Documentaries About Africa

This is a thread for all things Africa. I'll start it with Africa Addio, a 1966 film about the end of colonialism in Africa by Gualtiero Jacopetti and Franco Prosperi.

This is the unedited Italian version with english subtitles. The American version, Africa: Blood and Guts, was heavily edited and mistranslated to be more politically correct.

Have you taken the brown pill yet, mateys?

it's a tough pill to swallow! The brown pill was founded in 1999 by Sir Reginald Brownpill, who presents and narrates the attached video.

Forget red and blue pills, brown pills are the way of the future.

Video related. Please leave your questions, comments, and concerns below about this radical new paradigm of thinking!

Suggest cities documentaries

I would like to watch documentaries related to cities. From urban theories, history of urbanism, history of this or that city (if you know a good doc about your city, please post), urban economy, local foods, local people, real estate development, etc. Anything about particular cities and their history or people to tecnical stuff surrounding cities such as urban economy and urbanism, but I'm particularly interested in stuff related to economy, cities and economy.

I have this series of documentary here, I'm posting the google link because some episodes you won't find in Youtube. It's a very shitty documentary overall, it explains very little about the city, the people they interview are retarded and all episodes are basically "muh future global metropolis" and it has a lefty tone overall, it's basicallly just a bit deeper than your average tourism agency promotional video.

Girl Model

Girl Model is an excellent and shocking documentary about a model scout and the predatory practices of the modelling world. I think it is on Netflix. The process of the model scouting is shocking but so is the model scout they profile. Just haunting.

Any other documentaries about the fucked up world of fashion? There is one from the (early 2000's?) that I want to see that I can't remember the name of?

Hello, /doc/. I just wanted to let you know that I'm the new board owner of >>>/kind/, and I'd appreciate it if you'd take the time to drop in and say hello. It's not really devoted to the discussion of topics pertaining to documentaries/film, but I think kindness is or should be a virtue valued by all, irrespective of our interests or hobbies!

Check out this thread >>>/kind/134 and tell us about your day.

Roger Scruton's Why Beauty Matters

https://vimeo.com/112655231

Philosopher Roger Scruton presents a provocative essay on the importance of beauty in the arts and in our lives.
In the 20th century, Scruton argues, art, architecture and music turned their backs on beauty, making a cult of ugliness and leading us into a spiritual desert.
Using the thoughts of philosophers from Plato to Kant, and by talking to artists Michael Craig-Martin and Alexander Stoddart, Scruton analyses where art went wrong and presents his own impassioned case for restoring beauty to its traditional position at the center of our civilization.

BBS: The Documentary
>Long before the Internet escaped from the lab, connected the planet and redefined what it meant to use a computer… In the Summer of 2001, Jason Scott, a computer historian wondered if anyone had made a film about these BBSes. They hadn't, so he decided he would.
>our years, thousands of miles of travelling, and over 200 interviews later, "BBS: The Documentary", a mini-series of 8 episodes about the history of the BBS, is now available. Spanning 3 DVDs and totalling five and a half hours, this documentary is actually eight documentaries about different aspects of this important story in the annals of computer history.

Baud introduces the story of the beginning of the BBS, including interviews with Ward Christensen and Randy Suess, who used a snowstorm as an inspiration to change the world.
Sysops and Users introduces the stories of the people who used BBSes, and lets them tell their own stories of living in this new world.
Make it Pay covers the BBS industry that rose in the 1980's and grew to fantastic heights before disappearing almost overnight.
Fidonet covers the largest volunteer-run computer network in history, and the people who made it a joy and a political nightmare.
Artscene tells the rarely-heard history of the ANSI Art Scene that thrived in the BBS world, where art was currency and battles waged over nothing more than pure talent.
HPAC (Hacking Phreaking Anarchy Cracking) hears from some of the users of "underground" BBSes and their unique view of the world of information and computers.
Compression tells the story of the PKWARE/SEA legal battle of the late 1980s and how a fight that broke out over something as simple as data compression resulted in waylaid lives and lost opportunity.
No Carrier wishes a fond farewell to the dial-up BBS and its integration into the Internet.

It's really cool and gives you a dive into pre-internet culture

Post your favorite tech related docus as well anons!

The Deepest Place On Earth

The Kola Superdeep Borehole (Russian: Кольская сверхглубокая скважина, Kolskaya sverkhglubokaya skvazhina) is the result of a scientific drilling project of the Soviet Union in the Pechengsky District, on the Kola Peninsula. The project attempted to drill as deep as possible into the Earth's crust. Drilling began on 24 May 1970 using the Uralmash-4E, and later the Uralmash-15000 series drilling rig. A number of boreholes were drilled by branching from a central hole. The deepest, SG-3, reached 12,262 metres (40,230 ft) in 1989 and still is the deepest artificial point on Earth.

Napoleon Bonaparte - 1812 Road To M

1812 Napoleon's Road to Moscow is a powerful record of one of history's greatest military disasters. Featuring dramatized reconstructions, stunning period imagery and the latest 3-D computer graphics, the program follows the dramatic course of events, including the Battle Of Bordino and the cruel 'Retreat From Moscow' which claimed over half a million lives. The program also draws extensively on spectacular scenes from the Oscar-winning Russian film War and Peace.
