The first time they tell you that the world's turning and you just can't quite believe it 'cos everything looks like it's standin' still. I can feel it. The turn of the Earth. I enjoyed the visuals, even if I was watching it on 240p.

Ryan and Yas have some chemistry going on, especially with that "we went to the same school" thing. Can't really comment much on Ryan and Graham though, which is ironic considering their familial link. Whether or not Yas and Graham will have their moments is yet to be seen, though I'm not expecting.

Music was alright too. The crane climbing sequence had some repetitive moments though.

In the end, despite a few low points (what the fuck was that salad thing all about), I liked it. I liked it enough that I am willing to stay up at 2AM next week to watch the next episode (which has the cool spaceship, if nothing else)

Honest opinion:

I loved Capaldi's era for what it was trying to do. Even if it didn't always achieve that. Missy's emotional arc in Series 10 being an example. She has some small cameos throughout the season, nothing to write home about, and then pure fucking kino in the finale. But despite the finale being kino, there is a lack of cohesion with Missy's arc in Series 10 in my opinion. Now on to Series 11.

Based on what I've seen from Chibnall already, Broadchurch, The Great Train Robbery, Torchwood, etc… I've long had a feeling that with Chibnall we'll get consistency at the cost of actual kino. So RTD and Moffat would have kino episodes, but also Shitty episodes in their era. For every Heaven Sent / Midnight, there's a Lie of the Land / Love & Monsters. Whereas my feeling is with Chibnall, nothing will be as good as Midnight. But also nothing will be as bad as Love & Monsters.

As a result of this, I decided to try and use the mindset of someone who has never seen the show. I decided to act like I didn't know who the Doctor is, or anything like that. Try and view it through that lens. And then assume every episode will be of a similar quality to what I saw.

First thoughts: Jodie gets too much wacky dialogue, and it doesn't suit her. She's a better actress than the dialogue she's given, and I hope she calms down next week, but I also don't feel very optimistic about that. The episode felt slow, and at times I wished we would have the ADHD Moffat writing where some crazy shit is about to happen. Grace dying didn't hit me very hard, and the end felt a bit forced. However, she seemed more interesting than either Ryan or Yasmin, and I was sad that she died, simply because one of the actually interesting characters was now dead. The plot was thin, but I get it because it's trying to introduce lots of new characters, so that's fine. I lowkey wish the villain was campier. He looked to silly to not dial up the camp to 11, but the actor played it too straight for me liking. When minor characters were in danger I kind of cared about them. Moff wasn't good at writing red-shirts in my opinion though.

All in all, if the series is good, I will call it a success. Series 1 and Series 9 are in my opinion, more than the sum of their parts. Not every individual episode is amazing, but the series as a whole knows what it's trying to do and achieves it. With Series 11, if the characters are written well, and I am still invested in what's happening, I'll be happy with this episode as the quality of each episode. I understand we won't get stand-outs like Heaven Sent, and I want to criticise Chibnall on his own terms.

Episode was good. Visuals were great, but I suppose it helps that the BBC were basically throwing money at them. I wish previous series had gotten the same amount of love, though I suppose there's always charm in the fact that the show was so obviously low budget at times… relatively speaking. Some of the acting was a bit wooden at times (see: Ryan), but it was still enjoyable. On the whole, it was so-so. Nothing special, aside from how pretty it looked, but I suppose that's the norm now. I like to imagine how this episode would've been received with the visuals and budget of previous series, because when you lack something spectacular to look at, you really need to make up for it with the acting and writing. Not that it was bad, but… food for thought.

I also think that it was interesting that she stayed for the funeral. 12 wouldn't have done that, TARDIS or no TARDIS.

I felt like all the characters had distinct personalities (Yaz- a bit quick to anger), Ryan- unsure of himself and feels a need to prove himself, Graham- irritable, and hard on his grandson.

And the side characters were well-done too.

>Three historicals are all but confirmed. Rosa Parks episode, a witches episode, and a historical in India.

Oh I know about that, but I hope they are actual historicals in a way that only 60s Who seems to have gotten right. RTD never wrote historical eps if he could avoid it, he got other writers to do those (in fact the only Davies penned historical I can think of off the top of my head is The Next Doctor, correct me if I'm wrong.) And Moffat once admitted he didn't like doing the research for historicals, which is a shame, because his first story in Series 1 was brilliant at capturing the atmosphere of the blitz, and he was wonderful with the group of orphans looking for food too.

I'm hopeful that Chibnall's era will do that better, based on what I've heard. We just had 2 showrunners that legitimately didn't like writing historicals, and it makes me sad, because those are often my favourite Who stories.

>>110760

>I need to see it again, though, to really have an opinion.

I get that to be fair. I really liked Graham and Grace, whereas to me, Ryan and Yasmin were a bit one note. I will have to see more episodes to really know I think.

>even 12 had wacky dialogue in his beginning ep

True, but I felt the point was that he was still playing the 11th Doctor. The music transitions from 11's theme to 12's theme only when he confronts the machine man, and talks about the ship of theseus; tries to grapple with his identity for the first time that episode.

(btw im kinda drunk, apologies if I'm not good at structuring my thoughts)

==REVIEW WITH SPOILERS== – some may not have been tagged, please don't read unless you've already seen the episode or don't care either way.

Doctor Who in the era of social media:

Above anything else, Chib chooses to ram this home with the half-baked commentary on modern technology (YouTube; Rahul recording himself next to the crater; Ryan really helpfully checking Social Media™ for clues; electricity tentacle thing gathering data, being referred to as weaponised biotech; "Brain and body rebooting…reformatting…" and I'm somewhat concerned this will go on for some of the series, considering the chip in Graham's head in the trailer. Having said that, though, I'd fucking RATHER it became an arc, because then it wouldn't feel quite so needless as it did there.

Doctor Who in the era of Netflix:

It really was just Stranger Things, except Netflix knew what it was doing for the first season. Chibbers chooses to riff off the vibe of Stranger Things, a small band of humans gathering together to work with the edgy female alien. The general vibe of the episode SCREAMS Stranger Things, and I get that, I honestly really do, and I accept it - but it was so poorly done that I CAN'T. It's attempted to condense that style of storytelling into an hour's worth of TV, throwing all forms of characterisation and every possible trait each companion might have into episode one to the point that it feels like he's trying to rush away from elaboration, allowing him to never have to worry about upcoming references to those traits being unfounded. In this compression of a story that would have been better off taking the form of a ten-episode arc like we suspected at one point, all of the characters are made to clump together without question. They aren't a group of people forced together, they're a group of people who willingly stagger into each other's arms. So much for the "incredible lack of hierarchy" Chibnall promised, because frankly I've never seen anyone blindly trust the Doctor as their leader quite like this before. The "Yaz to my friends" line was only the beginning - it goes for each of the characters and is expanded throughout the story. Because of this, Grace becomes the glue that binds the group together by constantly being on the Doctor's side and telling her every small detail of her, Graham and Ryan's life, whether it's relevant to the situation or not - not because that's the type of person she is, but because it's necessary growth for the story. Sometimes Chibnail doesn't even bother using her for exposition and just outright TELLS US what he wants us to know: **take the scene in which Graham reveals he's a bus driver and Grace says she'll message her "nurse's WhatsApp group". As awkward and clunky as you'd expect from him.

Doctor Who:

Is the one thing this story is not. Jodie feels like the Doctor, despite her lines being Chibnall-tier and her actions letting her down. Jodie was good but the writing was bad, unironically. But nothing else about this episode felt like I was watching the show I loved: it was a fusion of Netflix and CBBC, just a high-budget children's programme. For proof of this consider the monster's face reveal and the tooth thing. I'd also like to touch on how poor these points were: 'DNA Bombs'; the subplot with the side-character's sister; "Which one of you should I kill first?" "I'm voting none of us."; the death of the granddad at the building site; and the fact that Chibnall quite literally stole from The Christmas Invasion in the regenerative energy sleeping scene.

There were some good bits, but the good does not by any means outweigh the bad. The YouTube scene becoming the best part of the episode imo was completely unexpected. Chib twisting that to have been about Grace and not the Doctor was fantastic - it's possible that's because I've come to not expect anything clever from Chibnall, but at least he's self aware. Bravo. I also admit to absolutely loving both the line and the delivery of "2 minutes and 19 seconds - nope, forget the 2 minutes, just 19 seconds. This new nose is so reliable…"

I think, ultimately, Christopher Theodore Chibnall has a poor understanding of Doctor Who. Or perhaps he doesn't. Perhaps he fully understands and appreciates the show it's always been at its core, even when it has inevitably undergone maintenance during season 7, season 18, season 23, series 1 and series 5. But I'd rather believe he didn't. Because if he does understand that there is a true "essence" of Doctor Who, that means he's chosen to ignore it in favour of "bringing us up-to-date", as it's certainly not present in The Woman Who Fell To Earth.

Worst Lines:

"Actually, I don't want answers - I want to get back to work and forget about all this."

"I suppose you'll blame this on the dyspraxia as well. Can't ride a bike, started an alien invasion."

"Access revoked, as of now, by me!"

>>110766

>"Actually, I don't want answers - I want to get back to work and forget about all this."

I thought that line and delivery showed that character…Carl, right?–lack of self-esteem pretty well, and his reluctance to face the world.

>"I suppose you'll blame this on the dyspraxia as well. Can't ride a bike, started an alien invasion."

I think Graham is seen as legitimately a bit of an ass here, which adds actual depth to the "she was better than me" line–he isn't "Hollywood" flawed, he's actually a tad unlikeable. Isn't this what we praised Series 8 for–being willing to make the characters feel like actually flawed?

>"Access revoked, as of now, by me!"

I mean, it showed how Ryan feels responsible, and wants to make amends. It's a logical move in the situation.

>"Eat my salad, Halloween."

I have no way to fix or redeem this. That guy just seemed like a dumb jerk, and written a bit too hammily. To be fair, he did seem drunk.

As for the tech use, it didn't seem cringey. Ryan's Youtube channel was used sparingly and for a twist; Ryan using social media to look for weird happenings was clever, and was just an small element; and I'd probably use Google if I needed to learn how to use a new device really, really, quickly.

Angstrom is still unrevealed right now and they have been the biggest mystery in Series 11 for how many days now? Angstrom is going up against one of the worst characters in the series who just happens to have a lead because they're feeding off the energy of having a goofy and easy to type meme-sounding name. But you know what? Epzo still fucking sucks. Angstrom's true identity is one of the best fucking mysteries in Doctor Who, their name was listed first in the synopsis and they would have been more popular if Epzo didn't have such a stupid sounding meme name that's short and easy to type. Maybe you should shut the fuck up before you make retarded posts like this. You know why? Because you're going to be embarrassed when Angstrom's true identity is revealed. Oh look at that, it was just found out that Angstrom was named for scientific terminology, returning the show to its educational roots like the Classic series did. Are you a fucking drunk? Are you retarded? Are you autistic? You are a fucking idiot and you should never make a post in this general again and I'm fucking serious. I almost have a feeling you're the only guy making all these anti-Angstrom posts because you're a fucking hater who doesn't like the character because they're good. Fuck you, be good at something in YOUR life and then maybe try to troll the Angstromchads in this general, like I give a fuck. It's so easy to spot out your posts now, you're a retard. Always doing stupid shit like this. Why don't you try to be a good poster? Just for once? For once in your fucking life try not to make a post like this. That's just you, you're always right at getting it wrong. Fuck you. You are nothing.

I just wish people would remove their head from their own ass

15 minutes in. Atmosphere is pretty good, kinda spooky. Liking the music. Don't mind Ryan his Nana or Graham, Yaz is cute, but boring. The Doctor appeared on screen a few moments ago. I've got to take a break. I hate to say it but thus far Jodie's been the worse part thus far. Kinda over-acty and try hard, a bit difficult and disheartening to believe that these were the best takes they got. So it’s just making sure it’s fit for purpose. I think you tell great stories with great actors. And you tell stories that feel resonant to people’s lives. I'm the person you replied to. Series 2 has some great episodes, but it feels like, as a series, it doesn't know what it wants to be. Some episodes are great, but only individually. What was the point of series 2? It's not a whole, just a collection of parts.

It is if it's a conscious choice to avoid the implicit white supremacy, and other forms of casual discrimination, that haunt the industry and culture. This isnt actually true, you likely accept it all the time. When casts were all white, many times that was also pandering. All that's happening is the market is broadening and so companies are broadening who they pander to as well. No tv show company "likes" you personally and nothing it has ever done was for anything other than appealing to as many people as possible for money. They may as well trip into more diversified tv while on that quest for more cash, like I cant imagine why people care so much

I found the episode alright not amazing but alright, had a decent death count that is always a plus. Found it stupid they had a white, black and south asian companion at the same time but meh not the first sci fi show to do the united colors of Benetton to keep everyone happy. The guy flinging kebab salad at Sub Zero's secret love child to The Predator was funny. Jodie Whittaker nails the part I hope she gets better episodes than this. My main issue is the Doctor is too god damn cute. The moment she got the blow torch and hammer out that was it. Groin out of control. I should not be having boners to The Doctor that shits not normal.

Also your second point is wrong because the vast majority of TV and film is still definitely white. And you missed the point of the next part, its not that people dont want it, that point wasnt about consumers, its that doing it doesnt come naturally to the media creators. i fucking hate the cinematography.

 No.111034

This hasn't been brought up much because it's kind of obscured by all the writing choices, but I thought the direction actually hurt the episode in a lot of ways. I don't mean in terms of having pretty shots or even creative ones, I mean in how it managed the tone of the episode, how it approached staging each scene, how it approached the performances. A director has to make a lot of decisions about how each scene works on its feet and what kind of delivery they want from the actors, how each moment should look and feel.

There were so many moments in this that seemed like they should have had a bit of zest, strangeness, humour, warmth or life to them, that just got completely drowned out by an overbearing flatness of tone. Salad man could have been so much funnier. Loving granddad could have felt like a pointed interlude rather than a filler death. The hammer in the windshield could have been a window into the absurdity of local life. Grace being chatty in the middle of a crisis, delighted to find out who Yaz is, divulging about Ryan's dyspraxia, that could all have been an endearing idiosyncrasy rather than just narrative business. But it's all strangled.

It's not tough to imagine a totally different directorial approach to the script that makes it at least three times more exciting to watch.

It looked too goofy to really work, but narratively, it's a pretty fresh take. Although perhaps unintentionally ominous to conclude the episode with the Doctor Who gang all stranded in a fucking void with no hope of rescue, because it encapsulated how I felt completely

Okay not gonna lie, I love cliffhangers that come out of nowhere. It's campykino, and I've always felt the new series doesnt do enough of it.  No.111070

Thought Graham's random rude as fuck comment about Ryan's apraxia was really out of place. Don't get me wrong, it would be interesting for Graham to be a bit more prickly and less "comfy" then we all expected him to be to open him up for some characterkino over the series as he softens. But that comment was particularly nasty and seemed to come completely out of nowhere since nothing else he said in the episode indicated he was dickish in the slightest. He even seemed to be really rooting for Ryan in that opening scene on the bike as well, so that line just seemed out of character with the way Graham was presented through the rest of the episode. Kind of messy if that was what Chibnall was going for.

 No.111071

>>111070

Graham's character arc will be learning to be less of an arsehole about Ryan's dyspraxia.

Ryan's character arc will be learning to accept Graham as his granddad. (note Ryan's refusal to call him granddad, his pointing out that Graham's his nan's second husband)

Yaz's character arc will be nonexistent she doesnt fucking get one
