Monday and Thursday?

20 years from now the Stenza will be remembered as fondly as the Daleks, if not more fondly.

Why can't we still do Sundays? I realise we skipped last week but that was premiere day and nobody's hyped for S11 any more.

Isn't our regular TW time the same time as Doctor Who? Some regulars wouldn't be able to do that.

I'm sure it's a bit earlier than that. Don't we usually do Torchwood at either 4 or 5 whereas Doctor Who comes on at 6.55 today

>Any good enough to share?

Don't know if I'd use the word "good", but the YTPs from this channel fill me with joy

Side note, have you seen the Breaking Bad webisodes? They're unironically wackier than the Doctor Who ones, it's surreal. I had no idea they even existed until today.

We normally do TW around 4-5 hours from now, would that still be workable for people do you mean? We'd need to hear from TheOncomingStorm, Ingiga, Morphant, Sloath, etc.

>The direction of each scene feels very different from what we’re used to in Doctor Who. Mark Tonderai brings the audience into the story effortlessly with each carefully thought out shot, blending the camera so closely with the characters, it’s as if they’re talking to you or vice versa. This can be beautiful but sometimes brings you out of the story with how it chops and changes.

What was meant by this

Why would I be excited just because the viewing figures are high?

A certain type of person might feel excited and positive about something purely because other people are.

>the era with the lowest viewing figures is the most kino

>the era with the highest viewed premiere in 10 years is dogshit

>The last few scenes will leave you awestruck as the interior of the ship is finally revealed.

I like Beth but that review is shallow to the point of uselessness, I imagine spoiler rules are a big part of that but that paragraph about direction is incoherent in how nonspecific it is.

That was technically an orange nuke from the ground, not a blue beam from the sky.

>This is Doctor Who Saves The Ratings. Doctor Who Saves The Merchandise Sales. Doctor Who, hewn completely and utterly to a corporate vision – BBC Worldwide’s Great and Glorious Five Year Plan – instead of sitting in that curious and oblique space at the edge of the mainstream where it broadly does whatever the hell it wants.

>blending the camera so closely with the characters, it’s as if they’re talking to you or vice versa

So this is how normies process cinema…

It sounds like she's describing some sort of Peep Show thing, which would be a pretty based technique if they actually used it

>BBC drama controller Piers Wenger, who had a brief run as a Doctor Who producer around Series 5 (which there are some rather unsavoury rumours about regarding his attitude, I’ll leave it at that), recently described the new Doctor with this official comment: “Gone is the daffiness and idiosyncrasy of her predecessors in favour of a Doctor with energy, spark and relatability.” I want to skim over the fact he obviously loathes Doctor Who for a moment and focus on that last word – relatability. Chibnall has concurred that he “love[s] Doctor Who as a big, popular, mainstream, accessible show […] So I wanted to make sure that every member of the audience felt they had a relatable character, an access point. Hopefully it means that the show can resonate with the broadest possible audience […]”

>This is all part of a strategy to rebuild the viewerbase; a strategy that means making the show accessible and relatable, so it can be back at the so-called ‘heart of the national conversation’ like Broadchurch and, er, Bodyguard. (Don’t get me started.) Hence the grasping at RTD’s straws we see in the first episode, the “family” of companions, the strident mundanity of it all, the Doctor’s overtly humanising touches, and of course the reveal that the episode is really all about something as sorrowfully common as losing a loved one. Doctor Who has lots of heart, soul, and humanity now. I may seem as though I dislike that, but I don’t. There are many interpretations of Doctor Who, and this is just another one.

>And yet there’s something else going on here.

>Because what else do we know about what Chibnall is trying to do with Series 11? He’s called it “Doctor Who in an era of Netflix”. He’s said “you’ve got to keep up with all the DC shows in the US”. What exactly does that mean? You can see evidence that these things are manifesting in the new episode; almost everything about the way it uses images and sound are perfectly in line with the average American sci-fi/fantasy TV drama, and in some places their cornier costumed-hero counterparts. It’s all blue-orange contrasts, luscious scenery shots, throbbing ambient electronic music (with the occasional theme kicking in that sounds like an advert for a bank), baddies in tactical armour, a dour tone. I see Americans talking about how it doesn’t have “that over-the-top BBC style” any more. So, all in all, it would seem to be a job well done. But how does any of this relate to making the show more relatable and accessible? Isn’t it just making the show like everything else on televi– Ah.

>The jig is, somewhat, up. There’s a unifying link between everything – the promise of a “pillar of hope for these times”; the promises that it’s a perfect jumping-on point and you don’t even have to watch it in order; the promise that the Doctor is more relatable; the assertions that the show needs to look and feel like anything else that happens to be popular, from Game of Thrones to Black Mirror – it’s a corporation’s idea of how to increase the viewership and appeal to as many people as possible. The “broadest possible audience,” as Chibby puts it. Less vision, more calculation.

>What is “relatability” – or, if you like, “humanity”… – pushed for its own sake, if not a fear of alienation and thus loss of money? This is an industry, arguably an entire global economic system, that feeds us regurgitations of ourselves because it knows we lap them up. Even the insistence upon “humanity” has a hidden caveat; it has to mean punishingly plain people like Yaz, because oddballs like Clara Oswald are the wrong kind of human and risk putting some people off. There’s zero conflict between the desire for relatability and the desire for aesthetic homogeneity; all of it is just the safe route. RTD certainly wasn’t playing it safe when he boldly cross-cut Dalek battles on a spaceship countless years in the future with Rose storming out of a chip shop and Jackie borrowing a heavy-duty vehicle (I doubt Chibnall will be serving up anything quite so confrontational). But that proved popular. And emulating things you know to be popular is both safe and boring.

>So, between Childs and Chibnall, which of them is getting it wrong? The answer, of course, is both, and Chibnall’s just as complicit in the suffocating of his own (already kind of dull) material in a drab miasma. In a featurette (the same one in which Chibnall, hilariously, credits Childs with a “great range of tone”), Childs describes how he told Chibnall and co. what he wanted to do with the show and “they were thinking exactly the same thing”. To Chibnall, it no longer even matters what his own script is doing as long as it can be bashed into a certain stylistic mould – we’ve gone well beyond style-over-substance and are now closer to style-versus-substance.

>I want to skim over the fact he obviously loathes Doctor Who for a moment

Oh the irony

The blog that line is from is filled with posts gushing in great detail over Doctor Who.

I love Doctor Who in the aftermath of a great event allowing itself to cool down, making it through the darkest part of the night and visually coming back down to the show as unburdened by its arcs and resolved character trauma.

>"Where was I? Oh, that's right - Barcelona!"

>The Doctor, Amy and Rory in the TARDIS at the end of The Big Bang

>The Curator scene in Day of the Doctor

>The Doctor excitedly falling back into his usual pattern thanks to Clara's mystery both throughout and at the end of The Snowmen

>The Doctor in the TARDIS at the end of Hell Bent

The Doctor in the TARDIS at the end of Hell Bent was as powerful and perfect an ending to the show as 2's regenerate in The War Games was. Brilliant stuff. Everyone on the top of their game (er, except for the sonic designer/inserter).

Series 11- Showrunner: BBC Studios android CHR15 CH18NA11

Perhaps, but I don't think Logopolis/Survival/EOT would be good/fitting endings, if you know what I mean, they work functionally as ending points but they do no actual meaningful work of ending the show like War Games and Hell Bent do. The War Games rips apart the entire show, Hell Bent puts the show back together (in two forms), those are fitting moments to end on, but stuff like EOT just makes a grand show of 10's era ending, nothing about the actual structure of the show itself or anything like that.

You are scraping through over ten years of previous serials in comparison with a cinegrid of dozens of shots from ~5 episodes of this year's series alone.

I do get what you mean, maybe it just coincides with sometime every decade there's naturally an ending point or point where a big time creative writes their big finale.

Someone got verged at me the other day for even just asking them to substantiate their arguments against criticisms of Series 11; it's unreal.

Half of those wouldn't even count for orange and blue any more than the TARDIS console room pics you said didn't count. Specifically, both on the far right (time.jpg, sheffield.jpg), and the feet in the top right of lookmaimdirecting.jpg. ep1.jpg is by far the best example and even then it's not that bad relative to what we've had before.

Logopolis and EoT would be more fitting endings-to-the-entirety-of-Doctor-Who if the Doctor didn't regenerate at the end of them, or if they were altered somehow.

Actually picture this - the Doctor finally merges with the Watcher, regenerates, and up pops a woman. End show. Delightful cliffhanger that sets off a whole new world of possibilities without actually going into them and ruining it

>it's not that bad

S11's new tagline?

I've said similar things before that Logopolis would have been better served by more of a seismic regen, a young Doctor just wasn't enough. That would have actually been a really good, fitting point to change the Doctor's gender or race, Tom even flagged noticing that.

Bottom left on sheffield.jpg looks great by the way, I really liked that shot. Finest POV shot i've seen in a while in dr who.

I actually meant middle left, the tronesque one, didn't realise that it's 6 pictures and not 4.

Sheffield shots remind me of Cardiff esablishing shots in Torchwood, especially in s1e1 and early S1 in general. Although Torchwood still achieved sense of location better IMO.

Torchwood used those aerial shots of Cardiff a lot (and had Jack on the roof as a repeating thing) in different ways which really focused the sense of location yeah. Once we get to Miracle Day it will be interesting to talk about how the sense of place shifted.

By the way, where do you fall on the Sunday or Monday debate for TW streams?

Would a black and white episode in the modern day be good?

It could be, I imagine if there was one there'd be a damn good reason for it and that alone would imply some creativity.

I just realised that even Karl's fucking phone screen has a blue interface and yellow album cover. That's just weird.

Wow what the fuck?? both blue AND orange on a SCREEN??? fucking hacks!!!!!

There is a momentary cropping up of the orange/blue fascination (or at least, a hell of a lot of blue and some warm light) in the early Moff era, it's particularly noticeable between the end of S5 and first half of S6 until AGMGTW. Pretty much every Toby Haynes episode uses it gorgeously, especially A Christmas Carol.

Arguably the bigger problem with Time and the Rani is that it doesn't feel like enough of a new show. The rest of S24 fixes that though.

Series 11 episode 4 synopsis revealed!

“Something’s happening with the spiders in this city.”

The Doctor, Yaz, Graham and Ryan find their way back to Yorkshire – and Yaz’s family – only to find something is stirring amidst the eight-legged arachnid population of Sheffield.

Knew ep4 wasn't Witchfinders.

Kino. I like spooder episodes.

The title of series 11 episode 4 is ‘Arachnids in the UK’

audibly what the fuck?ed that's fucking hilarious

What the fuck does this mean?

So how are the Stenza involved? What are they doing to the arachnids in the UK™?

Episode 4: Ryan Sinclair in Bel Air

No more kino titles anymore. We just get a description of the episode. Can't wait for the finale "Time Travel"

Lads this is the pun. it's all pop culture references from here on out

Tim Shaws cousin is running around squishing the spider population of the UK causing an arachnid uprising

>punk music

delet this right now

>ads contain Macklemore

>any music references in the series itself are pure boomer

What did they mean by this?

Absolutely cringe, and I love punk. And this is the second pop-culture-reference title in the series so far.

Ranking based purely on episode titles:

The Witchfinders > Rosa > The Woman Who Fell to Earth > The Ghost Monument > Arachnids in the UK

>no The Indian Element

>no A Man in Labour (actually good pun)

>preys on normal human fears in a creative way

>lol spiders scary guis

Maybe the sheer ridiculousness of the title "Arachnids in the UK" suggests that the episode might have some character? Maybe? It's not looking good lads. Do we know who's writing it?

Arachnids in the UK

Guest starring Chris Noth and Shobna Gulati.

Written by Chris Chibnall.

Directed by Sallie Aprahamian.

Yaz family is nice. I wonder if woman scientist is her sister or something.

I get Lazarus Experiment vibe from synopsis.

No. No that's fake, right? That has to be fake. They can't be giving us another Chibnall episode this soon. Where are the new writers? No.

RTD "co-wrote" Unquiet Dead too. And I won't be surprised if Moffat edited Victory of the Daleks.

I wouldn't mind "Arachnids in the UK" as a title if the ep was doing anything with the reference (as boomer as that would be), but it's not, Chibnall really is just reaching for the most cynical vague familiarity possible even if most of his zoomer audience won't get it. >Sandifer's a McCoychad

Based as fuck. Only ones I'd have a point of contention with are Power of the Daleks, Impossible/Day. I'm very confused as to the inclusion of Paradise Towers, is there a link I can read where she explains why it's placed at No. 6?

Gareth Roberts is well known for attacking transgender people on his Twitter, and also has tweeted derisively about Sandifer even pre-transition, so if you follow Sandifer with an acount called "GarethRobertsFan" it just looks like you are there for harassment.

Hey Nilso, just a friendly reminder that Sandifer's outspokenly, proudly LGBT and we all know what you think about those kinds of people.

Her bottom 10, which might also be of interest (the last listed being the very worst):

Arc of Infinity>Fear Her>Resurrection of the Daleks>Underworlds>the TV Movie>Warriors of the Deep>Attack of the Cybermen>Death to the Daleks>The Twin Dilemma>The Celestial Toymaker

This is only television episodes and specials mind you

There's no specific reasonings listed for the placements, but there are her pieces on those stories. The one on Power is particularly good

>preemptively correcting the record on why the series failed before it even has

Saward pleasingly btfo there :)

I never actually noticed that Astronaut/Moon was that high. I think it's a great story but it always surprises me a little how much praise it gets (e.g. from Neo) and especially from Sandifer whose standards are pretty specific. Like what's so alchemical about that story in particular? It sits oddly alongside The Rescue, The Mind Robber, Fenric, Ribos, etc. imo.

Is Loz even watching the new season or making reviews?

"Chibnall is a bad writer so a series by Chibnall will be bad because of him" is hardly a grasping take.

I can't recall Sandy's take on it offhand, not sure if alchemy plays into it, but I think it's some of the best-executed DW there's ever been, it's firing off on every cylinder and just exploding with ideas and meaning and beauty all in such a specifically Doctor Who way. It's Moff on coke.

We should all list our top 10 episodes! I'll have a think, Ihope you do too

Good stuff, thanks

Pure and utter projection. I might disagree with Sandifer on some takes that she's written about but I've never done the most obvious and rude thing and deliberately misgendered her.

Based Nilso.

If we're going into the "top 10 list" thing, are we strictly limiting it to TV or is a bit of leeway either side fine?

I think strictly TV is more fun because it's harder.

World Enough and Time's title isn't a joke per se, it's a literary reference. Arachnids in the UK expects a different response from its viewer as it's a pop culture reference.

This, Arachnids is also a play on words, WE&T is just a direct quote (and I'd argue that the slight scholarliness of the reference is intentional, Moffat knows most of his audience won't get it).

fucked me up the arse

I doubt it desu. You don't need to be a good actor to be a good Doctor, you just need to play yourself and be an entertaining person, which we know Jodie is. Arguably Jodie's weakness in ep 1 is that she was made to do too much post-regenerative hyperness and it wasn't natural.

because chib's a dirty lib who believes in the great (wo)man theory of history. no rosa parks, no rights for african americans ever.

Time travel stories about "plots to change the course of history" never make any fucking sense and invariably pivot around an establishment fetishism of certain events/special people who "changed everything" (i.e. led to the current world, which is assumed to be the "good outcome") coupled with an ignorance of the complicated ongoing chain of events and the world around them.

Who Doctor Hue here?

So, new Doctor Who: I *really* liked it. And not just the new Doctor (she's great, no question), but the new visual language of the show as well. The way it's shot and composed is very fresh. It feels like a whole new series again.

It didn't feel like television. Well, it … did and it didn't. The look was … ugh. I don't have the words. More immediate? More intimate? Higher contrast, definitely. Angle choices were also really striking as well. It didn't look like Doctor Who, and that's good.

Whitaker's going to do a fine job. The Doctor seems happy to be the Doctor again. And yeah, she still has a little sadness, but not like before. She feels like she took what the 12th Doctor told her to heart. This is gonna be *fun* again.

I enjoyed the 9th Doctor coming to terms with trauma. It was new and interesting. I … was still on board with the 10th coming to terms with it. I was less on board with 11. By the time of 12, it seemed like they didn't know what else to do with the Doctor anymore.

Each of those Doctors had fun moments and adventure and excitement, but the core of the character kept coming back to, "Oh, my tortured past." And that can be good in a story, *important* in a story, but it can wear out its welcome over time.

What's up with these instances of Genesis being in people's top 10s?

Nash has bizarre taste. I would describe it as hardcore normie, in the same way RTD (ironically) has an insanely in-depth appreciation for casual and mainstream fair. Nash is the kind of person who not only prefers dad rock but has really intense and specific feelings about it. His video on Voyage of the Damned in particular is very illustrative of this.

He didn't do muh Rose for 13 full years tho

I like it for a lot of the usual reasons (lorefag, plus it's generally quite good) but a particular reason I like it is that one of my favorite storytelling tricks is when a changing mode of storytelling is flagged by an inappropriate type of violence intruding into a story. And when I say "inappropriate", I mean a style of violence not normally suited to the genre or tone the story is so far employing. Outside of Genesis the example that immediately comes to mind is when Rogue One, a war movie where the goriest fate to befall someone onscreen was being shot, suddenly turned into a slasher movie starring a psychotic undead cyborg tearing people apart with his hell-blade. Sure, it serves a number of aesthetic purposes regarding the character of Darth Vader (most importantly among the aesthetic purposes, reflecting changing rules of film making since the 1970s) but in terms of storytelling, it shifts the register away from gritty war film storytelling where we can expect at least one named character to die for every beach taken and into the world of high fantasy storytelling where a last name like "Skywalker" or "Solo" is as good as a force field. In other words, Vader's anime holocaust metaphorically kills the idea of "a serious war fought by serious people" and drags us back into the realm of laser swords and wizard duels.

In the case of Genesis, we'd had years of the Doctor casually blowing up aliens, robots, and bunkers with his sonic and nary a care in the world. But to flag the significance of the story as being far more intimate and particular, we get the scene early on where the Doctor steps on a land mine. It's something Pertwee never had to worry about, the last time the Doctor was menaced by something as simple and elemental (and, given the wars they figured in, iconic) as a landmine was the War Games, an episode which Genesis reflects and reverberates from. The idea that the entire Time War is a fractal reflection of Genesis (hence the Day of the Doctor being the sci-fi equivalent of sticks and rocks) is itself just a smaller facet of the fact that Genesis is a reflection of the War Games.

Diamanda Hagan also had some of the same bullshit opinions on Who that Nash has. I watched one of her reviews that was all about Classic Who, and she kept interrupting herself to talk about how shit NuWho was.

That was going to be my next guess.

Are there any youtube critics who actually understand Doctor Who? All these guys like Nash, Hagan, and Hbomb give all these retarded reasons and empty criticisms for why episodes and eras suck. It says something when Sesska sounds like she has a better understanding of the show than these guys.

Well Rose was with him for the first two series, no grieving there. He was mopey for one series with Martha. And then it didn't really come up again till The Stolen Earth. So i'd contend that it's one series.

Conservative but I like the left's criticisms of capitalism, just not the other guff

Started watching the Nash video about Voyage of the Damned… He hasn't actually given me a reason not to like the titanic spaceship. He just sort of expects me to think it's cringey, but I actually really love the silliness of it. As a result of him assuming his audience already doesn't like it, he actually hasn't bothered to explain what's so bad about a space-cruise being titanic themed.

It's sort of like when you see someone criticise moffat but they assume you're already on board and will hate on it too. So they never go into what the problem is.

>Conservative but I like the left's criticisms of capitalism, just not the other guff

Not really, I didn't look forward to last weeks episode either. Chinballs previous efforts at writing DW didn't fill me with much hope and seeing that he's still shite has killed most of my enthusiasm.

You're a fantasist

What I mean is the left is better at criticising corporate greed, pointless wars, prisons and some of the tricks of the elites but then they go and ruin it by believing in and furthering fabricated media narratives. At times they seem more on the ball than liberals, but other times they just repeat the same obvious lies like they didn't even bother to process the information.

My man. Nobody else seems to like it all that much. I think it's some of Capaldi's best. Really great story.

I'm ready to give it another go. TWWFTE can be somewhat excused given all the elements it was trying to introduce and it's necessarily mundane environs. This is Chibnall's first "real" episode as showrunner.

Series 8 was fun! It was quite simple IMO and didn't really promise anything it didn't deliver.

What are you talking about? RTD loves the shit out of Big Finish more than Moffat does.

To be fair, RTD actively helped with BF Torchwood. He clearly isn't against BF as a concept.

That's what he wants you to think.

Rani = Yasmin

Clyde = Ryan

Luke = Graham

k9 = 13

Sarah Jane Smith = Grace :(

Yeah, and Moff was deeply spiteful of RTD's success and wrote Into the Dalek as a meta story about how much the RTD era secretly sucked, even calling the Dalek Rusty as symbolism.

Yes, because that is what he thinks.

>tfw you're at a safari park with thesenpaiand there's no capys or saigas to take pictures of for /who/

Did you ever read that thing about one of the writers saying they kept being scared to change too much of Torchwood, and RTD was really encouraging them to change things more?

>content warnings

oh no

It wouldn't feel right. Goodbye Sarah Jane Smith was the perfect send-off anyway. A story about her feeling too old and sick to keep going but triumphing in the end. It really is bittersweet and the perfect send-off.

He'd end up making Clyde gay with Colchester or something.

>delicious twink replaced by old man

But Colchester's already in a happy relationship.

>bradderz walsh

>not delicious

Are you gay or something?

Based and chanpilled

RTD is literally the reason BF still even exists, he talks about in the Writer's Tale, the BBC nearly squashed it and he had to sneakily intervene/mislead about them to let them retain the license.

I know, I just thought the image was funnier than Clyde and Tyler

RTD loves Big Finish so much one of his regrets with NuWho is that he never asked Briggs to write an episode during his era.

Watching Countryfile and they're hanging a disabled guy.

Why would anyone regret making a good decision?

NightmareofEden here just saying I’ve changed my name to actually be NightmareofEden in the stream. Never genuinely planned on keeping the old name, it was just a meme from the start.

Why the shop dude asks Tim Shaw: "Where is my sister"?

Ask me again

Where is my sister?

Because he's Indian Fox Mulder

You will never know

Because he wanted to know where is his sister, who was kidnapped by Tim Shaw earlier.

Care to elaborate?

>tfw ywn know where your sister is

Tim Shaw had just arrived

they mention multiple times that he was there 6 months previously

It's implied that his sister is kidnapped by Stenza.

the plot tickens?

>promise no old monsters

>new monsters are just edgy Ice Warriors

I guess it would've been weird to use Ice Warriors as the main season villains after last season showed them making peace with humanity.

40 minutes to go. I was planning on doing something productive today but I’ve just been here the whole time. Oh well.
