le (not fake) minor spoilers

We don’t know exactly who Angstrom and Epzo are but we know who portrays them; Angstrom is played by Susan Lynch and Epzo by Shaun Dooley.

Desolation is possibly the name of the alien planet.

In addition to Angstrom and Epzo, there is also a character called Ilin, played by Art Malik.

And there are creatures called Remnants, voiced by Ian Gelder. It’s possible Ian Gelder’s voice may be altered by a synthesizer for the the Remnants but here is a sample of his voice:

>This episode is a legitimate leap for the show into modern monsters and scares. It’s still ostensibly a family show, but the situations and visuals may be far too terrifying for younger viewers. The effects look better, too, with both prosthetics and digital effects getting a serious upgrade.

I feel like doing a fancy title sequence that's totally stylistically different from the traditional one, and has a fucking pop song instead of the main theme, would be a surefire way to get the entire country REEEing straight onto their facebook saying "THEYVE RUINED DOCTOR WHO" even if the usual sequence kicked in the following week.

It's far more likely that there just isn't a big musical title sequence at all.

 No.107581

>>107576

To be fair, you have to have a very high IQ to understand Doctor Who. The humor is extremely subtle, and without a solid grasp of temporal mechanics and quantum physics, most of the jokes will go over a typical viewer's head. There's also the Doctor's, specifically the Twelfth’s, nihilistic outlook, which is deftly woven into his characterisation - his personal philosophy draws heavily from Narodnaya Volya literature, for instance. The fans understand this stuff; they have the intellectual capacity to truly appreciate the depths of these jokes, to realize that they're not just funny- they say something deep about LIFE. As a consequence people who dislike Doctor Who truly ARE idiots- of course they wouldn't appreciate, for instance, the humour in the Doctor’s catchphrases: “My boy; Oh my giddy aunt; Reverse the polarity; Would you like a jelly baby?; Brave heart; UNLIMITED RICE PUDDING; I think have amnesia; No more; Fantastic!; Allons-y!, Geronimo!; and Shut up!" which are a cryptic reference to Turgenev's Russian epic Fathers and Sons. I'm smirking right now just imagining one of those addlepated simpletons scratching their heads in confusion as Steven Moffat's genius unfolds itself on their television screens. What fools… how I pity them. 😂 And yes by the way, I DO have a Gallifreyan tattoo. And no, you cannot see it. It's for the ladies' eyes only- And even they have to demonstrate that they can translate Gallifreyan (from memory) and that they're within 5 IQ points of my own (preferably lower) beforehand.

All I wanted from that whole episode was Graham and Doctor interactions, that's all I fucking wanted, but no, I was forced this bullshit fucking storyline about knife crime down my fucking throat like it's a big fat dick going in my fucking throat like, no, no no no NOOO! I see the appeal, but it's a fundamentally dishonest attitude now. The very structure of the show has relied on the Doctor not being "just a traveller" for a very long time. If they wanted to write that show they should have done it about 30 years ago. Every time Chibnall spadges on about ALL NEW MONSTERS! he undermines the "just le traveller!" vision of Doctor Who.

 No.107635

>>107632

Well, it depends. They can't write the Doctor as "just a cosmic hobo with nothing special about her" now, it would be jarring. But I think the Doctor's attitude could change. For the Doctor to consider herself just a traveller, rather than building herself up like he has in the new series so far would be interesting to me, and honestly would feel like a natural extension of Capaldi's era. He still evidently thought highly of himself, quoting his mega reputation in both Extremis and The Doctor Falls. But I think it would make sense or the Doctor's ego to die down a bit further (I feel it already started in 2014)

But other than how the Doctor sees herself, having her encounter more unknowns rather than old enemies would take the focus away from the Doctor as a superhero imo. When The Doctor meets the Daleks, there's an understanding that they've fought a thousand times now, and the Doctor's pretty much always won. But in s11, if the Doctor meets a giant spider, an electricity monster, evil ribbons, whatever… Her reputation isnt gonna do shit to scare them.

Even just the little things: When the Doctor meets the Judoon in Series 3, he claims to already know who they are. Then they go to New New York where he's already been, then they meet the Carrionites next, and he's met them before too. I'd love it if most of the monsters and villains this series were completely new to the Doctor. She can be a super smart heroic oncoming storm or whatever, but I like the idea of her encountering planets and aliens she has literally never met. I feel that would somehow raise the stakes a little

I'm not saying rewrite the character, but I'd like the Doctor to see herself as less of a lonely god (even if she is), and I'd like her to be framed slightly differently.

 No.107636

>>107629

Well there was that bit in Turn Left where the Doctor pinched his eyelids and started doing an impression of a chinese woman with lots of racial epithets. I thought that was a bit much.

>>107632

Traveller doesn't have to mean "tourist". Hopefully it just means no more waffle about the time war and the oncoming storm etc. Series 7B is absolutely intolerable in this regard. I know some people like it but I much prefer Doctor Who as pure anthology.

>There's someone else. The man who sent me out there. The man who told me to walk the Earth. And his name is the Doctor. He has saved your lives so many times, and you never even knew he was there. He never stops. He never stays. He never asks to be thanked. But I've seen him. I know him. I love him. And I know what he can do.

>I'm the Doctor. I'm a Time Lord. I'm from the planet Gallifrey in the constellation of Kasterborous. I'm nine hundred and three years old and I'm the man who's going to save your lives and all six billion people on the planet below. You got a problem with that?

I see returning foes and locales like credit. You have devalued the episode by robbing it of freshness and creativity. So to compensate, the story must be really good to justify itself. That's why I rolled my eyes at the Cybermen episodes in Series 8 and 9. They were actually not that bad but i'm left with the feeling that they'd be much improved with some fresh material.

but there are loads of episodes with original monsters and concepts that are hot fucking garbage, whereas Series 8 and 10's Cybermen episodes use the themes associated with the Cybermen to further their own stories…

 No.107649

>>107646

The Cybermen are absolutely thematically central to Series 8, a series in which every single episode either featured cyborgs, soldiers, or cyborg soldiers. They were the logical endpoint of what the series had been exploring about artificiality, dehumanisation, the Doctor positioning himself more like his early days (note the visual callback to the Invasion). The series is so aware of this it even cheekily points out how utterly relevant they are with the pointed musical "spoiler" about the Cybermen in Dark Water. The Cybermen inform and comment on 12, Clara, and Danny's development and stories. In a show with over half a century of stories there is tremendous value in utilising the past for new story purposes, instead of just churning out endless new status quo stories that don't reflect on the old to comment on the new.

I've spent the last couple of days thinking loads about RTD's original plans for the series 4 opener. I think we came out on the better side, though - his layout for the series sounded seriously shit, especially Journey's End; bringing Catherine Tate back was also the best possible option. It just always interests me to consider "what could have been".

>'In any other world / You could tell the difference?' That's a Doctor Who companion song! That's 'I'm going in the TARDIS'! And then those violins start. 'Say goodbye to the world you thought you lived in.' That's Penny! I'm going to use that track on screen, as she decides to become the companion. The scene is written in my head. I can see it — where she is, how she walks, how I write the stage directions, the mood of it, the romance of it, the size of it. I can absolutely see it.

I'm entirely listening out of a sunk cost fallacy at this point.

Certainly not, but in this case I'm not interested in Nation's intentions so much as his capabilities. The Daleks is first and foremost a padded romp with bug eyed monsters which also happens to mark the point at which the Doctor goes from acting like an arsehole to acting in a heroic capacity. This doesn't make it a character study. As character-driven storytelling in that period goes it's not remotely on the level of Edge of Destruction or The Aztecs, and neither of those qualify as character studies either. Arguably it's far too early in the course of the show for the idea of a character study to even have entered the playing field. Even as late on as the 7/Ace era, when the interiority of the characters is a huge concern, the show is not actually doing "character studies" conceived on the level of Midnight.

I think we've both read the story in different ways - what I'm highlighting is the Doctor's manipulation (>le doctor is manipulative and dark) of his companions into getting the fluid link from the city and causing them so much tormenting, in the end leaving them all bedraggled. I don't see the Doctor as having gone from acting like an arsehole to becoming a hero in that whatsoever, and I think that's important because it's the first time the audience is supposed to question the Doctor's trustworthiness as a leader, and it's the first time I think the Doctor is made to (implicitly) evaluate his actions, thus causing him to take on the role of a hero later

what are some headcanons you have that you would never actually want to see explored in the show? (either because it would ruin the mystery or be to bogged down)

I like to think the weeping angels were these peaceful things on Gallifrey, feeding on the time vortex, and would be something that kids on Gallifrey would play games with. But after the Time War, they were left scattered and hungry, and have resorted to other means. They could kill you and feed on your lost potential, but instead they send you back in time. to be kind. Every time we see them in the new series, they're more desperate and hungry than the last time. In Time of Angels, one of them was willing to crash a spaceship so a city of angels could feed on the radiation. In Angels Take Manhattan, they were willing to battery farm humans. But I like the idea they were once peaceful and fairly chill, because it seems like it would be a pretty horrifying aspect of the time war. Something peaceful from The Doctor's childhood resorting to murder…. I'm sure there are plenty of things that contradict my idea, but whatever

i like that a lot. i like to vaugely headcanon the angels as some sort of muliated/punished/damaged time lords, going by the pose in EOT and general temporal nature of em. maybe like how some time lords wanted to be celestis, some wanted to be final sanction, some ended up as angels for some reaosn

 No.107816

I'd personally like to imagine that the Weeping Angels fell from grace/reverence in their own society and went from being an incredibly civilized society to nothing more than feral scavengers. Maybe they were jealous of the Time Lords and wanted to mimic them, but after flying too close to the proverbial sun they lost their wings and the Time Lords gave them some wildly unfair and ironic punishment.

On the topic of headcanons, I don't have too much love for The Other but I can see why it's something people would like.

The National Anthem is less good once you become more redpilled and realise it's a bit too apologetic towards the government and ruling class in general. The idea that it's evidence of some horrible, awful moral rot for the populace to be interested in seeing the PM humiliated and degraded comes off less and less in touch with reality with every successive year of the Tories.

It's a symptom of a bigger problem with the show in general, which is that it's too content to stop the commentary at "gosh arent people awful" instead of pushing through to make an argument about what the real problems are.

I still like the ep as a well executed bit of dark absurdism though. I think most people just hate it because it's gross and weird rather than shiny and sci-fi.

London, 1869. Four very different Victorian women are drawn into the dark underground world of female boxing by the eccentric Professor Sharp. Controlled by men and constrained by corsets, each finds an unexpected freedom in the boxing ring. As their lives begin to intertwine their journey takes us through grand drawing rooms, bustling theatres and rowdy Southwark pubs where the women fight inequality as well as each other. But with the final showdown approaching only one can become the Lady Boxing Champion of the World…

Based on historical research into 19th century women’s boxing, The Sweet Science of Bruising is a fascinating new play by Joy Wilkinson (Verity Bargate Award winner and new series writer for Doctor Who). Featuring an ensemble cast and thrilling up-close boxing matches, this is an epic tale of passion, politics and pugilism.

I have one regarding the reason he left Gallifrey, but really it's just taking all the aspects we know about his history and working them together into a coherent through-line.

As a wee little boy who sleeps in a barn he learns the story of the Hybrid, and when he's taken to the Untempered Schism he sees himself standing in the ruins of Gallifrey and realizes it must be him.

He slacks off in his studies out of a mixture of despair and a vague notion that if he amounts to nothing then he'll never have that power. Eventually he changes track and starts studying everything he can, thinking the best way would be to learn how to destroy Gallifrey and then not do that, in essence. He studies the ancient superweapons of Gallifrey, including the Hand of Omega. He gets ahold of one of the prototypes of the Hand, and during experimentation it "goes off" and kills a lot of people, including Susan's parents. Out of fear of what he might do, and to escape the authorities, he takes Susan and the Hand and flees in a TARDIS to hide it away. On the way back from stowing it in a graveyard, he finds a couple of teachers poking around the TARDIS and then you know the rest of the story.

what was the purpose of this photoshoot? If they were trying to make a statement about what it would have been like to have 13 female doctors, shouldn't they have had women dressed up in the outfits of all the previous doctors?

If they're not trying to make a statement about that, what is the reason for dressing 13 women up as 13? Did they really just superficially ask "what can we do to promote the show… oh I know, the doctor's a woman and she's the 13th one, so let's get 13 women dressed up as her!"? I'm sure they're paid models and not actual cosplayers. TBF, I did also say that they're not bad episodes, far from it, they're just painfully targeted at newbies as you gotta sit through reintroductions of all the plot elements. Hopefully it's only like that for the first few episodes then we get back to normal, although it's especially stretched out this time for reasons I won't go into right now. To copy and paste and edit a bit to remove spoilers that wasn't seen:

The trend of "new viewers being the aim" continues. As a fan, I found them both to be painfully slow to do traditional new era shit and I'm fairly well aware that this probably speaks more for the state of me and fans and my/our expectations than the quality of episodes themselves. It's one of those cases where I know this shouldn't affect my enjoyment of the episode from a critical or quality of episode perspective but it still does hamper my enjoyment of the episode.

But if it was that on its own, it wouldn't be as bad. The issue here is that….there's an awful lot of padding while I'm waiting for certain bits and a lot of that padding is unimportant, boring and/or clichés redressed. There's the odd interesting scene or plot-line or twist here and there but they're not really feeling all that imaginative or make it worthy of the hype.

On the other hand, if I was a newbie, I wouldn't really be going into it with expectations or "needs" or anything and that's why I think that if people can be let down now before they watch it, they might end up enjoying it more, even if slightly, than otherwise.

Series 5 really is the gold standard, although I think that might speak more for series 5's quality than anything else. Fucking kino.

>>107922

Jesus Christ, Ryan is so bad at it that it honestly frustrates me (from a level where it's something I'd love to get into at some point, as Nate very well knows, and stupidity just annoys me in general, see: The Zygon Invasion UNIT/Family scene). I'll spoiler tag just in case although it's so minor that it really doesn't matter: I don't think he's actually a YouTuber myself, at least I wouldn't classify him as one. It's not his job, barely even a hobby, and I imagine that he does it purely for himself and YouTube is just the tool he uses, perhaps his friends and family occasionally watch too. It's not really a major thing but the minor details paints a weird picture. Based on my memory of my single viewing, I don't think they even reference that he's a vlogger anyway.

Time for the data: Channel name? "RyanS". 37 subs. The video is literally titled "Hey". Who the fuck titles their videos "Hey"? No description. 19 views. 11 likes but 3 dislikes . At least it's correctly categorised as "Blog". And yet, he of course has a really good camera. Even the fucking YouTube algorithm, which normally recommends another video from the same user or at least very similar, wants to get as far out of there and as quick as possible.

I absolutely love how he posts this deeply emotional and life changing story, possibly the biggest video a vlogger could post, and then 3 of the few fuckers who care enough to watch/subscribe just come and dislike it

Does any of this matter? Fuck no, but what kind of Doctor Who fan would I be if I didn't nitpick pointless shitty details!

 No.108073

I think one of the more annoying things of the Doctor Who fandom is how some fans of the classic - not all of them, but it does happen - get mad or annoyed at the fans of New Who who haven’t seen Classic Who.

I would love to watch Classic Who, and I know I’m not the only one. However, it’s impossible. Not because the episodes are simply not online, but they don’t exist anymore. They were destroyed, lost, whatever, but the BBC no longer has a lot of Classic Who.

So to the Classic Who fans who have a problem with the New Who fans not seeing the old series, it’s not because we don’t want to see it, it’s because we can’t. And I’m not going to watch a show with big chunks missing from it. That would be like reading a book with pages missing. And I won’t do that.

listen to the music in that clip

it sounds like a sound-alike rendition of I am The Doctor - yknow, the type of thing they use in shows where they don't want to pay licensing fees so they create an off-brand version of a song that people immediately recognise as the song it's copying

It's 7/4 and has a similar rhythm, just a different melody

is this segun's work? 13's theme?

Ridiculous to my mind was the claim that he “couldn’t write women” (from Amy Pond to Missy to River Song, there were plenty of strong female characters during Moffat’s reign), but a more plausible malaise for a lot of viewers was how much attention needed to be paid to episodes.

>Moffat’s mistake, if it could be called a mistake, was to start making Doctor Who for Doctor Who fans. Casual viewers such as, say, my mum couldn’t always follow the show’s backstory-heavy plots. So they didn’t always tune in. Series nine opener The Magician’s Apprentice attracted an overnight audience of just 4.6 million viewers (and 6.5 million consolidated) in 2015, the lowest series opener since the show’s return in 2005.

Legit chills when they used the full theme there, I'd always loved the full theme but thought it was just a little treat for those with the actual album soundtrack. I hate Felina and think Ozymandias in every sense should have been the finale, but Granite State was a really interesting, ruthlessly depressing coda. Gilligan is not the type at all to ever do it but I wonder what that moment would have been like as the ending of the show there. The trouble with doing this for Doctor Who is that the middle 8 is shit and so it would ruin the effect of playing the full theme over an actual scene in an episode.

same, it's one of my favourite moments of the whole show, it kind of justifies Felina for me just on the strength of how good a cliffhanger it is. I even defend the Nazis, though they're in part a consequence of how fucking stupid the flashforward was.

I'm guessing part of your love of BCS comes to how much more grounded it is than BB S3 onwards? I like how BB became more straightly a kind of western morality play but I understand how that would verge the fans of the more grounded early years. I started watching the show during season 3's airing iirc.

>I'm guessing part of your love of BCS comes to how much more grounded it is than BB S3 onwards?

Kind of, maybe grounded isn't the word I'd use though (stuff like Danny Trejo's tortoise head still happened during those early seasons). The black comedy elements really made the show feel like it had a fresh voice, and yeah I was a bit sad that it lost that as it went on. So yeah BCS is fucking heaven to me now. Also, Vince said something on a recent BCS insider podcast that really speaks to this discussion and had a lot of mixed emotions hearing it come out of his mouth:

>What [we] never do is say "hey wouldn't it be cool if you did this, wouldn't it be cool if you did that ,what if, you know how about Jimmy…" because when you are leading with the "cool" thing you are not following the character, or rather you are not letting the character do his or her own thinking, and that way lies monsters as they say. You're just sort of bullshitting your way through it and you're never gonna wind up with anything truly organic or truly ultimately meaningful […] rather than character based then it becomes cool based, it becomes attitude. "Oh man, there's this awesome awesome awesome scene, a location we could use for this awesome shootout and there's this new kind of gun" You can get a fair bit of mileage from doing that, you could fool a viewer for a while doing that, but not forever. It doesn't pay dividends. Ultimately it's empty calories. […] You're building on quicksand if you do it that way versus building on concrete.

So, uh, bravo Vince. I guess considering he doesn't see that style of storytelling as "sustainable" he probably doesn't feel as bad resorting to it for the finale of a series. He should though.

The opening of Lie of the Land verges on self-parody, doesn't it? It's like the most half-assed cliché dystopia imaginable.

I have to admit Ghost Monuments sounds dull-ish as by now. It's like the first thing you come up when you start brainstorming for future episode "what if there's a planet but its desert". I'm hope (and i'm kind of sure) that there's another spin for it, but for now it doesn't sounds as half as intriguing as RTD's and Moff's second eps.

correct episodes.

i obviously like their approach a lot in general but my quibbles with are 1) i think the "every season resets the previous season" memes have a grain of truth, especially for BCS s2, 2) the pace of BCS wouldnt bother me at all, s4 wouldnt bother me at all, if not for gould saying in the s4 promo interviews he thinks it will have the same run of BB in the long run. there is so much left to cover for jimmy even a BB or Gene season aside and i love the slow pace i really do but seeing half a season on superlab contsruction when they might only get ~20 more episoedes is worrying. i know their process is cracking a season at a time and not thinking further beyond that but i worry.

the way PCJ described it really does make it sound like its just painstakingly explaining how a dr who episode setup works to normies, which sounds so insane. we'll see soon enough. i hate beast below but moff full ball dived into doing crazy hooks right from the start.
