So did anyone else expect Angstrom to turn out to be a big manipulator? Her speech about her family felt so overdone and obvious that I assumed it was in-universe schmaltzy heart-string tugging as opposed to just weak writing.

 No.117833

Series 5-6 main villains: A mysterious religious sect who utilizes ceremonies and tricks of the mind to trap the Doctor.

Series 7 main villain: A force of nature who has taken physical form to take vengeance against the Doctor after so long.

Series 8 main villain: An old ally/enemy of the Doctor's who wants to become his friend again, but her murderous tendencies are too hardwired in her brain to comprehend what she does only harms the innocent.

Series 9 main villain: A myth, a legacy, something that haunts the Doctor to his very core but one he cannot truly grasp. Could it be himself? Could it be his companion? A question that brings him back to Gallifrey and drives him mad.

Series 10 main villain: The dead and dying brought back through cybernetics, a symbol of everlasting stagnancy, tearing apart through floor after floor as the Doctor makes his path to a new change.

Series 11 main villain: goofy predators who put teeth on their faces

I'd prefer an analysis using her scientific knowledge, actually studying the specimen. An example would be the water. I get that she hasn't got anything on her other than the sonic, but it would of been nice to see her maybe scoop some water in a tube, study it on the boat and discover the flesh eating microbes. Actually show that she knows what she is talking about. Maybe something could happen to the boat and we get some tension rather than just shooting lasers. I know its not possible due to her not having any equipment but along those lines.

The water scene was weird. Would have been nice if we had some red shirts to drink the water and show the effects.

I think the best scene in the ep was the Epzo monologue about his mother. That subtle scene was really good, and actually revealed some of Graham's better qualities. Bradley's performance of resigned, but evident, annoyance and disgust from his response was well done, as was 13's quick rebuttal. Jodie excels in 13's quick rebuttal scenes–rather than a showy 10 moralization, 13 seems to be usually quiet and to the point. (Also, 13's "no-gun" comment to Ryan is less "pacifism" and more "don't go in gun-blazing without a proper plan, and going for weapons makes one reliant on weapons." It's subtler than 10's dislike of weapons, and 7's hate for them.)

Point out how the Stenza are basically parasites that justify taking from others based on their natural strength, and how that philosophy breeds cheaters and bullies.  No.117945

desu this episode felt like Series 7 one. Wasted concepts and bad pacing.

The episode didn't do anything with the 'race' idea.

They all ended up working together for some reason, even though Ezpo was supposed to want the top prize. It would have been more interesting if Ezpo left them down in the tunnels and went on his own on the surface instead of taking a fucking nap like a idiot. And the less said about the ending the better, that was journey to the center of the tardis tier. The writing was really bad.

I hope Jodie gets better writing soon.

 No.117946

Well frankly I was totally disappointed by this episode. The plot was a hackneyed gameshow idea with idiotic so called ‘celebrity’ guest stars competing for a cash prize. Bradley Walsh was basically carrying the whole thing, I just didn’t even recognise the Doctor! Plus if that’s supposed to be the new Tardis interior it looks terrible. The ‘monster’ certainly wasn’t scary at all and I hated the new theme tune.

Also why was it on ITV and why did Bradley Walsh keep going on about the chase being on?

Series 11 has blackpilled me about Doctor Who and now I crave its death. I strongly suspect Moffat was the same for the entire Capaldi era, knowing there was no way the show would end up in the hands of someone worthy after he left.

>DOCTOR: You are a broom. Question. You take a broom, you replace the handle, and then later you replace the brush, and you do that over and over again. Is it still the same broom? Answer? No, of course it isn't. But you can still sweep the floor. Which is not strictly relevant, skip that last part. You have replaced every piece of yourself, mechanical and organic, time and time again. There's not a trace of the original you left. You probably can't even remember where you got that face from.

>HALF-FACE MAN: It cannot end.

>DOCTOR: It has to. You know it does. And there's only one way out.

>HALF-FACE MAN: You are stronger than you look.

>DOCTOR: And I'm hoping you are too. This is over. Are you capable of admitting that?

The 3x90’ mini-series is written and created by Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss and inspired by Bram Stoker’s classic novel. Three feature length episodes will re-introduce the world to Dracula, the vampire who made evil sexy. In Transylvania in 1897, the blood-drinking Count is drawing his plans against Victorian London. And be warned: the dead travel fast.

Co-creators, writers and executive producers Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss said, “There have always been stories about great evil. What’s special about Dracula, is that Bram Stoker gave evil its own hero.”

Charlotte Moore, BBC Director of Content, says:“Genius duo Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss turn their attentions to Dracula for unmissable event television on BBC One."

Piers Wenger, Controller of BBC Drama, says: “Steven and Mark’s ingenious vision for Dracula is as clever as it is chilling. In their talented hands the fans will experience the power of Bram Stoker’s creation as if completely anew. We are thrilled to be collaborating with them and the brilliant team at Hartswood on yet another iconic British series.”

Larry Tanz, Vice President, Content Acquisition, Netflix, says: “We can’t wait to bring Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss’ brilliant storytelling to our members around the world and we are eager to collaborate on yet another series with the BBC.”

Sue Vertue, Executive Producer, Hartswood Films, says: "We are absolutely thrilled to be back at the BBC, and also delighted that Netflix are coming on board with Dracula. There’s nothing like fresh blood.”

Dracula was commissioned by Charlotte Moore, Director of BBC Content and Piers Wenger, Controller of BBC Drama. It is written and created by Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss; executive producers are Mark Gatiss, Steven Moffat and Sue Vertue for Hartswood Films, Ben Irving for BBC and will be handled by Larry Tanz for Netflix.

The series will premiere on BBC One in the UK and on Netflix outside of the UK, and China where the service is not available. BBC Studios Distribution, who brokered the deal with Netflix for Hartswood Films, is the international distributor.

This might be jumping the gun, but I feel like Mofftiss's Dracula is going to at least superficially resemble Francis Ford Coppola's movie adaptation from the 90s (the one with Keanu Reeves doing another legendarily awful performance).

That film did a lot to reposition Dracula, Mina, and I think Van Helsing too in a way that reminds me of Moffat and Gatiss' interests. There's more emphasis on Vlad as a tragic, somewhat dark and sexy figure who just misses his waifu, and ultimately has to be "released" by Mina who gets the final heroic moment (a Moff-like recentering on the heroine). But there's also multiple brilliantly designed and creepy monster forms for Dracula that he switches between, which seems right up Mofftiss's street. Van Helsing (as played by Antony Hopkins) is more of a slightly insane badass that you can see slotting into Doctor Who/Torchwood.

It's sort of a shit film but an endearingly mental one, and visually gorgeous. I recommend it.

Phasing in and out of materialisation, the TARDIS' only (relatively) dimensionally stable matter was her exterior. In the time it took for the Doctor to find her again, she was given adequate time to to reshape the police box into something cleaner and more suitable once it had been almost completely destroyed at the end of TUaT.

The interior, however, couldn't stabilise itself for long enough for a full redesign. Instead, the TARDIS did all she could do in an attempt to heal herself - reboot, so to speak. The current interior is mostly the TARDIS' "natural" state as an organism, hence the roundels being spread apart and untouching like cells, and the mechanical walls closer to the doors are its display of machinery. It hasn't even fully integrated its dimensions into the full body of the police box. She didn't have the chance to fully form and redecorate, but she did the best she could with what stable time she had.

Fundamentally speaking, the TARDIS exists in all of time at once. She knew that the Doctor would come home with a crystal screwdriver chose to design herself with one form familiarity for her, a further comfort for the Doctor's new self. Other than the colour scheme and crystals, the interior is entirely a "natural", undecorated Type 40.

A message can be read from this. 13, although she may not be explicitly showing it - Chibnall may not even be implying it, but it can be seen - is scared in her new body, still learning herself. Take "I haven't bought women's clothes in a long time" and "Come to Daddy - I mean Mummy" for example. The TARDIS, like the Doctor, is bearing itself to her counterpart. It's a display of their intimacy and bond as two parts of one mind. She has redesigned herself on the outside, completely fresh again, but inside she remains her "true" self. The miniature police box model is a nod to this. It's the TARDIS showing the Doctor that yes, this is intentional; I see you so it's only fair that you see me, both for what I am now and for what I have always been (and will always be) inside.

It excuses the shittiness of the design, at least.

Doctor Who (allegedly) Series 9/11 Episode 2, The Ghost Monuzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz…

Another borefest. Judy - sorry, Jodie is still delivering her lines like a Blue Peter presenter (one of the shit ones too, not Matt Baker, Konnie Huq etc. - they were based). When she's not talking, and actually when she is talking, she looks completely lost; like she's wondered on to the wrong set yet somehow has the correct lines. "Correct" as in awful and subtle-as-a-freight-train. "These are my new best friends" *wince*. Also she has a dumb way of pointing the screwdriver. Intro looks like swirling piss. Ryan's accent sometimes makes me wonder which US state Sheffield is in. This series doesn't feel like Who and I don't think it's just Jodie; I haven't put my basement-dwelling manbaby finger on it yet. The moody cinematography and soundtrack are completely at odds with the on-the-nose dialogue, central overacting and ridiculous costume. The STANZA are the season's Big Bad? Good God. This triggers some traumatic Class flashbacks (see Shadowkin). YAS does nothing but look pretty (dat's sexist!) I keep pausing it to write this review it's so fucking boring. Evil talking cloth. Might as well at this point. The Doctor was "abandoned"? Is this Chinballs following Muffhat's example and continuing to ruin the lore? Saw Chekhov's cigar coming a mile away. Call of Duty, Antiques Roadshow blah blah blah.

Not that anon, but I think the one thing she does well is conveying a genuine sense of empathy or caring. Everyone talked about the apologising in the first ep, and I think she does it well again in the second ep when Ryan is about to climb the ladder and she talks about the NVQ and tells him what to focus on and then states bluntly but without any hostility that it's time to get a move on. I think it's one of the distinguishing features she's brought to the role so far.

 No.118538

Maybe it's just because of how genericly Whittaker's been written in these first two episodes, but I can't even concieve of a character flaw they could make part of her Doctor's character. The only thing that feels like a hallmark of her so far is being being very empathic, I guess unless you ever oppose her like Epzo, in which case she'll just shit all over them.
