right idea, it was just poorly implemented.

If Alpha Engine was anywhere near as polished as Zero is, and if CS 230 was made into an actually useful class, I think GAM 150 was fine the way it was in Spring 2014. Alpha Engine sucks ass though.

Zero is pretty fucking awesome, and some teams have used its code to add Zilch support to their games. This is the structure GAM needs! This should be mandatory!

If DigiPen actually cared about students learning, instead of just throwing them into a pit and letting them figure out how to make a game on their own, they would actually try to put structure to GAM, but they don't, it's all completely free-form.

263142 No.3489

>>3482

It was fine. It did it's purpose of being a shitty graphics wrapper with people requesting a new thing to be added every week. Eventually it wouldve reached the point of 'completion'.

What was the problem with gam150 wasn't alpha. It wasn't even making a game entirely in C. It was how to make a game. Hell there wasn't even anything wrong with CS230. It's the timing of everything is way off which makes the course completely pointless or suffer making a game weeks late in which you feel like a twat during presentations. With Zero being used that just means now it is a completely pointless class.

The change wasn't for the sake of structure. It was for the degree that the school is trying to create, BAGD.

Everything could have been solved, well not for BAGD, if they just you know used game lecture for teaching how to make a simplistic engine rather than talking about nonsense that you don't give a shit about since it's so high level.

e15cb1 No.3543

It seems like they fixed it (or repaired it to how it was before), GAM150 used zero last year but all CS students except for biscuits have to use Alpha for it.
