> The Woman Who Fell to Earth never threatens to be a classic, but it never flirts with disaster either. It’s a solid, workmanlike episode. Indeed, what stands out most about it in contrast to the preceding six seasons is how straightforward and uninterested in being clever it is. Heck, the preceding ten seasons. This really isn’t invested in impressing the audience.

What did liz mean by "womanlike episode"? Why is she engaging in gender stereotypes?

Inferno is great but goes on for a bit too long as does Ambassadors. Ambassadors is unlike a vast vast majority of Who and it stands out from the crowd. The antagonist isn't a 2-dimensional villain and all of the villains are played extremely sympathetically, especially by John Abineri. The score is great, the acting is great and it's one of the only Who stories I can remember where A) the villain sees the error of his ways, B) the villain doesn't die horribly and C) there is a (supposedly) amicable end between the Alien Ambassador species and the humans.

All in all a classic story.

However, Ryan did laugh when Yaz pointed out that 13 needed new clothes. As a side note, Mandip was actually really emotive in that post-funeral scene. Actually, she's really emotive throughout–I suspect all Yaz needs to become a true favorite in a episode focused on her character.

Also, most of the first half of Series 10 was a bit lackluster, though each had good moments. Thin Ice is underrated specifically, as a spiritual sequel to Kill the Moon.

Concerning how rarely I call eps bad, that's because rarely are Who eps actually fully bad. Even when Who eps aren't the best, they are usually trying to do something interesting (i.e. Forest Of The Night's focus on apocalyptic feelings and a botched attempt on focusing on how mentally ill people are sometimes ignored and just medicated instead of being understood; Knock Knock's Oedipal weirdness and themes of trauma affecting people as underlying concept of "haunted house"). The closest thing to a truly mediocre ep is Curse Of The Black Spot, which isn't bad, but it is Who-by-numbers. But it's actually rare to get a truly Who-by-numbers story.

I really liked Graham's character complexity. Both in how he said "I should have died instead", and how his meanness to Ryan actually added to that point–Graham really did seem like a bit of a jerk, but he seems to be aware of it. That'll give him a bit of a chance for growth. Also liked how he seems to be the "Tegan/Turlough" companion type–the companion that would prefer not to be travelling. We haven't really gotten that in a while (Nardole was kind of like that, but mostly due to wanting to guard the vault.)

(Also, I really do think Yasmin's desire to adventure and confident nature will make her a fan favorite, if an ep can just focus on her and give her depth. Mandip's got the acting chops for it.)

Bit of a tangent, but I always thought the same about Jake Lloyd. On the DVD for The Phantom Menace they show screen test footage of various little kids for Anakin and in that video you instantly see why they cast Jake for the part, but then he brings 0% of that performance to the actual set. I don't get why some actors get that way.

Actually, I do have a theory about why, but I don't really know about screen acting to be sure. I just remember the bit from Darkplace where Richard-Ayoade-as-Dean-Learner explains his terrible performance of Dean-Learner-as-Thornton-Reed by gesturing at the camera and saying "That camera's like a bloody magnifying glass." I think a lot of actors get that in their head and it never goes away.

It's mentioned that most members of the Torchwood team are shafted in most episodes. Probably interesting to note, then, that imo the episode where each member is most well-handled and in-character (Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang) was a Chibnall ep, proving that he can do it.

Ahgr, I'm going to have to confess something, something honestly really fucking embarrassing.

Look, I was wrong. I've even misrepresented my views a bit lately to try and save face. I thought the new Doctor Who out this week was gonna be absolute shit, I thought that for months and months and lord knows I let other people know it.

But then when I actually sat down and got through it…fucking hell, it worked, against all odds it fucking worked. It was amazing, I was enthralled the whole time. The multiple companions had amazing chemistry and depth. The villain (who I'd complained about looking cheesy) was super creative and intimidating. The performances were all amazing. I have so much egg on my face.

I fucked up. The new Doctor Who that came out this week was incredible and I was an idiot to ever doubt it. Yes, I couldn't have been happier with Ravenous 2.

:one: BBC Wales Graphics made the new intro (based on a fan design).

:two: NeonVisual made the new intro.

:three: Racial Cleansing is referenced

:four: The episode ends on a cliffhanger as The Doctor and co land near a 50s bus station

:five: The planet is out of orbit

:six: The planet was one of those taken by the Daleks in Stolen Earth (note: It's a very minor/off-handed reference so the episode still acts very standalone).

:seven: The cliffhanger is resolved in the most obvious way

:eight: ."What do we do?" "Shall we just follow her?"

:nine: An entire planet and they crash-land literally at the exact same fucking passage in the exact same direction? Seems legit.

:keycap_ten: The Doctor has to make a horrible choice, thematically repeating The Beast Below.

He feels like a fan fiction character, the Fun Salamanca, and he gets to be the origin of the bell and the reason Nacho's gone and all this. Also, going back a couple episodes, I liked the scene where she Godfathers Jimmy out of her office, it was heavy handed but I love that every time it comes up in something, they did it at the end of Luke Cage season 2 as well.

You think 13 is dominant or submissive? Because my mind immediately goes to the handcuffs, and I'm not sure how she'd handle them.

desu I enjoyed the stuff with Luke/Rey/Kylo/Snoke, but I hated everything else (even though I appreciate the commentary Johnson was trying to pull with the Poe/Holdo conflict and Benicio del Toro's character). It's like it was two movies.

Regardless of whether the haters were right or just Russian twitterbots and/or misogynists, it's certainly remarkable how much TLJ alienated the core audience and killed the hype for the franchise (cf Solo's box office).

>When Laurence Waters arrives at his rural hospital posting in a former homeland of the new South Africa, Frank, a fellow doctor there, is instantly suspicious. Laurence is everything Frank is not - young, optimistic, and full of new schemes. The two become uneasy friends, while the rest of the meagre staff in the deserted hospital view Laurence with a mixture of awe and mistrust.

>The tired, ghostly town beyond the hospital is also coping with new arrivals, and the return of old faces. The Brigadier, a self-fashioned dictator from apartheid days, is rumoured to be still alive. And down at Mama's Place, the town's only watering hole, a group of soldiers have moved in with their malign commandant, a man Frank has met before and is keen to avoid for his own dark reasons. Laurence wants to help - but in a world where the past is demanding restitution from the present, his ill-starred idealism cannot last.

We shouldn't give it such power, and yet it has that power.

One of my friends once told me that he liked me and I could use the word if I wanted. He's autistic, so I figure that's why he felt that was a reasonable thing to say. Because it's not really a word I want to use anyway, so it's not like I was waiting for the opportunity to drop n-bombs the moment he gave the green light. And it's also not really only a temporary pass issued by and recognized by only one black person at a time anyway, it's not like I could go to another black guy's house and use the n-word and say, "Oh no, it's cool, my friend said it was okay."

The only time I feel comfortable using it is when it's the only way my partner can climax.
