I'm really gonna miss him. I can't stop listening to the S9 soundtrack.

 No.100837

>>100833

>You're also right about series 8, it was a misstep that got Capaldi off to a bad start, but more importantly it managed to trigger a negativity bias in the fandom that is still present. That's how, even after series 9 was so well received overall, there are still people saying nonsense like Capaldi was held back by shitty writing.

I think that "negativity bias" is a real thing. It's hung over 12's era.

The mystifying thing to me are the people who say Series 10 is when the writing got so much better. Maybe the finale makes all the other beginning S10 eps look more exciting?

 No.100838

 No.100843

>>100838

>"Old man Capaldi" didn't sell.

I think it was less that, and more making 12 initially very spiky, combined with also doing a deep dive on Clara Oswald's flaws. I think that left some people with no characters to see as "likable" or "heroic", as Series 8 was less about protagonists being aspirationally moral, than in 2 people working with each other in spite or because of their flaws, and being heroic in spite of that. There was no moral judgment ascribed to 12 and Clara by the show itself, even when 12 called a dead man's corpse "the top layer" or Clara tried to blackmail 12 to save her dead boyfriend. That lack of moral judgment for characters doing flawed things made people feel like they were just following unlikable people, especially considering this was a "family show."

 No.100844

>>100843

Well I was speaking more in terms of merchandising, but what you said is very true as well. Capaldi was like C. Baker 2.0 - suddenly here's this "edgy" Doctor coming off one of the kindest ones, and it was pretty jarring.

I almost sort of kinda agree. The only reason we escaped this was Moffat's sheer force of will. Still hoping Chibnall will do something interesting with Gallifrey in his next series, eg a takeover by the Sisterhood of Karn.

Right there with you in expecting some implausible shit to happen at the end, eg the little girl snapping back and sassily getting the questions right. It seems real enough.

>>100212

Neat question; I like the idea. The Doctor has done the "I remember that, back when I was shorter / wore a scarf / whatever" schtick enough times, but I'm a big sucker for the idea that regeneration turns a Time Lord into an alternate version of themselves that would've survived whatever it is that made them regenerate, so I'll stick with your idea.

Lots of people on Tumblr are pretty upset about this.

And since we're doing critical Shit Trips hot takes now …

Good, interesting posts. I really loved Shit Trips 2.5; it has a ton of great stories and the work that went into the linking narrative is astonishing. I believe Shit Trips will continue, but the trendline we've seen over the last 3 anthologies will continue in the direction predicted in ExBookclubanon's post. That's Not A Bad Thing, but it's definitely a divergence from its origins, and that's worth recognizing.

Today on Tumblr I used the tag "aesthetic decay" for the first time. It's not the best word for the phenomenon – in particular, "decay" has far too negative a connotation – but I think it captures the spirit of the issue, where something evolves past the principles that were originally behind it, and some people feel alienated as a result.

"a time for heroes" is directionally identical to "it's about time". They both imply some greater political need justifying doctor who's existence - and that's a good thing!

 No.100969

>>100968

I think the subtext of "It's about time" leans more on the female Doctor. "We need a pillar of hope in these times" and "This Doctor is a beacon of hope, unity, and inclusion in these divided times", however (both things Chibnall has more or less said), are explicitly attempts to position Doctor Who as an antidote to real-world problems.

Summary of Boyd Hilton's PilotTV podcast 'review':

Jodie is fizzy and positive, like a grounded, less whimsical version of Matt Smith's Doctor. Also like an action hero, especially when she is given a big action piece to do in the episode and does it well.

Bradley Walsh is the secret weapon of the episode/series.

The episode is emotional and moving.

https://www.theverge.com/2018/3/20/17130056/telltale-games-developer-layoffs-toxic-video-game-industry

From March, reads like it could be from this week though right? They knew this was coming. They could've allocated the money for severance earlier in the year but they used it to go after a Lionsgate contract instead. Remember the Supershow nonsense? Telltale has been losing money for years and years (https://comicbook.com/gaming/2018/09/22/telltale-closure-the-walking-dead-minecraft-batman/) but the execs bet they could still make their money and even recoup the losses with nary a show of it. Interesting they didn't reach out to these "partners" interested in providing some funding to get S4 finished in some fashion before the bankruptcy allocation, right? Oh, and look at when episode 2 releases in relation to the timing of that announcement with the timing of the "we will try and get the season finished in some form with new partners!" announcement. No one will be held individually accountable here, the devs will get no severance, management will move on. Why do you think S4 had no just-buy-one-episode-at-a-time function? No need for refunds after people play their two hours either. If they'd given the devs notice and worked on some sort of finish to S4 with them then that'd have infringed their ability to navigate the bankruptcy and their quick movements away from it as they have now. They didn't want to push through and run the risk of a bankruptcy court dealing with this, they wanted to time it to get all the money they could then abruptly quit themselves. The VAs have contracts for S4 still so whatever abbreviated form it might get finished in will have them transferred over, but don't hold your breath for any of the writers.

Some people (I remember N8 specifically) asked to see my explain my thought process with the ordering of the stories in Shit Trips 2.5 Now that bookclub has concluded, here it is (tagging a post of N8’s to alert him: >>100958)

I read all of the stories, more than a few more than once. I made notes and looked for any sort of linkages between stories (different authors had covered deepfaking, Adam Mitchell, Clara adventures post-Hell Bent, in-universe takes on potential alternate Doctors, riffs on various real-world authors and styles, out-of-universe takes on potential alternate Doctors, different authors turned out to have similar styles or approaches, there were meta stories about production figures, meta stories about /who/, Nilso, etc.), as well as making note of the direct connections multiple authors (Gallifery_Immigrant, Nacho, Morphant) had made in writing connected stories with shared characters and the like. I took particular note of length, tone, pacing, authorship, and - more than anything else - accessibility.

Accessibility seemed a pertinent issue to me since (as previous threads this week noted), Shit Trips has increasingly ballooned in scope, length, ambition, and barrier to entry. To that end, even before working on the sequential order that I presumed the book club would work off if nothing else, I added those “What if…” logline descriptions for each story (hyperlinked right to the corresponding stories, of course), so just by skimming the contents people could very briefly see a very brief suggestion of a story’s premise or tone. As I said in the post launching Shit Trips 2.5 on the board, and in the foreword to the collection itself, this was to encourage people to actually read the stories. To read the sorts of stories that interested them, instead of just admiring that /who/ got such a project done, before shying away at the scope of the set and never actually getting around to reading any of it. To not have their experience of Shit Trips 2.5 dictated to them by any curator, but to have a squiz around whatever interested in whatever order they pleased (with special note given of the minority of stories that approach might be wonkier for). The ordering was devised to be as natural, smooth, and engaging structure as possible to readers that would end up following it instead of darting around the stories in their set of their own volition; accessibility was always the underpinning principle for me, in whatever form the reader took the volume.

So, first in the order then is of course the excellent cover created by GWAAD (who did very professional work, making a genuinely lovely cover I admire), then the table of contents, then the foreword, as just described. Setting aside the principles of those then, next is the first section of the framing story. This was written by Gallifrey_Immigrant, who wrote the framing stories for the first two volumes as well of course. He efficiently set up a logical way to frame every other author’s stories in a kind of metatext Torchwood story of his own.

 No.101517

>>101515

I'll look around.

 No.101518

Next, essentially first then, in the collection came Morphant’s three Sarah Jane Adventures sequel stories. I put these “first” for several reasons. The value of their brevity can’t be overstated. Again, accessibility - these were three very, very short stories with quickly established, easily understood clear hooks that were immediately engaging. They were very on-theme, following the “brief” for Shit Trips 2.5 (spinoffs, alternate Doctors, companions) completely on-point, but while using characters nearly every /who/re would be familiar with, in a set-up every /who/re could understand. Even setting aside the actual quality of these stories, they made the perfect opening because they grab a reader quickly, and the accessibility value of that seemed enormously important to me. Start things off with three great, approachable stories to keep people enthused about the collection, from where hopefully they’d continue reading.

Next came Nilso’s story. Well, to the letter, next is a brief framing story segment. I wrote entries #2-13 of the framing story, Gallifrey_Immigrant of course writing the seminal. I am not going to speak at any length about my stories here, that’s not what this post is about, so we’ll leave those alone.

Nilso’s story then. This was an ambitious story oft-discussed in the lead up to the collection’s release. That, along with the very clear and immediately engaging and understandable hook (Doctors regenerating a season later), the unconventional methods of storytelling (visual, establishing early-on that the collection wouldn’t just be text) and the memetic appeal of the authorship (cannot be understated) contributed to frontloading it in the collection.

Next came two stories where other authors (Gallifrey_Immigrant and myself) deployed Nilso’s conception of alternate Doctors individually. These demonstrated further potentially engaging hooks to continue with the anthology - further presence of creative visual material (splendid work by Nilso) and collaborative stories crossing authorship and influence. They also flowed clearly from Nilso’s flagship story, using his conceptions and art, and kept things “on-theme” (alternate Doctors, companion focus, etc.). Gallifrey_Immigrant’s story was placed after my own because it directly uses conceptions of Doctors that Nilso provided visual content for in my story, so readers could enjoy Gallifrey_Immigrant’s story with that visual reinforcement in place.

Next was The Other’s Eddie Redmayne Doctor story which, again, flowed clearly from that alternate Doctor theme the anthology was nominally about, and which the previous stories had also used, as well as having an immediately understandable hook in the casting, which had been memed on /who/ quite a bit in the past (often very creatively by a certain someone). It was also very brief, hopefully a refresher after the previous stories which were more mid-length. The next story (one of two in the set by a published DW fanfiction author!) was included for the same reasons, running slightly longer but with a hook-ier title. TheOncomingStorm and Nacho’s following stories also followed those same principles, ordered in the way they specifically were to keep the pacing and story length fresh.

 No.101519

Next, the anthology shifts pace from alternate Doctor stories to more meta style stories, first with a Foreman fiction (again, frontloaded because Foreman fiction has obvious appeal to /who/res) and then Broken Mirrors’ multiform complete alternate take on Doctor Who’s real history epic. I actually thought that would be the most-discussed entry of the anthology given how novel and spanning it is.

It was written in two sections/halves, with the assumption they’d be interspersed separately throughout the anthology. Some other authors wrote connected stories and assumed they’d be interspersed throughout the anthology instead of kept unified. While obviously I’d implore people to experience the anthology in whatever order they’d like, that being the impetus of how the table of contents was devised and formatted (existing as action against the very act here of someone dictating the order of other people’s stories), I pointedly did not intersperse stories for several reasons. I believe interspersing stories makes a lot of sense to authors. I don’t believe it makes much sense to readers. In my experience, and in the experience of some others I’ve talked to, separating out connected stories throughout an anthology doesn’t land a huge hook, benefit pacing and keep consistent focus and interest while not burdening the reader with the scope of reading connected works together…instead it just leads readers to forget what took place in earlier sections and lose grasp of whatever tonal and narrative approach an author had set up, while undercutting the level of work they’d carried out to make something of length worthy of considering splitting in the first place. Obviously that’s just one view, and it’s a view I did everything I could to empower readers to contest - again, the whole existence of this order was a genuine labour of love, but something I wanted readers to have every intention and ability to bypass in favour of their own preference.

The next story covers some ground-not-often-trod-on (TVM era), as in the spirit of the last story, as well as having linkage by way of meta show production issues (Fox). The next two stories revolve around deepfaking, with a light meta focus (naturally flowing on from the two previous), the latter also following Clara. The story after that also follows Clara, in the same post-Hell Bent era. The story after that also follows Clara, and is much briefer than the two Clara stories preceding it. Again, this is all attempts to have stories flow naturally but vary enough in pacing and approach to keep a sort of lilt to the proceedings.

Following those Clara stories come stories of 12’s era, which seemed fitting, first Miller’s 12 story, then Gallifrey_Immigrant’s Class story with April, then Judy’s meta story about 12’s era. This is followed by a succession of three very short stories continuing that meta theme more directly, focusing on showrunners. These stories were also placed deeper into the volume like this so as to not draw undue focus onto their controversial authors, as was also the case for the following story content-wise. The two stories after that was also very meta, though /who/ focused rather than Who focused as with the preceding ones.

 No.101520

From that meta memetic sort of approach of the last few stories, outright memey stories seemed a natural direction to take, and so the next four stories go in that direction. The first , a Gallifery_Immigrant story, deploys a comedic “what the fuck?”, so I intentionally distanced it from the Nilso-me-Gallifrey_Immigrant sequence very early in the volume which also features the same gag exclamation to hopefully preserve two separate instances of comedy. The fourth of these memier stories was a riff on a Hemingway story, which melded well with a story about Adam I’d written that was a riff on another Hemingway story. In turn, that flowed well into Skelly’s (unforgettably illustrated) Adam story.

From there it seemed the natural point to start showcasing the ambitious, less-accessible interconnected stories, and so came the many stories from Gallifrey_Immigrant, Nacho, and Morphant that cross-authorial toolbox playing and a continuity unto themselves. After that epic procession of twelve stories, it seemed fitting to include Nacho’s “Epilogue” story as a coda, as well as a circle around to the stories that had preceded them, as it too is a meta showrunner memey story.

With that epic series of stories concluded, and a neat little circle around it, it seemed the best point to include stories without obvious linkages to other stories. Fortunately, those four stories varied in length and approach enough to still have a varying flow to their procession. After that came more very short stories from controversial /who/res, whose stories actually fit together very naturally given a lot of stylistic similarities in length, tone, approach, etc.

Circling back more on-theme, the next two stories revolved more around alternate takes on Doctor Who, with Gallifery_Immigrant’s “Epoch Doctor” story (following on the last of the preceding shorter stories, which references that same post), and N8’s Faction Paradox story (oh, calling that an alternate take on Doctor Who is probably unfair, isn’t it?), which also amusingly (and rather brilliantly) links Shit Trips to quite something else again too.

With every other author’s stories out of the way (bar Mr. Offerino’s, styled as an epilogue, where it was best placed), I placed the remainder of my own, at the end where they belonged. The first was a very short comment on the theme, the second was my “remix” of River Song as born out of discussions on /who/. Again, I’m writing this post to illustrate to those interested the thought process that went into the anthology’s “ordering”, not to ruminate on my own stories, but I did discuss that story’s length with Nilso around a fortnight ago here if that is of interest, here: >>94385.

That last story, and the conclusion of the framing story, were intentionally undercut with Mr. Offerino’s story’s final placement as the epilogue, ensuring the anthology did leave on an exciting and fun hook of clear interest to /who/, and hopefully dulling to some small extent the inherent vanity project issues of positioning an “editor’s” stories as a “conclusion” to a collected work of communal fanfiction.

 No.101521

If it wasn't clear from my stories in the set (or hell, these posts), I very much agree with the spirit of some of the posts over the last few days. The ones making the case that Shit Trips has shifted focus from a collectively enjoyed work of communal celebration to something more autofellatic, unengaging, and forced in nature. For any and all parts of mine in that unpleasant transformation - from the bottom of my heart, I really am so sorry. I do hope contributors are proud of their efforts. I've a lot of love for the people here.

A proposal on the form, if any, future /who/ anthologies take at some point down the line after Series 11…after seeing all the issues folks described with Shit Trips over the last few threads firsthand, I think there is a way to negate a lot of them. Just an idea:

* MAKE EVERY STORY ANONYMOUS - no identities, no authorship, just the stories themselves. This would make everything so much more approachable and such an even playing field. No trip/streamchad identities, no complicated collaborations, just simply the stories themselves. No ego, no fear of looking dumb in front of anyone. Completely anonymous. Completely /who/.

* MAKE A STRICT PAGE LIMIT - say, no more than five pages. Zero exceptions. More approachable, more equalised, more level.

* MAKE A STRICT DEADLINE AND NEVER CHANGE IT - all stories up until X day accepted, after that no second chances, and whoever is “curating” the anthology collects them into a nice pdf (true to the spirit of anonymity and community would ideally forgo a framing story and have every story stand as levelly as the other) to be released back to the community.

* NO THEME OR TOPIC - anything goes, like with the first two volumes. As with all these proposed rules, zero expectations, so everyone knows where they stand and there’s no different treatment for anyone or any story.

I think personally that would be the ideal way to bring a /who/ fiction community project back to its roots of community, participation, and above all else FUN. Just a suggestion.

In any case, Series 11 is about to start, we are about to be in the onseason, it’s time to watch the show. Sometime down the line /who/ can look to community projects again, but they should arise out of a communal excitement, not a perfunctory wish just to always be planning something. I say this all with much love and appreciation for us all. Thank you for reading my takes on all this, and I hope the insight into the ordering was interesting for, well, those interested.

Could Boemina be Ashildr?

 No.101549

Why did she lose weight ;_;

 No.101551

>>101549

I always thought she can die from any gunshot or any major injury, she's just cant age.

 No.101552

>>101551

it gets mentioned that her immune system is boosted by the nanogenes or whatever, so she should be immune to illnesses. Apart from that, she could just die

 No.101553

kinda impossible she was apt to stay away from any mortal danger for 16 billion years

where are we at now?

 No.101565

>>101560

we're roughly 14.5 seasons away from 1000 episodes. New Who only having 11 eps a season now instead of like 22 back in the day is really slowing us down

i'm currently rewatching rose.. i feel like i could be more hyped for series 11 but what is exciting is having another new first episode

rose and the eleventh hour are two of the most energetic who episodes with the most flair. watching rose now still instantly takes me back to that feeling of freshness in 2005. i'd forgotten how good it is really, i've preferred the eleventh hour for years now but i'm starting to change my mind. they each feel very rtd and very moffat. knowing basically nothing about the woman who fell to earth, i can still hope 'very chibnall' will be a good thing too.

I honestly don't know what to say. You know, they really pissed me off

for closing down the wiki while I was…well gone.

That wiki was such a good source of insane memes. God..does anyone have all those JUST images?

I've been having weird dreams lately, like seeing a boy with a skull on his head and it wasn't a human skull and yet his face was seen.

He entered a building and then it shifted into Gallifrey's dry lands where

he'd be close to the … *cough*
