>The direction of each scene feels very different from what we’re used to in Doctor Who. Mark Tonderai brings the audience into the story effortlessly with each carefully thought out shot, blending the camera so closely with the characters, it’s as if they’re talking to you or vice versa. >BBC drama controller Piers Wenger, who had a brief run as a Doctor Who producer around Series 5 (which there are some rather unsavoury rumours about regarding his attitude, I’ll leave it at that), recently described the new Doctor with this official comment: “Gone is the daffiness and idiosyncrasy of her predecessors in favour of a Doctor with energy, spark and relatability.” I want to skim over the fact he obviously loathes Doctor Who for a moment and focus on that last word – relatability. Chibnall has concurred that he “love[s] Doctor Who as a big, popular, mainstream, accessible show […] So I wanted to make sure that every member of the audience felt they had a relatable character, an access point. Hopefully it means that the show can resonate with the broadest possible audience […]”

>This is all part of a strategy to rebuild the viewerbase; a strategy that means making the show accessible and relatable, so it can be back at the so-called ‘heart of the national conversation’ like Broadchurch and, er, Bodyguard. (Don’t get me started.) Hence the grasping at RTD’s straws we see in the first episode, the “family” of companions, the strident mundanity of it all, the Doctor’s overtly humanising touches, and of course the reveal that the episode is really all about something as sorrowfully common as losing a loved one. Doctor Who has lots of heart, soul, and humanity now. I may seem as though I dislike that, but I don’t. There are many interpretations of Doctor Who, and this is just another one.

>And yet there’s something else going on here.

>Because what else do we know about what Chibnall is trying to do with Series 11? He’s called it “Doctor Who in an era of Netflix”. He’s said “you’ve got to keep up with all the DC shows in the US”. What exactly does that mean? You can see evidence that these things are manifesting in the new episode; almost everything about the way it uses images and sound are perfectly in line with the average American sci-fi/fantasy TV drama, and in some places their cornier costumed-hero counterparts. It’s all blue-orange contrasts, luscious scenery shots, throbbing ambient electronic music (with the occasional theme kicking in that sounds like an advert for a bank), baddies in tactical armour, a dour tone. I see Americans talking about how it doesn’t have “that over-the-top BBC style” any more. So, all in all, it would seem to be a job well done. But how does any of this relate to making the show more relatable and accessible? Isn’t it just making the show like everything else on televi– Ah.

>The jig is, somewhat, up. There’s a unifying link between everything – the promise of a “pillar of hope for these times”; the promises that it’s a perfect jumping-on point and you don’t even have to watch it in order; the promise that the Doctor is more relatable; the assertions that the show needs to look and feel like anything else that happens to be popular, from Game of Thrones to Black Mirror – it’s a corporation’s idea of how to increase the viewership and appeal to as many people as possible. The “broadest possible audience,” as Chibby puts it. Less vision, more calculation.

>What is “relatability” – or, if you like, “humanity”… – pushed for its own sake, if not a fear of alienation and thus loss of money? This is an industry, arguably an entire global economic system, that feeds us regurgitations of ourselves because it knows we lap them up. Even the insistence upon “humanity” has a hidden caveat; it has to mean punishingly plain people like Yaz, because oddballs like Clara Oswald are the wrong kind of human and risk putting some people off. There’s zero conflict between the desire for relatability and the desire for aesthetic homogeneity; all of it is just the safe route. RTD certainly wasn’t playing it safe when he boldly cross-cut Dalek battles on a spaceship countless years in the future with Rose storming out of a chip shop and Jackie borrowing a heavy-duty vehicle (I doubt Chibnall will be serving up anything quite so confrontational). But that proved popular. And emulating things you know to be popular is both safe and boring.

>So, between Childs and Chibnall, which of them is getting it wrong? The answer, of course, is both, and Chibnall’s just as complicit in the suffocating of his own (already kind of dull) material in a drab miasma. In a featurette (the same one in which Chibnall, hilariously, credits Childs with a “great range of tone”), Childs describes how he told Chibnall and co. what he wanted to do with the show and “they were thinking exactly the same thing”. To Chibnall, it no longer even matters what his own script is doing as long as it can be bashed into a certain stylistic mould – we’ve gone well beyond style-over-substance and are now closer to style-versus-substance.

Perhaps, but I don't think Logopolis/Survival/EOT would be good/fitting endings, if you know what I mean, they work functionally as ending points but they do no actual meaningful work of ending the show like War Games and Hell Bent do. The War Games rips apart the entire show, Hell Bent puts the show back together (in two forms), those are fitting moments to end on, but stuff like EOT just makes a grand show of 10's era ending, nothing about the actual structure of the show itself or anything like that.

Sheffield shots remind me of Cardiff esablishing shots in Torchwood, especially in s1e1 and early S1 in general. Although Torchwood still achieved sense of location better IMO.

Torchwood used those aerial shots of Cardiff a lot (and had Jack on the roof as a repeating thing) in different ways which really focused the sense of location yeah. Once we get to Miracle Day it will be interesting to talk about how the sense of place shifted.

I never actually noticed that Astronaut/Moon was that high. I think it's a great story but it always surprises me a little how much praise it gets (e.g. from Neo) and especially from Sandifer whose standards are pretty specific. Like what's so alchemical about that story in particular? It sits oddly alongside The Rescue, The Mind Robber, Fenric, Ribos, etc. imo.

Who Doctor Hue here?

 No.116884

https://twitter.com/Nash076/status/1049092750308720640

So, new Doctor Who: I *really* liked it. And not just the new Doctor (she's great, no question), but the new visual language of the show as well. The way it's shot and composed is very fresh. It feels like a whole new series again.

It didn't feel like television. Well, it … did and it didn't. The look was … ugh. I don't have the words. More immediate? More intimate? Higher contrast, definitely. Angle choices were also really striking as well. It didn't look like Doctor Who, and that's good.

Whitaker's going to do a fine job. The Doctor seems happy to be the Doctor again. And yeah, she still has a little sadness, but not like before. She feels like she took what the 12th Doctor told her to heart. This is gonna be *fun* again.

I enjoyed the 9th Doctor coming to terms with trauma. It was new and interesting. I … was still on board with the 10th coming to terms with it. I was less on board with 11. By the time of 12, it seemed like they didn't know what else to do with the Doctor anymore.

Each of those Doctors had fun moments and adventure and excitement, but the core of the character kept coming back to, "Oh, my tortured past." And that can be good in a story, *important* in a story, but it can wear out its welcome over time.

I like it for a lot of the usual reasons (lorefag, plus it's generally quite good) but a particular reason I like it is that one of my favorite storytelling tricks is when a changing mode of storytelling is flagged by an inappropriate type of violence intruding into a story. And when I say "inappropriate", I mean a style of violence not normally suited to the genre or tone the story is so far employing. Outside of Genesis the example that immediately comes to mind is when Rogue One, a war movie where the goriest fate to befall someone onscreen was being shot, suddenly turned into a slasher movie starring a psychotic undead cyborg tearing people apart with his hell-blade. Sure, it serves a number of aesthetic purposes regarding the character of Darth Vader (most importantly among the aesthetic purposes, reflecting changing rules of film making since the 1970s) but in terms of storytelling, it shifts the register away from gritty war film storytelling where we can expect at least one named character to die for every beach taken and into the world of high fantasy storytelling where a last name like "Skywalker" or "Solo" is as good as a force field. In other words, Vader's anime holocaust metaphorically kills the idea of "a serious war fought by serious people" and drags us back into the realm of laser swords and wizard duels.

In the case of Genesis, we'd had years of the Doctor casually blowing up aliens, robots, and bunkers with his sonic and nary a care in the world. But to flag the significance of the story as being far more intimate and particular, we get the scene early on where the Doctor steps on a land mine. It's something Pertwee never had to worry about, the last time the Doctor was menaced by something as simple and elemental (and, given the wars they figured in, iconic) as a landmine was the War Games, an episode which Genesis reflects and reverberates from. The idea that the entire Time War is a fractal reflection of Genesis (hence the Day of the Doctor being the sci-fi equivalent of sticks and rocks) is itself just a smaller facet of the fact that Genesis is a reflection of the War Games.

What I mean is the left is better at criticising corporate greed, pointless wars, prisons and some of the tricks of the elites but then they go and ruin it by believing in and furthering fabricated media narratives. At times they seem more on the ball than liberals, but other times they just repeat the same obvious lies like they didn't even bother to process the information.
