>As we’ve already alluded to, the script is uneasy with Doctor Who, trying to smuggle it in unnoticed. A great many words are spent making excuses for the sonic screwdriver, perhaps buckling under the pressure of spending so much time re-introducing it and having it be so central to the plot (which is the real problem, if we’re honest, but Chib’s gotta sell those toys!). The challenge of navigating between Chibnallian realism and the fantasy mode is met by skipping that step altogether and just flicking the switch from one to the other then back again; nowhere else is this more evident than immediately after Grace’s death, when the episode almost makes a point of no longer caring about what happened in the main story or even the moment of the death itself. Thanks to that, its diversion into a funereal atmosphere, eulogies, and cancer, comes off as decidedly undercooked – not a cathartic culmination of the game we’ve been playing up until that point, but changing the rules without telling us, leaving us just passively watching a set of moves on the board and not quite knowing how we got there.

>Chibnall has concurred that he “love[s] Doctor Who as a big, popular, mainstream, accessible show […] So I wanted to make sure that every member of the audience felt they had a relatable character, an access point. Hopefully it means that the show can resonate with the broadest possible audience […]”

>And yet there’s something else going on here.

>Because what else do we know about what Chibnall is trying to do with Series 11? He’s called it “Doctor Who in an era of Netflix”. He’s said “you’ve got to keep up with all the DC shows in the US”. What exactly does that mean? You can see evidence that these things are manifesting in the new episode; almost everything about the way it uses images and sound are perfectly in line with the average American sci-fi/fantasy TV drama, and in some places their cornier costumed-hero counterparts. It’s all blue-orange contrasts, luscious scenery shots, throbbing ambient electronic music (with the occasional theme kicking in that sounds like an advert for a bank), baddies in tactical armour, a dour tone. I see Americans talking about how it doesn’t have “that over-the-top BBC style” any more. So, all in all, it would seem to be a job well done.

>But how does any of this relate to making the show more relatable and accessible? Isn’t it just making the show like everything else on televi– Ah.

>the Doctor is still just as inflated in self-importance, just as fetishised by the narrative, as she was when she was still David Tennant. She’s still far more than “just a traveller”. She is still just as utterly domineering of every single other character, she’s still the centre of the bloody universe who boasts about adjusting the universal scales and is adored by all. She just acts cute about it now.

>And, contrary to whatever we may have told ourselves, and whatever Chibnall would like us to think, this episode isn’t really about the death of Grace. Not even remotely. It’s about giving Thirteen all of her designated Doctor Who moments. It’s about playing that insipid, gushing new leitmotif every time she ticks one of those boxes. It’s about insisting to the viewers that Doctor Who no longer risks damaging your expectations with strangeness and deviation, but is instead committed to following an orderly template. Everything else, the tragedy, the human struggle, the loss, is just thinly-imagined decoration that someone thinks will do a job that a corporation demands done.

>The show’s newfound humanity is no more than a mask for a robotic construct. Nu-NuWho, in its entirety, is little more than a front – a shiny, Netflix-ready cover draped over Doctor Who, attempting to stifle all of its bizarre nonsense. The result of this is that the good old instincts are being suppressed just enough to not help, and the bad old instincts aren’t being suppressed quite enough to not still harm. The show is acting like it’s gained a new lease of life when inside, it’s choking on the same old fumes.

>So of course Grace is dead. Because having a dead woman to mourn is more important than doing something genuinely fresh. She didn’t meet the criteria for desirability, whereas Thirteen does, aggressively so. Thirteen is nothing but desirability. “Pillar of hope”. I have no interest in Thirteen. In spite of everything, she is not a more human or relatable Doctor. She’s a collection of humanlike gestures. A desired value, not a person. Her “humanity” is so manufactured to please that she seems less human than ever, especially so soon after watching Twelve grapple with suicidal ideation (one of the most human feelings there is). Sorting out fair play throughout the universe? Fuck off with that.

Bravo. Excellent piece. Just some of my favourite bits here.

Jesus Christ, that "Faux-Woke" section is cancer. The show is bending over backwards to please people like him and he's just saying "not good enough" to every single little thing. But that makes perfect sense, because people like him wouldn't have any relevance or influence if they didn't themselves maintain "Faux-Victimhood".

If only you could have known what unholy retribution your little "clever" comment was about to bring down upon you, maybe you would have held your fucking tongue. I honestly think so to a non-facetious extent; the utter overwhelming circlejerk and celebratory groupthink around what they make actively dulls their talent, creativity, skill, ability to make anything worthwhile.

He's been endlessly vaugeposting for weeks now about X and Y and Z uber secret audio that always turns out to be something anticlimactic in the end, the volume of tweets vaugely hyping audios that won't come out for 2-3 years is just stupid at this point.

oh yh I remember

Remember all that debate that was had over whether or not we should go back to 4chan in order to keep the culture alive? Now it turns out S11 has made the decision for us, by being so boring that 4chan /who/ is completely dead anyway. Even the cancerous boardies don't care enough to sustain it.

Maybe this is it, maybe we're just going to mostly be languishing on here forever. Perhaps /who/ was a brief and shining moment that could only ever happen once, just like the Capaldi era.

It amazes me that people don't know that we're here at the moment. There's always posts saying "I missed you guys, I thought /who/ was gone forever" in the /tv/ threads

There will come a time where there's just one person posting on here by themselves

I've been thinking along the same lines. The fresh blood argument was kind of predisposed on the idea that S11 onseason 4chan /who/ generals could draw the type of voices to enliven things but, unexpectedly, the show itself seems to be forestalling that as much as the actual site. I love the band of misfits here, that's all I really care about /who/-wise at the moment. There's just nothing there.

Everything has its time and everything ends.

It'll happen…right?

He will get the rights to James Bond for 12 years

Maybe. I might just be being fatalist but I am genuinely worried the direction the BBC is going in aligns with Doctor Who being made as Chibnall's making it, and that the RTD and Moffat years were more flukes of their time born of very particular, unique men in very particular, unique positions. Then again, all it would take is hiring one eccentric to shake things back up again.

Yeah, I'll give him that. McGann's still cuter though.

The comic Pure Blood would make a pretty good basis for a Sontaran episode

>Sontaran Rutan war playing out as usual

>Rutans suddely strike a major blow on the Sontaran home world, destroying their cloning facilities

>the last surviving Sontarans escape, reaching a human science facility that the Doctor happens to be visiting

>order the people there the rebuild their cloning tech

>the Doctor agrees, considering that the Rutans left unmatched would be too much of a danger to the universe

>a Rutan spy is discovered among the humans, interrogated

>we find out that the Rutans got the upper hand by joining with a surviving clan of pure blood Sontarans, who are digusted with what genetic engineering has done to their race

If making a physical mark on your body is what you have to do to appear interesting, you probably aren't that interesting. Never met an interesting person with a tattoo. Met plenty of egotistical people who thought they were interesting though.

>and that the RTD and Moffat years were more flukes of their time born of very particular, unique men in very particular, unique positions

That's usually the way any good art gets made. Like, for real, context is everything. Take Alien as an example. It's so great because of a chance confluence of factors that put Ridley, Giger, and O'Bannon in touch with each other. Although individually talented, any one of those guys working alone would have churned out something lesser, something generic. But magic happened just because circumstances blended all of their talents together into the perfect product. It happens so rarely that you've just got to appreciate it when it does and not get too hung up on expecting it to ever happen again.

If you could expand a S10 ep into a 2parter, what ep would make the best inclusion in the ep3/ep4 spot in s9? This would get rid of Under the Lake/Before the Flood and convert Bill/Nardole more or less into Clara.

Yes! I posted in the other thread that I saw one at work. Is it the close-up of Jodie Doctor? They're really going all-out with the promotion this time. I keep seeing ads on websites, too (don't keep cookies or cache). I think they learned their lesson from before or else are really trying to make a go of it this time.

I'd be inclined to agree. Hence the qualifiers, could and initially. A nice tattoo would give them something to talk about that they'd otherwise not have. I've met plenty of interesting people with tattoos, but it's never been because of and probably more oft than not, despite them.

In my experience, excessive vanity often seems to be a defense mechanism for a lack of anything worthwhile to say. You want a good conversation, find someone who doesn't seem to have looked in a mirror in the past five years. Someone with unkempt hair and missing teeth. Ask him his stance on anything, and then spend the next hour having your mind filled with all kinds of shit.

The guy with the tattoo will probably repeat something he heard on TV today, and start talking about a new album he just bought.

> find someone who doesn't seem to have looked in a mirror in the past five years. Someone with unkempt hair and missing teeth

What if a person is unkempt and doesn't really look after themselves and hasn't had a wash in five years but also has a tattoo?

It's nine o'clock on a Saturday

The regular crowd shuffles in

There's an old man sitting next to me

Makin' love to his tonic and gin

He says, "Son, can you play me a memory

I'm not really sure how it goes

But it's sad and it's sweet and I knew it complete

When I wore a younger man's clothes"

I literally explain why in the paragraph above. Will spoiler tag just in case.

> Rosa's plot and interestingness is, despite being well made, naturally restricted somewhat by the topic choice, which might not have been a problem if it wasn't after those two. They make for quite the dull opening trio to a season and especially new era attempting to grab new viewers interests and I can see the ratings falling and falling pretty far because of it. They're not bad, just boring.

Essentially, Rosa's a very delicate topic and you can't really do something like that in a lot of ways without being disrespectful in some way. Unfortunately, that makes it very predictable (from what I've seen over the past several months, everyone has long-since guessed the entire plot, even with zero information outside of Rosa Parks, even if the odd detail here and there is missing or wrong) and while the odd predictable episode is no issue, when it follows up from ep1 (mostly predictable) and ep2 (painfully predictable and/or unoriginal), that feeling is greatly exasperated.

I'm starting to wonder if the lack of spoilers is because there's been nothing to spoil. Or if I'm now just expecting too much from Doctor Who.

Little does he know all 10 episodes are predictable/unoriginal

no sir, all 11

Don't play with me like this.

The title is Stenza in India

In spite of everything, I think there's a chance that once it gets over this horrible "recruitment video" hurdle it might heave itself into doing something interesting next year. Interesting by Chib's standards, I mean.

I don't understand why everyone here keeps saying this. It's about as good as Moffat post-series 5. Unless, of course, that's exactly why people are disappointed. I was expecting an absolute trainwreck and it just turned out to be roughly more of the same but with a fresh coat of paint and a cute Doctor thrown in.

You might be right, but I can't imagine it ever coming close to the Moffat era or even the RTD era desu. I also find it kinda funny that RTD starting with S1, which was his best series, and Moffat started with S5 which is one of his best and Chibs started with…. this

It was shit

Series 8 and 9 were both better than 5, and 5 was leagues better than this

Well, fair enough. To each his own. I thought most of /who/ would be all over it because of the female Doctor.

the shakri

oh nononononononoNONONONONO

>It's about as good as Moffat post-series 5.

Moffat's run had a lot of failures but he was never as actively bland as this. And to be quite frank, I find it difficult to characterise this episode as "more of the same" when we've recently come off of an era with episodes like World Enough and Time/The Doctor Falls, Extremis, Heaven Sent, Listen, Mummy on the Orient Express…the new era of the show is less ambitious on all fronts, even down to how simplified the character of the Doctor is now.

>cute doctor

Immediately disregarded everything you've said

I would say 8 was better than 5, 5 better than this. But I think 9 was a mess except for the first part of Under the Lake and Heaven Sent. But I'm judging whole seasons compared to one episode, as well, to be fair. The series might get better as we get further in.

Woman who fell to earth was a mediocre episode with endearing character interactions

Sesska is up to world enough and time in less than two weeks

How excited are you for it?

>Year 2: Try and recapture the success of Series 2 by keeping most of the same companions but having some tragic separation for them at the end.

>Year 3: Copy RTD again by building up to a Sereis 3-style huge world-shattering finale (that all gets reset at the end). Whittaker leaves after her 3rd series if she hasn't already.

>Year 4: Possibly phase out Chibnall and replace with someone newer at this point. Get someone semi-famous to play the companion. Keep copying whatever the popular current TV trends are

>Year 5: Inevitably wind up having to take a year off at some point, let's just say it'll go here

>Year 6: 60th anniversary in 2023, the show is in such a state that we round it off with a big finale and put it back on indefinite hiatus

More than I am for the Flibnell era

I'm more excited for The Doctor Falls to watch her lose all of her favourite characters.

This. It is the age of coasting off unoriginal mediocrity.

Never mind that, the entire fucking plot was solved with the sonic screwdriver! It's like a handbook of how not to write the show

That’s true as well, but being able to watch someone react to the simm reveal who knows absolutely nothing about it doesn’t come very often (let alone someone who could actually appreciate it, given how invested she is in missy)

I would rank them

S1 >

S2 = S3 = S5 = S8 >

S4 + specials >

S6 = S10 >

S7 = S9.

you are a penguin

I dunno, I don't think she'll be that captivated by the Simm reveal in itself considering how little of a shit she gave about Tennant's era as a whole.

That’s possible

But at this point she’s enough of a fan that she might still be excited by the significance of it regardless, plus the whole “I’m worried about my future” thing given how interested she is in where the missy plot goes

But that’s largely something to look forward to in TDF

>generic, happy-go-lucky series

honestly it looks to be a bit grim with grace dying so ryan and graham can angst over it for a while, and with graham mentioning that he's in remission from cancer. (so presumably that will provide more angst later on too)

Honestly I miss the happy go lucky attitude of like, series 5

Yeah, true enough. Better yet, it was solved with the sonic screwdriver… off-screen.

I see what you mean, but Chibnall definitely isn't pursuing an RTD-like nihilism. He's literally said that the Doctor is meant to be a pillar of hope, a beacon of unity, etc., so having sad shit like cancer and dead nans at the start is clearly just there to set up "powerful" and "uplifting" stuff later.

I think it's easy to imagine the script of this ep, without too many changes, being produced as a more traditionally RTD mix of silliness and tragedy. There's enough stuff there that could have been done in a more cheesy way, including teeth-face, and even the already comedic stuff like salad man could have been pushed further. But there's a conscious choice from the producers and director to make it all feel more downbeat and serious than it really deserves.

Honestly I feel like the Chibbers era would be better with a different directing style, TWWFTE and what we've seen from the other episodes just looks like a blander version of the Disney Star Wars movies

An easy little fix for me is if tooth fella had played it a little less straight. The villain seemed like he should have been campier, since he was already a ridiculous predator parody. Doctor Who used to be fun!

Should have been played by Louis Spence

>Only just realised that World Enough and Time, The Doctor Falls, Twice Upon A Time, The Woman Who Fell to Earth and The Ghost Monument could technically be considered a five-parter.

Is he right /who/?

no. otherwise the whole of season 1 would be a massive part story.

They tie into the next episode. that's all

By that logic Smile and Thin Ice are a two-parter and like half the Hartnell and Troughton eras are 423869321-parters including a rerun of Evil of the Daleks at one point. Linear chronological connection is a very unhelpful way of designating multi-parters.

So could The End of Time/The Eleventh Hour/The Beast Below/ Victory of the Daleks

somewhat, they all do lead directly into each other.

Oh don't forget this:

>DOCTOR: You weren't there in the final days of the War. You never saw what was born. But if the Timelock's broken, then everything's coming through. Not just the Daleks, but the Skaro Degradations, the Horde of Travesties, the Nightmare Child, the Could-have-been King with his army of Meanwhiles and Never-weres. The War turned into hell. And that's what you've opened, right above the Earth. Hell is descending.

Doctor Who is a 841-parter

This kind of thing needs to stop. If you start doing this to everything you feel is somehow linked to another story, where will you end?

Doctor Who is one entire unbroken story. Every story with the same fucking quarry is a spiritual sequel to one another. Fuck it, let's make The Underwater Menace, Horns of the Nimon, Harvest of the Sycorax, Flip Flop and The Christmas Invasion one story. Timelash fits in there somewhere, I'm sure of it

great marigold tracks?

That line is better than the episode it's from

> including a rerun of Evil of the Daleks at one point

elaborate. is this some kind of "Doctor Who night on BBC2 with the Curator" logic?

>The End of the World

>The Unquiet Dead

>Aliens of London

>World War Three

Have an underrated one that literally nobody ever talks about

The Dominators / The Mind Robber and The Invasion are one 18 part story since they lead into each other.

Frontier in Space and Planet of the Daleks are one 12 part story since the end of Frontier is the literal start of Planet

Basically, there's a Trout story (I think it might be Zoe's introduction?) that ends with the Doctor telling the new companion, "okay here's a taste of what you might be in for, have you ever heard of the Daleks?", turning on a TV screen in the TARDIS and essentially playing Evil of the Daleks for her. This was a tie-in with a rerun of the story the BBC were doing.

great track, i love this.

also great, runaway bride was fun.

Ah here we go. From wikipedia

>At the end of The Wheel in Space, the Doctor used a telepathic display machine to show new companion Zoe Heriot the sort of monsters she would face if she joined the TARDIS crew, and shows a clip from the end of episode 1 of The Evil of the Daleks. Over the following weeks (bridging the gap between Seasons 5 and 6) the entire story was shown, narration over the opening scene of episode 1 reminding viewers of the reason for the repeat.

this is a surprisingly really good suite for a mediocre 2-parter.

Very very very very very very very very underrated

It's so 00s and so future-sounding and so naive, I love it

wow never knew about that but that scene always seemed weird and out of place. Deepest lore right there

holy shit, this is max comfy.

It all seems to be building up towards that massive cliffhanger with Amy being dissolved by the Doctor and waking up in the white room, so I tend to assume Gold just focused on that for inspiration and ignored the rest of the half-assed story.

The guy who plays Jay in The Inbetweeners has a youtube channel and a couple of weeks ago he apparently said that the last two people in consideration for the part of Will were Simon Bird (who obviously ended up playing him) and Matt Smith.

RTD having the Series 4 finale be an Infinity War tier crossover with every companion and spin-off show from his run only to end it on a shot of the Doctor alone in the TARDIS staring at the console was incredibly kino, but it's bizarre how that moment is bookended by some of the most ridiculous nonsense (Journey's End & The Next Doctor) in the RTD-era

Making a "fake Doctor Who spoilers" twitterbot to celebrate Angstromkino tomorrow. Any suggestions?

I'll give him credit, not having the TARDIS turn up at the end of the first ep and using an unexpected cliffhanger to start things off is a nice, fresh take. But after that you need to reintroduce the TARDIS, delaying it any further just looks like you don't want it to be part of the show.

Will we ever see a monster that has an aesthetic design? Tooth face just screams “make something gross on purpose”

I don't think you can (or should) have two stories heavy on lore and continuity and deconstructing in a row.

Basically the same happened with EoT to Eleventh Hour, regardless of quality of episodes. It went from Gallifrey, and the Master, and the Woman and fucking Time War to a story about eleventh dr who btfoing some space police from earth, while meeting a little girl.

Lowering the stakes and going for more restricted stuff isn't necessarily a bad thing.

what the fuck was up with this dude

I rated it 7/10. Generally good, but somewhat boring and nothing exceptional.

he was trump

Incestuous upper classes.

I missed the last torchwood stream, what did first time watchers think of Sleeper and To the last man?

I don't really like Sleeper, characterisation felt off and I wasn't captivated by the concept, To the last man is really nice.

Whacking off to his daughter.

>BREAKING: Jodie Whittaker lets slip that Peter Capaldi will return in series 12 as the Valeyard

This is going well so far

do you have the account up yet?

At first I thought it was a 6/10, definitely some good parts but overall just strange, would probably rate it lower now

Yeah I don't get that at all. However I did see a pic where you could see the inside and it was white. So there definitely is a prop with the right interior, but there also is one with a blue interior as well

He wanted to make his daughter immortal but he accidentally hired some cactus people and also he wrote a book or something idk

Not yet, still writing the code. Probably won't finish it tonight

That would be unironically kino

Sleeper is probably my favourite Torchwood episode bar Countrycide and CoE. The Sleepers are creepy as fuck and I'm glad that they've never come back

All it says is “in a poll”, it says nothing of the poll’s origin, demographics or sample size

imagine you got contacted by the bbc lawyer's trying to shut the account down and then /who/ has to figure out which of the fake spoilers is actually real

The Slitheen were an incredible design and the first of NuWho, literally the opposite of the half-assed Stenza design

Boring but not un-salvageable just yet.

I think The End of the World was just a chance for everyone to stretch their legs and really see what kind of stuff the production team could do, there was never any intention of having them return. It's a shame they weren't reused but sometimes less is more (Weeping Angels, Cybermen etc.)

Sleeper was a very well done invasion story, so good they redid it for the Series 9 Zygon two-parter.

I liked To The Last Man because Owen's treatment of Tosh is kind of hard to watch so it is a blessed respite to have a nice romance between her and Tommy.

We haven't actually done that stream yet, it got called off.

I have polled my arse and it says "pffffft".

But yeah, true, I guess. It really should be pulled for bullshit.

People only dislike christel dee because she’s a lesbian with short hair and that makes hets uncomfortable

Could we add a “citation needed” tag and see what happens?

I just checked and there already is one

Christel Dee is good. I find her a bit too chirpy and eager sometimes but I'm pretty sure that she's just really excited to be talking to X, Y or Z so I don't particularly blame her, really. I'd rather someone be a bit chirpy or eager than someone being bland and boring

It's been unsourced since it was first added in 2016 and had a citation needed tag for more than a year too. The original user is permabanned now so we probably won't get one.

IMHO, the original user being permabanned (for ban evasion straight after being banned) should probably speak for the believability in an unsourced statement in and of itself too.

Christel is a based moffchad and she has my eternal love for that

What if we removed it, and included in the edit description that it was an unsourced claim from a banned user

Christel dee did a better interview with Moffat than a lot of people could have done

I’m going to enjoy the mediocrity and you can’t stop me

You’re all too cynical, it’s just a kids show

do we know anything about episode 5 yet? funny that there's a who episode airing in 3 weeks and we have no idea what it is

Grace's death scene was really, really bad, guys. I can't even blame Chibnall's writing for that one because it was totally incompetently executed, it feels like nothing is happening even though a character is literally dying in front of two of her loved ones.

Space is big. Really big. You just won't believe how vastly, hugely mind-bogglingly big it is. I mean, you may think it's a long way to the post office, but that's just peanuts compared to space…

It's said that if you hold a lung full of air you can survive in the total vacuum of space for about thirty seconds – but with space being really big and all, the chances of being picked up within that time are 2 to the power of 2076775949 to 1 against…

…which, by a staggering coincidence, is also the telephone number of the Sheffield flat where Yasmin once went to a fancy dress party and met a very nice girl whom she totally failed to get off with.

I love RTD as a person but his era is shit why is this

I remember the exact moment I realized who Razor was. I was enjoying the episode, and I knew the Master would be in either this or the next one, so that was in the back of my mind already. And partway through his seduction of Bill I remember thinking "This character's fun, and interesting in a way modern Who characters aren't anymore. He reminds me of Binro, or Tremas. They used to have characters like this back in Classic Who, of course half the time they turned out to be the Master in disguise." And then, having thought all of that silently, I still clapped my hand over my mouth in reaction.

His concept of Doctor Who was too rad for you

haha, that's a good one. I remember watching WEaT and when Razor showed up thinking "Man he looks familiar…" and I kept going back and forth "wait is that the Master? No can't be the Master? Oh wait is that the Master?" until the end

what is that gif from?

rad more like bad amirite

I realised it a minute into his first scene. Only because there was a voice clip of him speaking in a trailer and I had identified that as Simm

Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy

I feel he's just on the cusp. His delivery of a lot of his lines feels like the actor probably knew what he was doing, but his first scene is so deadly serious that trying to swing from "You will never know" to "GOOD LUCK!" just fell flat.

The Zygon Kate in Day of the Doctor had the same problem, big campy villainy isn't really a note that Jemma Redgrave can hit as well as, say, Peter Capaldi or Ingrid Oliver.

ah right, thought that looked familiar

RTD is a constant battle between pure kino and populist pleasing. It's especially clear in series 4 where you get Midnight, Turn Left and Stolen Earth and then it becomes drivel in Journey's End

What are your favorite and least favorite episodes of his? Both ones he wrote and episodes of his era?

It's possible you just have bad taste.

Chibnall Who is so trash that it's giving me a yearning to watch RTD era again and actually appreciate it for what it did well

the doctor told grace and graham not to come back

grace ignored that to try and be a hero

but she didn't save anybody - the tentacle ball was not shown to be a threat at all. She mentions something about it trying to knock down the crane, but we don't see the crane getting damaged at all

by the time she kills the tentacle ball, tim shaw had already been killed so the threat was gone

she literally accomplished nothing except for killing herself

Davros is a 'face' for the daleks, Davros is who the Doctor actually talks to, he represents them. Sarff is a humanoid figure with a face, and seemingly a personality, but he's also bunch of snakes.

KARL: I am important!

DOCTOR: You had no right to do that.

I thought that Tim Shaw was a creative concept, but nothing special.

I thought the Doctor was just as wonderful as she always is, but could do with a radically different approach to the character besides the gender change.

I thought it was great, but my expectations were set too high.

>I thought that Tim Shaw was a creative concept

A monster that collects teeth hasn't been done very much at all, save for the Channel Zero promos.

I personally don't find such a concept interesting beyond being a cheap gross-out gimmick

The part I found interesting was that it was a ritual to use teeth as a prize of conquest, further illustrating the universe of the show and its inhabitants' societies and customs.

but knowing that didn't add any value to the story being told, it was just an expository lore dump

I disagree that it was a lore-dump, it was showing the motivations of this character, which came from the society of his home-planet weighing on his better judgements. Motivation is key in this case.

everything related to teeth could have been removed from the episode and it wouldn't have altered the plot at all. If you were talking about the concept of a race that hunts humans for sport or whatever then that would be an example of lore that added meaningful context to the motivations of the villain, but the same doesn't apply to the teeth stuff

I'd do it.

Woah, that's based.

>the Disney Star Wars movies are genuinely the best looking blockbusters around today, bar none. For all of their faults, cinematography/directing is not one of them.

I really wonder how many blockbusters you see.

Great idea but laughably terribly done. No wonder McGann nearly left.

We haven't done that stream yet, we'll do it Monday if that works for everyone.

I hate this line of thinking. Kids deserve kino too. It's an insane world when Disney makes more intelligent movies for kids than adults but that's where we live now.

Nobody is trying to stop you, this is something that endears massive eyerolls on my part from fans of things here; people not enjoying something isn't a campaign to change your mind, it's just them expressing their opinion, just as you do.

It has a hilariously awkward, shoehorned speech that says outright in the text "we're honouring what we've been!" so that must surely count!

>Disney makes more intelligent movies for kids than adults

want to elaborate on this one?

it's better to exchange interesting ideas in depth than just mention them with a superficial summary, when someone is actually interested in the topic

Care to elaborate?

Not worth pointing out.

stop trying to make this a meme

it's not going to be a meme

While it'd be more fair to characterise the MCU as more or less four quadrant, instead of just for adults, it still is mostly adults seeing it. But you look at the films positioned explicitly to kids and, apart from solely-exist-to-sell-toys dreck like Cars, they nearly invariably tell a more nuanced story at a higher level. What Coco was saying about death and family has more weight and meaning that the entirety of the MCU, even if the MCU didn't operate as a machine just to endlessly sputter out more of itself. And it's not a fluke, you look back through that line of films and they all tell stories with some kind of actual meaning told with some level of maturity that doesn't undercut itself to sell more movies; Zootopia, Inside Out, etc. I don't love any of these movies for what it's worth, but it's clear to me the kiddie movies actually mean something, whereas the MCU just manages to fool people into meaning something by using window dressing that narrativesely cribs from other sources people will remember (e.g. The Winter Soldier feels like it's "about something" because the second act feels like a spy thriller and the first act has characters ask some apolitical but weighty sounding questions that the third act ignores completely but by then there are CGI extravaganzas extraordinaire so people are wowed enough to just cling to the tangibles of each act, which translates into feeling there was coherence).

"Elaborateposting" isn't even a thing, that's literally just how talking to people can work, dw anon I'm happy you made such a post, I do the same often.

Can you elaborate on this? I'm rather confused what you mean.

Any labs for this?

i would like hunter to elaborate on THIS

A completely valid point. I wonder what the thought process is - whether the writers on kids movies get more creative freedom so they actually try to 'be' something rather than just meet checkboxes, or if it's some ironic attempt at making the movies appeal more to the adults who have to sit through them (when actual adult-targeted movies have less depth)

What was the narrative purpose of Karl's affirmations?

It's character building. He's a typical mayoid with no self confidence

it's a setup for a funneh joek. He says that he's valued and that somebody out there wants him, and that turns out to be true in a way he doesn't expect.

I agree that taken systemically 11's regen falls into a pattern of NewWho oversignifying the regens but when I look at any individual element of it, it all works and all is necessary for the story being told there. 10 is best, tennant is the best actor and RTD made him a fully fleshed out character with wonderful characteristics that were also his most glaring flaws and fucked things up for him a lot, whereas 11 was a meme doctor and 12 flip flopped

That’s fucking adorable

Which is Grahams episode?

The bus episode

gideon is like graham is graham was based

Is Yasmin meant to be indian? I heard the actress isn't but it seems like a weird coincidence to have an india episode without an indian companion

No! McGann is the cutest! Jodie’s pretty good too, though.

ryan also isn't african american but that's not stopping them associating him with rosa parks

I'm p certain that Ep 4 is the Witch ep, tho.

In the climax the Doctor and company will foil the Stenza plot, turning the beam orange. Someone will refer to the orange beam as a "pillar of hope".

>People always get it wrong with Time Lords. We take forever to die. Even if we're too injured to regenerate, every cell in our bodies keeps trying. Dying properly can take days. That's why we like to die among our own kind. They know not to bury us early. I think, in my current condition, it'll take me about a day and a half to reach the top of the tower. I think. If I'm lucky, I have a day and a half. I have to do this, Clara. It's the only way. I have to be strong. I should have known from the very beginning. Of course. The portrait of you, the creature from my own nightmares. This place is my own bespoke torture chamber, intended for me only. And all those skulls in the water. How could there be other prisoners in my Hell? The answer, of course, is there never were any other prisoners. And the stars, they weren't in the wrong place, and I haven't time travelled. I've just been here a very, very long time. Every room resets. Remember I told you that? Every room reverts to its original condition. Logically, the teleporter should do the same. Teleporter. Fancy word. Just like 3D printers, really, except they break down living matter and information, and transmit it. All you have to do is add energy. The room has reset, returned to its original condition when I arrived. That means there's a copy of me still in the hard drive. Me, exactly as I was, when I first got here, seven thousand years ago. All I have to find is some energy. And all you need for energy is something to burn. How long can I keep doing this, Clara? Burning the old me, to make a new one?

The Zygon Invasion| The Zygon Inversion

Sleep No More | Face the Raven

if it doesnt say to be continued at the end its not a two parter

based and parterpilled

You joke, but I saw a thread on TARDIS Data Bore where they were unironically debating this.

One person even said that having ‘to be continued’ at the end was the SOLE DETERMINER of what made something a multi-parter in NuWhu.

And they were 100% right

that's true though

if it doesn't have a "to be continued", it's just seralized continuity rather than a multi-part story

lol, this is probably the funniest of the Doctor's asocial jabs and it got cut

That counts to. So does ‘the doctor will return’. Basically they were making the claim that if had a message along those lines at the end, it was a multi-parter, and if it didn’t it wasn’t. Not sure if they were trolling, but they seemed serious. For all I know they could have been of us though.

The Girl Who Died deleted scene where they talk about Danny. It's a great scene, should've been in. The Woman Who Lived has some cool deleted stuff too like >>116301.

Imagine an Enemy of the World sequel in series 11 or 12 that deals with Salamander being replaced in the power balance by a Hillary Clinton type villain played by Jodie Whittaker.

consider a s9 edit that makes all the 2parters feature length single stories (editing the minisodes into the premiere, cutting out the credits and whatnot of the other 2parters to make them flow as one thing) and integrates all the deleted scenes

Ah shit that typo is gonna derail any potential responses to my post.

(Or should that be, too my post)

Crazy idea: editing Sleep No More and Face the Raven together so they keep intercutting the whole time, to make the parallels more evident

m8 you wrote it correctly, the Jodie quote is her saying it wrong

Insert ‘more female oppressors’ joke here

That's just the TARDIS translator being gone and Jodie's a bit rusty with english

Yeah, I was talking about the typo I made when I wrote ‘to’ instead of ‘too’. I thought you were alluding to that.

god what were they THINKING

monka fucking S

They wanted something completely different to the classic console to show how radical RTD who would be

It’s fine, my mistake for misinterpreting your joke.

I'll do that. Some madlad has been uploading all the blu rays with features and commentaries, series 10 is the only one he hasn't done yet.

Yeah, it's a shame. There's also Knock Knock with the writer and the director. But I don't care about that one and I kind of doubt /who/ does enough to stream it.

:OOOOOOO That sounds great. Not all the deleted scenes are good though. Before the Flood has a particularly tedious one.

Sounds very Neo. Personally I think Sleep No More should me more found footage, not less, but could be good. I do wish they cut the credits and next time from Sleep No More.

the 2000s were the era of "remake the old sci-fi thing but do it 'properly' now that we have cgi effects"

hence a gloomier and more "visceral" concept of the TARDIS
