Now that I've let the episode stew a bit, I think it's a good time to review it.

First of all, let's sum up the plot without considering the characters for the moment: a guy finds a pod in the woods, there's a creepy scene in the dark on a train, a completely unremarkable alien comes out, cue several pointless scenes of him killing random characters we don't give a shit about (guy who stole the pod, Halloween salad guy, construction site guard) all in the same way - but wait! His actual aim is to kill another random character (now this is what I call high stakes!) and as an explaination he gives some shit about a hunting ritual so trite that even Gatiss could have come up with something better. In an attempt to make him slightly more interesting, he reveals that he collects teeth on his face, which isn't interesting at all, and that he's cheated on his assignment, which is in no way useful to the plot. The final confrontation is set on a crane because height is the easiest way of injecting a little tension into a scene.

I know the counterargument: "this isn't meant to be anything more than plain family fun, so don't ask it to be something different from what it is". Now, that's all understandable, but nowhere does it say that something needs to be a string of tired clichés in order to be family fun. Compare to RTD's least ambitious opener, "Smith & Jones", and you'll see that the latter comes off as immensely more fresh, and because of that, more fun. I'm not asking for "Heaven Sent" here; answer this: is "Smith & Jones" really an impossibly high standard to hold a Doctor Who episode up to?

"Ah yes, but it's really all about the characters, you see, the plot is just an excuse." Is it? Because to me, it looks like the characters actually suffer from the alien plot getting more focus than it deserves. In her first episode, the Doctor takes all of ten minutes to show up, and when she does, she's thrown straight into the action and never catches a breath. There's very little of her coming to terms with her regeneration, in fact next to no attempt is made to show her as a character. Except for the half-hearted small monologue at the end, it's just pseudo-Tennant quipping for 50 minutes. As for the companions, Chibnall simply can't handle introducing this many at once: Ryan has his illness and that's all we know of him, and Yasmin might as well not be there for the latter two thirds of the episode. Did we really need to spend so much screentime on the alien when it didn't make him any less boring and the characters are barely sketched?

On a positive note, Graham and Ryan's grandma are actually given a little focus, making them by the best thing about the episode. But overall, this made me really doubtful of Chibnall's ability to juggle this many companions in 50 minutes.

The final result is not terrible per se, it's just monumentally uninteresting. If this was the first Doctor Who episode I'd seen, I don't think I would come back for more. But who knows, maybe the British public will.

People were joking before that Series 11 would continue from The End of Time and erase the Moffat era, but I reckon the episode was more like a modern successor to the TV Movie. Classic Who was good, fun, imaginative storytelling on a shoestring budget with rubbish sets and effects. ChibWho is the reverse.

Jodie/Bradley/Grandmother actress were fantastic. But the actual plot/everything else were mediocre.

>the doctor surviving a fall from fucking space with zero injuries

That immediately took me out of the episode. They could have at least showed her in pain or something and the regeneration healing it. But she had literally no reaction.

>everyone following the doctor for literally no reason

The Doctor usually takes command of the situation, but there has to be a compelling reason for people to let them take over. She was in a post regen state and was confused/spouting gibberish. There was no reason for them to follow her.

>the DNA bomb thing that went nowhere

What was even the point of that? The only character who even reacts to it is Bradley's and he just acts irritated a few times. It would have been way better if that happened earlier to give them a reason to follow The Doctor around.

>the villain

Literally one of the most bland villains we've ever had in NuWho. He wasn't even enjoyable in a so bad its good way like Max Capicorn. He had almost no dialogue, had zero presence, and was stupid. Pretty much as bad as say the robot in Caretaker or 42 or something.

New theme is pretty good, though I half expect to hear the beat drop and have drum and bass ensue. Didn't feel like doctor who though, which could be a good or bad thing depending on my mood.  No.112264

I thought it was good, although "good" might be relative after having to go through Moffat's shit for so long. The more family-drama style plot was nice and probably the best part of the episode. Whittaker is OK so far but she seems to be channeling Tennant alot. The actual alien was pretty boring and uninteresting, but I actually liked how everyone is in the dark about the villain's motivations and is trying to figure things out, as a change of pace from "Doctor immediately recognizes alien and knows what they're doing."

>Mr Rick, You Had To Ask. :0) RoTD: The Woman Who Fell To Earth - a rave-iew by Mr Jiminy. Burning Question = how did Our Jodes (and her clothes) avoid burning up on re-entry, again, remind me? Avoided the ground by being distracted at the very last minute by a train load of aliens? Ohhhh… kay then. And off we go: Theme = shite. (Twenty better themes on youtube, most by the same guy, who should be doing it for the show but won't be asked because he's not black, or gay or a woman or a lesbian or disabled or a moose or a sentient robot, in any combination.) Incidental music… can't remember a single note/tone/whatever, and I only finished the episode 20mins ago. Gallery of Ethnocentric Guest Stars = waste of airtime. Script = dull. Acting = ho hum. (Best performance = the guy on the crane. Actually funny. Good job. Shame he's not in the regulars.) Photography = good. Lighting = OK. Editing = questionable. Direction = expended wastefully on everything but the cast. (Except the guy on the crane.) Script = dull. Alien space pod looks like a Homebase flower vase. Sonic is a dildo made of spoons. (So many spoons there's no room for a battery.) Menacing alien… there was a menacing alien? Character with any brains or sense at all… dear GOD did I miss them too?! Script = dull! And uneducational! (Except, wait! Apparently people suffering from dispraxia can climb 300 foot high cranes, At night! In the rain!! Ooooh, no, but wait (again), he did, like drop his torch and shit, so my bad.) Did I say: Script dull dull dull dull FUCKING USELESS and DULL? Summing up: threat level to any character at all = nil; threat level to my sanity = high. Best spin = the shiny new widescreen format means there's 25% less Dr Who to watch each week. (Although the shiny new widescreen format means each episode is probably costing at least 25% more to make.) Ranking: This Episode Ranks About As Highly As… A Dildo Made of Spoons! Do We Care? No - because it's FUCKING DOCTOR WHO AND WE FUCKING LUV IT, HURRAH!!!! See You Same Time, Same Channel Next Week… where we'll have missed the start cos it's already been changed! OK - over to You Lot for my ASS KICKING, which I truly hope will be GLORIOUS!

/who/, now listen, this is important. If this post is activated, then it can only mean one thing. Doctor Who is dead or about to die any second with no chance of escape. And that's okay. It had a good life.
And I bet you're all ranting and moaning now. Typical. But hold on and just read a bit more. This is what you should do. Let Doctor Who die. Just let this old show gather dust. Let it become a boring little show for normies and casuals. And over the years, the world'll move on and the show will be cancelled. And if you want to remember it, then you can do one thing. That's all, one thing. Have a good life. Do that for me, /who/. Have a fantastic life.

Tim Shaw: "I specialise in hunting the most profitable and well-known livestock in the seven systems. My hunt record sits at 87, and I soon intend to hunt my 88th."

Man: "How will you know your hunt when you see it?"

Tim Shaw: "I'm staring at it right now, human. Make your peace with your deities or gods, and I promise to make this quick."

Cross-posting from reddit:

If I were showrunner, I would do a regeneration / Doctor hand-off via an episode in the "real world". It starts like any ordinary finale, but after the first scene you hear the director yell "Cut!", all the actors drop out of character, and it seamlessly transitions into a sort of behind-the-scenes tour. But surprise, one of the Weeping Angels (or whatever) isn't an actor, they're actually real! There's a full-on panic, it's a horror story, fictional cast members are getting zapped, until you hear the sound of the TARDIS materializing and out steps The New Doctor, in-character, here to save the day.

The filming style would slowly shift away from found footage and back to the style of a regular episode. At some point, the New Doctor sees the actor for the previous Doctor and makes a comment about how their last incarnation used to look just like them. There might be a gag where the Doctor tries to fly the prop TARDIS. And after the villains are vanquished, in front of the astonished cast and crew, they leave in the real TARDIS, and the camera follows them to their next adventure. Cue next series.

Angstrom (Susan Lynch) and Epzo (Shaun Dooley) are the last wo competitors in the prestigious Twelve Galaxies Space Rally, whom the Doctor and her friends meet when they are marooned on an arid, sandy, deserted planet named Desolation.

Twelve Galaxies Space Rally is organized and refereed by the mysterious Ilin (Art Malik), who warns them not to drink the water or travel after dark. If they travel after dark, they risk facing the terrifying creatures that wiped out the planet’s population.

The Doctor is convinced that the TARDIS is at the finish line of the race. When the Doctor and her friends fail to reach the mountains before the sun goes down, they must face the Remnants.

If someone says "Nobody can turn out the sun" or "No one knows how to kill the doctor" then he can make the statements become true. Suddenly he can turn out the sun, suddenly he knows how to kill the doctor.

Almost all of the antagonists suffer worse fates than usual - two complete mutations of people who didn't deserve it, two people shredded in a thresher, three people killed in an explosion, several people strangled and drowned by plants. People like to make a big fuss over how violent Resurrection is (it is a violent story, don't get me wrong), but I think that this one is a bit understated.

Everyone is on top form and the score is absolutely brilliant. The cliffhangers aren't exactly fantastic but I think that they're made up for by the great lighting and script.

How many stories with 4-or-more parts achieve that rare goal, an unbroken streak of great cliffhangers?

I nominate Kinda, which gets away with it by making each one incredbly entertaining rather than worrying about making them suspenseful.

>Part 1: Hindle, the best actor in the story, losing his shit

>Part 2: The wooden box of death gets opened, accompanied by a glorious scream (even better because the resolution to this one is a genuinely funny fakeout)

>Part 3: mindfuck montage followed abruptly by "I think she's DEAD!"
