>As we’ve already alluded to, the script is uneasy with Doctor Who, trying to smuggle it in unnoticed. A great many words are spent making excuses for the sonic screwdriver, perhaps buckling under the pressure of spending so much time re-introducing it and having it be so central to the plot (which is the real problem, if we’re honest, but Chib’s gotta sell those toys!). The challenge of navigating between Chibnallian realism and the fantasy mode is met by skipping that step altogether and just flicking the switch from one to the other then back again; nowhere else is this more evident than immediately after Grace’s death, when the episode almost makes a point of no longer caring about what happened in the main story or even the moment of the death itself. Thanks to that, its diversion into a funereal atmosphere, eulogies, and cancer, comes off as decidedly undercooked – not a cathartic culmination of the game we’ve been playing up until that point, but changing the rules without telling us, leaving us just passively watching a set of moves on the board and not quite knowing how we got there.

>Chibnall has concurred that he “love[s] Doctor Who as a big, popular, mainstream, accessible show […] So I wanted to make sure that every member of the audience felt they had a relatable character, an access point. Hopefully it means that the show can resonate with the broadest possible audience […]”

>And yet there’s something else going on here.

>Because what else do we know about what Chibnall is trying to do with Series 11? He’s called it “Doctor Who in an era of Netflix”. He’s said “you’ve got to keep up with all the DC shows in the US”. What exactly does that mean? You can see evidence that these things are manifesting in the new episode; almost everything about the way it uses images and sound are perfectly in line with the average American sci-fi/fantasy TV drama, and in some places their cornier costumed-hero counterparts. It’s all blue-orange contrasts, luscious scenery shots, throbbing ambient electronic music (with the occasional theme kicking in that sounds like an advert for a bank), baddies in tactical armour, a dour tone. I see Americans talking about how it doesn’t have “that over-the-top BBC style” any more. So, all in all, it would seem to be a job well done.

>But how does any of this relate to making the show more relatable and accessible? Isn’t it just making the show like everything else on televi– Ah.

>the Doctor is still just as inflated in self-importance, just as fetishised by the narrative, as she was when she was still David Tennant. She’s still far more than “just a traveller”. She is still just as utterly domineering of every single other character, she’s still the centre of the bloody universe who boasts about adjusting the universal scales and is adored by all. She just acts cute about it now.

>And, contrary to whatever we may have told ourselves, and whatever Chibnall would like us to think, this episode isn’t really about the death of Grace. Not even remotely. It’s about giving Thirteen all of her designated Doctor Who moments. It’s about playing that insipid, gushing new leitmotif every time she ticks one of those boxes. It’s about insisting to the viewers that Doctor Who no longer risks damaging your expectations with strangeness and deviation, but is instead committed to following an orderly template. Everything else, the tragedy, the human struggle, the loss, is just thinly-imagined decoration that someone thinks will do a job that a corporation demands done.

>The show’s newfound humanity is no more than a mask for a robotic construct. Nu-NuWho, in its entirety, is little more than a front – a shiny, Netflix-ready cover draped over Doctor Who, attempting to stifle all of its bizarre nonsense. The result of this is that the good old instincts are being suppressed just enough to not help, and the bad old instincts aren’t being suppressed quite enough to not still harm. The show is acting like it’s gained a new lease of life when inside, it’s choking on the same old fumes.

>So of course Grace is dead. Because having a dead woman to mourn is more important than doing something genuinely fresh. She didn’t meet the criteria for desirability, whereas Thirteen does, aggressively so. Thirteen is nothing but desirability. “Pillar of hope”. I have no interest in Thirteen. In spite of everything, she is not a more human or relatable Doctor. She’s a collection of humanlike gestures. A desired value, not a person. Her “humanity” is so manufactured to please that she seems less human than ever, especially so soon after watching Twelve grapple with suicidal ideation (one of the most human feelings there is). Sorting out fair play throughout the universe? Fuck off with that.

Bravo. Excellent piece. Just some of my favourite bits here.

Jesus Christ, that "Faux-Woke" section is cancer. The show is bending over backwards to please people like him and he's just saying "not good enough" to every single little thing. Then again, all it would take is hiring one eccentric to shake things back up again.

That's usually the way any good art gets made. Like, for real, context is everything. Take Alien as an example. It's so great because of a chance confluence of factors that put Ridley, Giger, and O'Bannon in touch with each other. Although individually talented, any one of those guys working alone would have churned out something lesser, something generic. But magic happened just because circumstances blended all of their talents together into the perfect product. It happens so rarely that you've just got to appreciate it when it does and not get too hung up on expecting it to ever happen again.

I literally explain why in the paragraph above. Will spoiler tag just in case.

> Rosa's plot and interestingness is, despite being well made, naturally restricted somewhat by the topic choice, which might not have been a problem if it wasn't after those two. They make for quite the dull opening trio to a season and especially new era attempting to grab new viewers interests and I can see the ratings falling and falling pretty far because of it. They're not bad, just boring.

Essentially, Rosa's a very delicate topic and you can't really do something like that in a lot of ways without being disrespectful in some way. Unfortunately, that makes it very predictable (from what I've seen over the past several months, everyone has long-since guessed the entire plot, even with zero information outside of Rosa Parks, even if the odd detail here and there is missing or wrong) and while the odd predictable episode is no issue, when it follows up from ep1 (mostly predictable) and ep2 (painfully predictable and/or unoriginal), that feeling is greatly exasperated.

I'm starting to wonder if the lack of spoilers is because there's been nothing to spoil. Or if I'm now just expecting too much from Doctor Who.

I think it's easy to imagine the script of this ep, without too many changes, being produced as a more traditionally RTD mix of silliness and tragedy. There's enough stuff there that could have been done in a more cheesy way, including teeth-face, and even the already comedic stuff like salad man could have been pushed further. It's said that if you hold a lung full of air you can survive in the total vacuum of space for about thirty seconds – but with space being really big and all, the chances of being picked up within that time are 2 to the power of 2076775949 to 1 against…

…which, by a staggering coincidence, is also the telephone number of the Sheffield flat where Yasmin once went to a fancy dress party and met a very nice girl whom she totally failed to get off with.

They used to have characters like this back in Classic Who, of course half the time they turned out to be the Master in disguise." While it'd be more fair to characterise the MCU as more or less four quadrant, instead of just for adults, it still is mostly adults seeing it. But you look at the films positioned explicitly to kids and, apart from solely-exist-to-sell-toys dreck like Cars, they nearly invariably tell a more nuanced story at a higher level. What Coco was saying about death and family has more weight and meaning that the entirety of the MCU, even if the MCU didn't operate as a machine just to endlessly sputter out more of itself. And it's not a fluke, you look back through that line of films and they all tell stories with some kind of actual meaning told with some level of maturity that doesn't undercut itself to sell more movies; Zootopia, Inside Out, etc. I don't love any of these movies for what it's worth, but it's clear to me the kiddie movies actually mean something, whereas the MCU just manages to fool people into meaning something by using window dressing that narrativesely cribs from other sources people will remember (e.g. The Winter Soldier feels like it's "about something" because the second act feels like a spy thriller and the first act has characters ask some apolitical but weighty sounding questions that the third act ignores completely but by then there are CGI extravaganzas extraordinaire so people are wowed enough to just cling to the tangibles of each act, which translates into feeling there was coherence).

(Karl is listening to You Are Valued motivational audio on his phone (I think).)

RECORDING: I am special.

KARL: I am special.

RECORDING: I am valued.

KARL: I am valued.

RECORDING: Somebody out there wants me.

KARL: Somebody out there wants me.

***

DOCTOR: Oi! Karl from the train. Up and over! Up and over!

KARL: You have got to be kidding. I am valued. I am special.

(Karl climbs out of the hatch on the top of his cab. The anemometer is going like the clappers.)

***

DOCTOR: Pop on over.

KARL: Okay. I am special.

DOCTOR: Yes, you are.

KARL: I am brave, and I am gonna jump.

DOCTOR: No time like the present.

(But just as Karl has launched himself into the air, Tzim-Sha grabs him by the collar.)

***

DOCTOR: Left to rot? How completely obscene.

TZIM-SHA: They're not important.

KARL: Hey! I'm important.

***

(The Doctor throws the recall circuit to Tzim-Sha, who has started to melt. Karl kicks at him and Tzim-Sha falls through the broken hand-rail, putting the recall circuit onto his chest and vanishing.)

KARL: I am important!

DOCTOR: You had no right to do that.

Moffat:

>People always get it wrong with Time Lords. We take forever to die. Even if we're too injured to regenerate, every cell in our bodies keeps trying. Dying properly can take days. That's why we like to die among our own kind. They know not to bury us early. I think, in my current condition, it'll take me about a day and a half to reach the top of the tower. I think. If I'm lucky, I have a day and a half. I have to do this, Clara. It's the only way. I have to be strong. I should have known from the very beginning. Of course. The portrait of you, the creature from my own nightmares. This place is my own bespoke torture chamber, intended for me only. And all those skulls in the water. How could there be other prisoners in my Hell? The answer, of course, is there never were any other prisoners. And the stars, they weren't in the wrong place, and I haven't time travelled. I've just been here a very, very long time. Every room resets. Remember I told you that? Every room reverts to its original condition. Logically, the teleporter should do the same. Teleporter. Fancy word. Just like 3D printers, really, except they break down living matter and information, and transmit it. All you have to do is add energy. The room has reset, returned to its original condition when I arrived. That means there's a copy of me still in the hard drive. Me, exactly as I was, when I first got here, seven thousand years ago. All I have to find is some energy. And all you need for energy is something to burn. How long can I keep doing this, Clara? Burning the old me, to make a new one?

You joke, but I saw a thread on TARDIS Data Bore where they were unironically debating this.

One person even said that having ‘to be continued’ at the end was the SOLE DETERMINER of what made something a multi-parter in NuWhu.

And they were 100% right

 No.116290

that's true though

if it doesn't have a "to be continued", it's just seralized continuity rather than a multi-part story

 No.116296

>>116292

That counts to. So does ‘the doctor will return’. Basically they were making the claim that if had a message along those lines at the end, it was a multi-parter, and if it didn’t it wasn’t. Not sure if they were trolling, but they seemed serious. For all I know they could have been of us though.

What's the tedious Before the Flood scene about/like?

I always enjoy your posts.

SNM absolutely should drop those from the end, it has so much precision with the altered intro at the start, it should be complete cut to black after Rasmussen crumbles.

the 2000s were the era of "remake the old sci-fi thing but do it 'properly' now that we have cgi effects"

hence a gloomier and more "visceral" concept of the TARDIS

See for yourself. What was Whithouse thinking with this shit? Was he trying to directly "do" Moffat, or at least what he considers Moffat's style? It feels more like an embarrassing take on Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban.
